Chapter 20 - Chapter 19 - The Blood Domain

Age 23 — The Road to Gu Clan Territory

They walked for seven days.

Gu Tianming led. Gu Chen followed. They spoke little. The landscape changed slowly — from the familiar mountains of the Crimson Cloud Sect to rolling plains, then to hills, then to something else entirely.

The sky began to change on the fifth day.

It was subtle at first. A reddish tint at the edges. A heaviness in the air. By the seventh day, the sky was the color of old blood.

The Soldier: We're close.

The King: The Blood Domain.

The Beggar: Home sweet home.

Gu Chen touched the pendant at his chest.

---

Day eight

They reached a gate.

Not like the gates of sects or cities. This was older. Stranger. Two massive pillars of black stone, carved with symbols that seemed to move when viewed from the corner of the eye. Between them, a shimmering curtain of red light.

Gu Tianming stopped.

"The Blood Domain. Territory of the Gu Clan." He glanced at Gu Chen. "Once you enter, there's no leaving without permission. Understand?"

Gu Chen looked at the gate.

The Orphan: We could still run.

The Soldier: We came this far.

The King: We see it through.

The Monk: We choose.

Gu Chen nodded.

Gu Tianming stepped through the curtain.

Gu Chen followed.

---

The world changed.

The air was thick — thick with something that was not quite spiritual energy, not quite blood. It pressed against his skin, his lungs, his cracked core.

His core pulsed.

Not in warning. In recognition.

The Soldier: It knows this place.

The King: Or remembers it.

Gu Chen kept walking.

---

The Gu Clan compound

It was not a city. It was not a sect. It was something older — a sprawling complex of black stone buildings, connected by covered walkways, surrounded by walls that seemed to absorb light.

Cultivators moved through the compound. They wore dark robes. They did not smile. They glanced at Gu Chen as he passed, their eyes lingering, assessing.

The Beggar: They're measuring you.

The Soldier: Let them.

Gu Chen kept his face still.

Gu Tianming led him through the compound, past training grounds where disciples fought with brutal efficiency, past gardens where nothing grew, past halls carved with the same shifting symbols.

They stopped before a massive door.

Black iron. Carved with a single character: 顾.

Gu.

"My brother is inside." Gu Tianming's voice was flat. "He will decide what to do with you."

He pushed open the door.

---

The throne room

It was dark.

Not the darkness of night — the darkness of something that had never known light. Torches burned along the walls, but their flames seemed to shrink away from the center of the room.

At the far end, on a raised platform, a man sat on a throne of black stone.

He was old. Not ancient — just old. His face was lined, his hair streaked with gray, his eyes the color of dried blood. He wore robes as dark as the stone around him.

Gu Tianxiong.

Gu Chen's father.

The Orphan: Father.

The Beggar: The man who left.

The Soldier: The enemy.

The King: The target.

Gu Chen stood still.

Gu Tianxiong looked at him.

For a long moment, neither spoke.

Then Gu Tianxiong smiled. It was not a warm smile. It was the smile of someone examining property.

"So. You're the one."

Gu Chen said nothing.

"Come closer. Let me see you."

Gu Chen did not move.

The Soldier: Defiance.

The King: Stupid.

The Beggar: Smart.

Gu Tianxiong's smile did not waver. "Stubborn. Good. Stubborn weapons are harder to break." He stood, walked down from the throne, circled Gu Chen slowly.

"Nascent Soul. Impressive for someone with no resources, no training, no family." He paused. "But then, you're not really 'no family,' are you?"

Gu Chen met his gaze.

"You abandoned me."

Gu Tianxiong laughed. It was a cold sound.

"Abandoned? No, boy. I produced you. There's a difference." He circled back to his throne, sat down. "Your mother was a servant. Pretty, for a mortal. I spent a few nights with her. She got pregnant. I told her to deal with it."

The Orphan: He doesn't even remember her.

The Beggar: He never did.

Gu Chen's hands curled into fists.

Gu Tianxiong noticed. His smile widened.

"Angry. Good. Anger is fuel." He leaned forward. "Here's how this works, boy. You're my blood. That means you're my property. You'll train with the clan. You'll fight for the clan. You'll die for the clan, if that's what I decide."

"And if I refuse?"

Gu Tianxiong's eyes narrowed. "Then you're useless. And useless things get discarded."

The Soldier: Fight now.

The King: Not yet. Too many.

The Beggar: He's right. We'd die.

The Monk: Choose.

Gu Chen was silent for a long moment.

Then: "I'll stay. For now."

Gu Tianxiong nodded slowly. "Smart boy." He waved a hand. "Gu Tianming will show you to your quarters. Training starts tomorrow."

Gu Chen turned to leave.

"Oh, and boy?"

He stopped.

"Don't think of running. The Blood Domain doesn't let go of what's hers."

Gu Chen walked out.

---

The quarters

They were better than anything he had had before.

A room to himself. A bed with actual sheets. A desk, a lamp, a window that looked out over the compound.

Gu Chen sat on the bed and stared at the wall.

The Orphan: He's our father.

The Beggar: He's a monster.

The Soldier: He's powerful. We can use that.

The King: He's useful. For now.

The Monk: He's broken. Like you.

Gu Chen touched the pendant.

His mother's face. He still could not see it.

---

That night

A knock.

Gu Chen opened the door.

A woman stood there. Young, maybe twenty-five. Dark robes. Eyes that held something ancient.

"You're the new one. The bastard."

Gu Chen said nothing.

She smiled. It was not a cruel smile. Curious, maybe.

"I'm Gu Mei. Your cousin." She tilted her head. "I wanted to see you for myself."

"Why?"

"Because everyone's talking about you. The Nascent Soul bastard who walked in alone." She stepped closer. "Because I know what it's like to be unwanted here."

The Orphan: Another one.

The Beggar: Another trap.

The Soldier: Another ally?

Gu Chen studied her.

"What do you want?"

Gu Mei shrugged. "Nothing. Yet." She turned to leave. "But if you need information — about the clan, about my uncle, about anything — find me."

She walked away.

Gu Chen watched her go.

The King: Information.

The Soldier: Potential ally.

The Beggar: Potential trap.

The Monk: Potential.

---

Outside the compound walls

Too far for any mortal eye to see, a woman in white stood at the edge of the Blood Domain.

She did not press her hand against a tree. There were no trees here. Only black stone and red sky.

But she stood still, watching.

"Five down," Su Wan whispered.

"Four to go."

She looked toward the compound.

"He's inside now. With him."

Her voice trembled. Just slightly.

"Ten thousand years. And I still can't do anything."

She did not move for a long time.
