Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: Class Selection

Cassian Vale stood frozen in the quiet study room as the distant screams from the campus courtyard echoed through the rain-soaked night. The glowing panel hovering in front of him cast a faint blue light across the desks and scattered textbooks around the room.

Outside the window, chaos spread like wildfire.

Students ran across the campus lawns in every direction, some tripping over benches or colliding with one another as they tried to escape the mutated creature rampaging through the courtyard. The animal that had once been a stray dog now moved with unnatural speed, its body larger and more muscular than before, crimson eyes gleaming under the fractured sky.

Cassian forced himself to breathe slowly.

Panic was contagious. The moment he let it take over, his ability to think clearly would vanish.

The panel in front of him flickered again.

[System Integration in Progress…]

Cassian rubbed his temples and stared at the words.

"So this is real," he said quietly.

The alternative—that he had suddenly lost his mind along with half the population of Ravencrest—seemed less convincing with every passing second.

Another scream cut through the air outside as the creature lunged at another fleeing student.

Cassian turned away from the window.

Watching would not help anyone. At least not yet.

The glowing interface shifted once more.

[Integration Complete.]

[Initial Evolver privileges granted.]

[Preparing Class Selection.]

Cassian blinked.

"Class selection," he repeated.

The phrase sounded like something out of a role-playing game. A ridiculous concept only a few minutes ago. Now it appeared to be a critical decision that could determine whether he survived the night.

He dragged a nearby chair closer and sat down slowly, keeping his eyes fixed on the floating display.

The panel expanded, several lines of text appearing beneath the original message.

[Standard Evolvers receive three class options.]

[Analyzing subject compatibility…]

Cassian leaned forward slightly.

The system paused for a moment.

Then several new lines appeared.

[Exceptional Mana Affinity detected.]

[System compatibility exceeds standard parameters.]

[Bonus class options granted.]

Cassian frowned.

"Bonus?"

The panel updated again.

[Five Rare Class Options available.]

For a moment he simply stared at the words.

Outside, the chaos continued to escalate. Distant car alarms blared somewhere beyond the campus while sirens wailed across Ravencrest City.

Inside the quiet study room, Cassian's entire future seemed to be waiting on the glowing screen in front of him.

"Five options," he murmured.

Most people, according to the system, were getting three.

Why him?

He considered the question briefly before pushing it aside. Speculation would not change the situation. What mattered now was making the correct choice.

The panel shifted again.

Five lines of text appeared.

[Available Classes]

[Arcane Architect — Rare]

[Void Channeler — Rare]

[Spellblade — Rare]

[Elemental Prodigy — Rare]

[Soul Arcanist — Rare]

Cassian leaned back slowly.

"Well," he said quietly. "Those all sound dangerous."

He focused on the first option.

Immediately the system expanded the entry, displaying additional information.

[Arcane Architect — Rare]

[A specialist class focused on the manipulation and construction of advanced mana structures.]

[Strengths: Mana Control, Spell Formation, Construct Creation.]

[Starting Skills: Mana Construct, Arcane Pulse.]

[Passive Ability: Mana Blueprint.]

Cassian tapped his finger thoughtfully against the desk.

Constructing spells rather than simply casting them…

The idea intrigued him.

Engineering had trained his mind to think in systems and structures. If magic on Terra followed any kind of underlying framework, a class that allowed him to manipulate that structure directly could become extremely powerful over time.

Still, it would be foolish to decide without reviewing the other options.

He shifted his attention to the next class.

[Void Channeler — Rare]

[A class specializing in dimensional manipulation and void energy.]

[Strengths: Spatial Distortion, Mobility, Penetration Attacks.]

[Starting Skills: Void Bolt, Rift Step.]

[Passive Ability: Dimensional Sensitivity.]

Cassian raised an eyebrow.

"Teleportation at level one," he said.

That sounded incredibly useful.

If he had possessed an ability like that five minutes ago, escaping the chaos outside would have been much easier.

