Chapter 20 - The Rival Appears

The morning sun filtered through Riverview Academy's wide glass windows, making the hallway look brighter than usual. Yet for Chelsea, the brightness did nothing to ease the storm brewing in her chest. She had survived Adrian's teasing, her own frustrations, and even Vanessa's subtle glances in the past weeks but something about today felt different.

And then she saw her.

Vanessa.

Golden hair perfectly in place, designer bag slung casually over one shoulder, heels clicking on the polished floor. Her smile was bright, confident, and, somehow, terrifyingly deliberate. She glanced around the hallway and immediately locked eyes on Adrian. A predator in designer clothes.

Chelsea's chest tightened. So this is her? The "rich, perfect, popular girl" everyone whispers about.

Adrian, of course, didn't miss her entrance. Leaning against the lockers, he straightened, eyes gleaming, dark skin glowing under the sunlight. A faint smirk played across his lips and then, almost automatically, he straightened his posture, looking at Vanessa like she was an interesting challenge.

Ugh, I hate him. Chelsea muttered under her breath, gripping her books.

By first period, Vanessa had made her move. She slid into the desk next to Adrian, laughing softly. "Hey," she purred, voice smooth and practiced. "I don't think we've properly met."

Adrian tilted his head slightly, dark eyes glinting. "We have… just not in a way that matters."

Chelsea's head snapped around, jaw tightening. Excuse me?

Vanessa's smirk widened. "Oh, I think it matters," she whispered, glancing at me with a glance that dripped superiority.

Chelsea's blood boiled. Vanessa wasn't just rich, she was confident, manipulative, and terrifyingly bold. And Adrian… Adrian's attention didn't leave her, and that smirk that cocky, smug smirk made her fists clench.

Lunchtime was worse.

Vanessa had somehow gathered a small entourage three girls and two guys who followed her like obedient shadows. Every step Chelsea took, they made little remarks, whispered under their breath. Vanessa tilted her head in my direction and whispered, "Enjoying your walk with him?"

I gritted my teeth. "Mind your own business," I snapped.

Before she could respond, Adrian stepped in. Leaning casually against the table, dark eyes flashing, he said softly, "She doesn't want to play your game."

Vanessa's smile faltered. Not because of Chelsea because Adrian's attention wasn't hers. She wasn't used to being ignored. And Chelsea noticed, heart pounding with a mix of relief and disbelief. Adrian… defended her again.

By mid-afternoon, the tension had escalated into a slow-burning, visible war.

Chelsea was walking to the library when Vanessa's gang appeared in the hallway, blocking her path.

"Where do you think you're going?" one of the girls sneered.

"Back to my studies," Chelsea said, voice calm but firm. "Nothing to see here."

Vanessa stepped forward, heels clicking, eyes narrowed. "You think you can just walk past me and steal his attention? Not happening."

Before Chelsea could respond, Adrian appeared, leaning against the wall with that smirk that always drove her insane. "Back off," he said quietly. But there was steel in his tone.

Vanessa's eyes widened. "Excuse me?"

"You heard me," Adrian said. "Step away. Now."

Chelsea's heart hammered. She had never seen him like this protective, serious, commanding. Vanessa muttered something under her breath, and the group slowly dispersed, throwing glares over their shoulders.

By the end of the day, the school announced a student council picnic and party the perfect opportunity for more drama. Chelsea could already feel Vanessa plotting: she would use her popularity, her gang, and her charm to claim Adrian's attention in front of everyone.

Chelsea clenched her fists, heart pounding. She had no gang, no social army. But she had her intelligence, her integrity, and Adrian's subtle interest. That was enough. She hoped.

And Adrian? He smirked at her from across the hall, dark eyes glinting. "Looks like it's going to be… fun," he whispered.

Chelsea groaned inwardly. Of course it will. Because he's impossible.
