The pen hovered over the paper, heavy in her hand.
Elena paced her small apartment, glancing nervously at Alexander, who remained impossibly calm across the table. The stranger lounged in the doorway, eyes gleaming with something unreadable.
"This is insane," Elena muttered. "I can't just-"
"You can," Alexander interrupted smoothly. "One signature, one year, debts cleared, brother's tuition secured. Everything your family needs. But you must decide."
She sank into a chair. Her mind spun. A stranger wanted her to marry him - legally. She didn't trust him. But… her family…
The stranger leaned forward, voice low and deliberate. "Sometimes survival requires sacrifices you never imagined. Are you willing?"
Elena shook her head. "I don't even know what that means."
Alexander's eyes softened slightly. "It means security. Stability. And yes, confinement. But it's temporary."
Hours passed, though it felt like minutes. Elena reviewed the contract line by line. Clauses about public conduct, confidentiality, obligations. The weight of responsibility pressed on her chest.
Finally, she exhaled. Her decision was made. Hands trembling, she pressed pen to paper.
The ink scratched loudly across the page.
Alexander slid the folder back into his hands without a word. His gray eyes met hers. "Good. Now we move forward."
The stranger gave a small nod. "Interesting choice. We'll see how it plays out."
Elena's pulse thundered. She had done it. Signed. But at what cost?
