Chapter 7 - Chapter 6: The Web of Weakness

The armored transport hummed as it sped down the cracked highway, leaving the smoldering chaos of the town behind. Kael sat in the driver's seat, his knuckles white as he gripped the steering wheel.

He didn't look back. He never would again.

Inside his chest, the phantom pain of the slave mark had vanished, replaced by a cold, hollow hunger. He was free. Truly free. But the taste of freedom was bitter on his tongue. It tasted like ash and old blood.

Silas.

The name echoed in his mind like a curse. The woman who had branded him. The woman who had held his leash while Morgan Whitmore held the other end. For five years, she had watched. She had monitored his vitals while he screamed.

He pulled the vehicle off the main road, steering it into the dense treeline of an overgrown rest stop. He killed the engine. Silence rushed in, broken only by the ticking of the cooling motor and the distant chirping of birds.

Birds. Life. It was sickening how normal the world sounded.

Kael pulled the AFO tablet from the passenger seat. The screen was cracked, but functional. He needed information. He needed a target.

His fingers moved across the screen, navigating the AFO's internal database. He had absorbed the knowledge of the agents he killed, fragments of their training and access codes floating in his mind like half-remembered dreams.

SEARCH: WHITMORE BIOTECH PERSONNEL

The loading icon spun for a agonizing three seconds.

ACCESS GRANTED.

He scrolled through the list. Guards. Scientists. Janitors. He stopped when he saw the file.

NAME: SILAS (MONONYM)RANK: B (EARLY STAGE)LEVEL: 185CLASS: WARLOCK (CURSE SPECIALIST)STATUS: ACTIVE - HEAD OF RUNE DIVISION

Kael froze.

Level 185. B-Rank.

The system flickered in his vision, reading his hesitation.

SYSTEM ANALYSISHOST LEVEL: 14TARGET LEVEL: 185DISPARITY: CRITICALCOMBAT VICTORY PROBABILITY: 0.0001%

"Fuck," Kael whispered, the word dropping like a stone in the quiet car.

He had thought he was strong. He had torn through the AFO agents like paper. He had lightning in his veins and fire in his hands. But against a B-Rank? Against a Warlock who specialized in curses?

He would be swatted like a fly. If Silas had been at that restaurant, he wouldn't have just lost—he would have been erased.

He stared at the pixelated photo attached to the file. Silas looked back at him with cold, calculating eyes. She wasn't just a scientist; she was a powerhouse. The Whitmores didn't hire weaklings for their most sensitive operations.

"I can't fight her," Kael muttered, a grim realization settling over him. "Not yet."

So what was the alternative?

Kael tapped the screen again, accessing Silas's public profile. The System Apocalypse had changed the world, but bureaucracy remained. Even monsters had to file taxes and register residences.

REGISTERED ADDRESS: SECTOR 4, WHITMORE RESIDENTIAL ZONE. FAMILY REGISTRY:SPOUSE: ARTHUR VANCE (LEVEL 40 - CIVILIAN). CHILD: LYRA VANCE (LEVEL 28 - STUDENT).

Kael paused. His eyes narrowed.

Family.

For five years, he had been an experiment. He had been property. He had been starved, beaten, and tortured. Silas had gone home every night. She had eaten dinner with a husband. She had tucked a daughter into bed.

She had a life. A soft, warm, human life—built on the foundation of his suffering.

A dark, twisted thought began to uncoil in the back of Kael's mind. It wasn't enough to kill her. Death was too quick. Death was a release. He wanted her to feel what he felt. He wanted her to understand what it meant to have everything stripped away.

He tapped on the daughter's file.

NAME: LYRA LOCKWOOD AGE: 17RANK: E (PEAK)AFFILIATION: SILVERWOOD ACADEMYTALENT: SPIRIT AFFINITY (GRADE: A)

A photo loaded. A girl with soft brown hair and wide, innocent eyes smiled at the camera. She looked... kind. She looked completely unaware of what her mother did in the dark rooms of the Whitmore facility.

Kael stared at the image. He felt no attraction, only a cold, clinical calculation.

Silverwood Academy.

It was a prestigious school for awakened youth, one of the institutions built by the new world government to train the next generation of hunters. It was a fortress, but it was also a social hub.

And the daughter... Lyra... she was the weak link.

Silas was a B-Rank Warlock. She had barriers, curses, and decades of combat experience. But she was also a mother. And mothers, Kael knew, were vulnerable where their children were concerned.

The system pinged, as if sensing his intent.

NEW QUEST GENERATED: THE BACKDOOROBJECTIVE: INFILTRATE THE LIFE OF THE TARGET'S WEAKNESS.TARGET: LYRA LOCKWOOD.REWARD: INTELLIGENCE ON SILAS, 100 XP.WARNING: THIS PATH REQUIRES DECEPTION AND MANIPULATION.

Kael's lips curled into a faint, humorless smile.

"Deception," he murmured. "I learned from the best."

He closed the tablet and leaned back in the seat. He couldn't storm the Whitmore estate. He couldn't challenge Silas directly. But he could slip through the cracks. He could become a ghost in their perfect little life.

He looked at his reflection in the rearview mirror. He was filthy, covered in blood and ash. His eyes were dead, haunted. No one would look at him and see a student. They would see a monster.

That had to change.

He needed to clean up. He needed clothes. He needed to learn how to smile again, even if it was a lie.

He started the engine again. He had a destination now. Not the Whitmore facility, but a shopping district on the outskirts of the city. Then, he would head to Silverwood.

He would find Lyra Vance. He would befriend her. He would make her trust him.

And then, he would drag her mother down into the dark with him.

The armored transport rolled out of the trees, heading toward the gleaming skyline of the city in the distance. Kael didn't look back at the trail of blood he left behind. He only looked forward, his eyes fixed on the horizon where the sun was setting, painting the sky in shades of crimson and black.

The hunt had evolved. It wasn't about strength anymore.

It was about breaking hearts before breaking bones.
