Chapter 9 - The Ancient Spirit

The twins sat silently in their courtyard.

Neither spoke for a long time.

The revelation was simply too shocking.

Finally Michael rubbed his face.

"So let me get this straight."

"You're an ancient dragon turtle spirit that has been living inside our souls since birth?"

Correct.

Matthew frowned.

"And you've been watching us this whole time?"

Correct.

Michael raised an eyebrow.

"That's… a little creepy."

For a moment the ancient spirit didn't respond.

Then it let out a low rumbling sound that almost resembled laughter.

You humans have strange concerns.

Matthew leaned forward.

"If you're really an ancient being… why choose us?"

The dragon turtle's massive eyes glowed faintly.

Because your spirit roots are perfect.

Perfect Yin and Yang balance.

Something that appears once in millions of years.

The twins exchanged glances.

That certainly explained why their cultivation technique worked.

Michael crossed his arms.

"So what do you want from us?"

The dragon turtle answered calmly.

Nothing.

I am only a fragment of a destroyed soul.

I exist only to observe… and perhaps guide you.

Matthew asked carefully.

"Guide us in what?"

The ancient spirit's voice became distant.

Long ago I was ambushed by many powerful enemies.

They feared my mastery over Yin and Yang.

So I destroyed my own body to escape.

My soul shattered into fragments.

The twins listened quietly.

Most fragments were lost forever.

But one of them found you.

Michael scratched his head.

"So basically we got lucky."

Or unlucky.

Matthew thought about that.

"Why unlucky?"

The dragon turtle's eyes darkened slightly.

Because if my enemies ever discover you…

They will destroy you without hesitation.

Silence returned.

Michael sighed.

"Well that's comforting."

Matthew smiled slightly.

"At least we're not boring anymore."

The dragon turtle observed them quietly.

Then it spoke again.

For now… focus on cultivating.

Your technique is dangerous.

But if mastered… it will surpass ordinary cultivation.

Michael grinned.

"That's exactly what we were hoping for."