Still, power always came with trade-offs. Manipulating space itself likely required immense mana and precise control.

He moved to the third option.

[Spellblade — Rare]

[A hybrid combat class combining martial combat with arcane power.]

[Strengths: Balanced physical and magical growth.]

[Starting Skills: Mana Slash, Arcane Dash.]

[Passive Ability: Combat Focus.]

Cassian glanced at his reflection in the window.

He had never been particularly athletic. The Spellblade class might grant him physical combat abilities, but it would probably take significant time and training to use them effectively.

Outside the study room door, footsteps pounded down the hallway.

Someone shouted something unintelligible before the sound faded toward the stairwell.

Cassian returned his attention to the panel.

The fourth option expanded.

[Elemental Prodigy — Rare]

[A mage class possessing extreme affinity for elemental forces.]

[Strengths: High offensive spell output.]

[Starting Skills: Elemental Bolt, Flame Surge.]

[Passive Ability: Elemental Affinity.]

Fire, lightning, wind…

Pure destructive magic.

Cassian could easily imagine how powerful such abilities might become at higher levels.

Yet something about it felt… straightforward. Powerful, certainly, but not particularly flexible.

His eyes moved to the final option.

[Soul Arcanist — Rare]

[A class specializing in the manipulation of soul energy.]

[Strengths: Life absorption, spiritual binding.]

[Starting Skills: Soul Drain, Spirit Chain.]

[Passive Ability: Soul Resonance.]

Cassian felt a faint chill run through him as he read the description.

Manipulating souls did not sound like the sort of power one used lightly.

Still, the potential for growth seemed immense.

He leaned back in his chair again, considering all five options carefully.

Outside, the mutated dog—or whatever it had become—continued rampaging across the campus courtyard.

The screams had grown fewer.

That fact alone made the silence more disturbing.

Cassian clasped his hands together and focused on the list once more.

Void Channeler offered incredible mobility.

Elemental Prodigy promised devastating offensive power.

Spellblade created a balanced fighter.

Soul Arcanist hinted at terrifying long-term potential.

But the first class still held his attention.

Arcane Architect.

A class that treated magic like a structure rather than a weapon.

His mind began racing with possibilities.

If mana could be shaped the same way engineers shaped materials and systems…

Then spells might be built, improved, and redesigned.

Most people would probably treat magic like a tool they had been given.

But Cassian had never been content with simply using tools.

He preferred understanding how they worked.

A sudden crash echoed from somewhere downstairs, followed by panicked shouting.

Cassian exhaled slowly.

The world outside was falling apart.

He did not have time to debate endlessly.

His decision crystallized.

Cassian looked directly at the first option.

"Arcane Architect," he said.

The panel responded immediately.

[Confirm selection: Arcane Architect — Rare.]

Cassian nodded once.

"Yes."

The interface flashed.

[Class Confirmed.]

A surge of energy flooded through his body again, but this time the sensation was controlled rather than overwhelming. The power flowed through his veins like liquid light, settling deep within his chest.

Cassian gasped softly as new information flooded his mind.

Instinctive understanding.

Mana.

For the first time he could feel it.

The energy lingering in the air, drifting through the walls, pulsing faintly within every living thing nearby.

It was everywhere.

The system panel updated.

[Congratulations.]

[Class: Arcane Architect acquired.]

[Active Skill obtained: Mana Construct.]

[Active Skill obtained: Arcane Pulse.]

[Passive Skill obtained: Mana Blueprint.]

Cassian flexed his fingers slowly.

The strange new sense of mana responded immediately.

Invisible energy gathered around his hand, faint but unmistakable.

A slow smile spread across his face.

"Interesting," he murmured.

Outside the window, the mutated creature howled again as it stalked across the campus lawn.

Cassian rose from his chair and walked toward the glass.

The city of Ravencrest burned with chaos beneath the shattered sky.

But for the first time since the world had begun to fall apart…

Cassian Vale felt ready to face it.
