Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

BLACK VELVET SIN

PROLOGUE

The Man Who Does Not Feel

In the heart of Johannesburg's most powerful underground empire stood one name people did not say loudly.

Adrian Moretti

They called him The Velvet King.

Not because he was gentle.

But because he destroyed people quietly.

Adrian did not shout.

He did not threaten.

He did not lose control.

He simply decided.

And when he decided, people disappeared.

At twenty-nine, he controlled the largest private security and logistics empire in Southern Africa — a company that looked legitimate from the outside.

Moretti Holdings.

Clean buildings.

Perfect records.

Immaculate reputation.

Underneath?

Weapons.

Private contracts.

Shadow negotiations.

Information trade.

Adrian was calm. Elegant. Always in tailored black suits. Silver watch. Perfect posture.

He spoke softly.

But men twice his size trembled when he did.

He did not smile in meetings.

He did not laugh at jokes.

He did not react to insults.

Emotion was weakness.

Weakness was exploited.

And Adrian Moretti had never allowed himself to be exploited.

Until her.

CHAPTER ONE

The Only Thing He Doesn't Control

Her name was Luna Dlamini.

Personal assistant to the CEO.

Three years in the company.

Perfect attendance record.

Impeccable work ethic.

Calm under pressure.

She wore soft pastel blouses and carried a black leather notebook everywhere. Her hair was always neatly tied back, but a few strands always escaped.

She smiled easily.

Not flirtatious.

Not dramatic.

Just warm.

And somehow… she was not afraid of him.

That was the problem.

"Your 10 a.m. meeting was moved to eleven," Luna said one morning, stepping into his office without hesitation.

Adrian didn't look up from the contract in his hand.

"Who approved that?"

"You did," she replied smoothly. "Yesterday. You were multitasking."

He paused.

Slowly lifted his eyes to her.

Most people looked away under that stare.

Luna did not.

She simply tilted her head slightly.

"You also skipped breakfast," she added. "Again."

"That is not your concern."

"It becomes my concern when you almost faint in a boardroom."

His jaw tightened.

She placed a small container on his desk.

Fruit.

Neatly cut.

"You can fire me later," she said lightly. "Eat first."

Then she turned and walked out before he could respond.

Adrian stared at the container.

No one spoke to him like that.

No one walked away first.

No one acted as if his anger didn't matter.

His fingers tightened slightly on the desk.

He did not like unpredictability.

And Luna Dlamini was becoming the only variable in his controlled world.

The Obsession Begins Quietly

At first, it was small things.

He noticed when she tied her hair differently.

When she hummed softly while organizing files.

When she laughed at her own jokes under her breath.

He told himself it was observation.

A leader must know everything happening around him.

That was all.

Until the day she was late.

Five minutes.

Luna had never been late.

Adrian's meeting was already delayed.

His patience was razor thin.

When she finally rushed in, slightly breathless, something inside him snapped.

"Explain."

Her brows lifted.

"My taxi broke down."

"You should have planned better."

"I did. The taxi did not."

There it was again.

That quiet humor.

Even now.

Even when he was clearly irritated.

He stood slowly.

Walked around his desk.

Stopped in front of her.

Too close.

"You think this is amusing?"

"No," she said calmly. "But I think shouting would be unnecessary."

His jaw flexed.

She smelled like vanilla and something floral.

His heartbeat shifted — not faster.

Sharper.

"You are very bold for someone who works under me."

She met his eyes directly.

"I work with you. Not under you."

Silence.

Something dangerous moved behind his gaze.

Not anger.

Interest.

What She Doesn't Know

Luna had loved him quietly for almost a year.

Not because he was powerful.

Not because he was feared.

But because she saw something no one else did.

He stayed late to personally review employee benefits.

He secretly funded hospital bills for injured workers.

He remembered small details.

He never lied unnecessarily.

He was not cruel.

He was controlled.

There was a difference.

She also knew something else.

Something she never told him.

She had been placed in Moretti Holdings three years ago.

Not randomly.

By his father.

To observe.

To report if Adrian ever became unstable.

Because rumors about his emotional detachment worried the old crime lord.

At first, it was just a job.

Write weekly reports.

Observe behavior.

Note aggression patterns.

But over time… she stopped sending full truths.

She softened her reports.

Then she delayed them.

Then she stopped sending them at all.

Because somewhere between board meetings and quiet late nights —

She fell in love with the monster she was supposed to monitor.

The Moment Everything Changes

One evening, as Luna worked late organizing financial records, the building lights suddenly cut out.

Emergency red lights flickered on.

Her heart jumped.

Footsteps echoed in the hallway.

Not security.

Too heavy.

Too many.

Her phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

She answered quietly.

"Leave," Adrian's voice said.

Cold. Controlled. But urgent.

"Sir—"

"Now."

Before she could move, her office door slammed open.

Two armed men stepped inside.

She froze.

Then—

A gunshot echoed down the corridor.

One man dropped instantly.

The second turned—

Another shot.

Silence.

Adrian stepped into the doorway.

Black suit. No panic. Gun lowered calmly.

His eyes scanned her body quickly.

"You're not hurt."

It wasn't a question.

"No."

He stepped closer.

Too close.

His hand wrapped around her wrist.

His thumb pressed against her pulse.

Feeling.

Checking.

And something in his expression changed.

Darkened.

"You are mine to protect," he said quietly.

Her breath caught.

That wasn't professional.

That wasn't normal.

That wasn't safe.

And yet—

She didn't pull away.

This is just the beginning
