Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: Behind Closed Doors

The school day finally ended, but the chaos from the hallways lingered in Lyra's mind. She walked home through the quiet streets of her neighborhood. Her house was small, unremarkable, and cozy in a way that made her feel safe. Her parents, Samuel and Grace Bennett, were in the living room. Her father was reading the newspaper while her mother prepared dinner. Lyra dropped her bag on the couch. "Hey," she said quietly. Her parents looked up. "Hi honey," Grace smiled. "How was school?" "Normal," Lyra said vaguely, not wanting to mention the betrayal, the mysterious girl, or Adrian's warning. Dinner was simple but warm. Spaghetti and salad. Nothing fancy, nothing luxurious. Just life. Lyra appreciated the ordinary. Here, there was no constant danger, no scheming, no whispers behind every corner. After dinner she retreated to her small bedroom, walls covered in posters and scribbles, a place where she could think without anyone watching. Meanwhile across town, the Vale estate loomed. Adrian's house was massive, all marble floors, dark wood panels, and high ceilings. His father, Richard Vale, a prominent businessman, was in his study reviewing documents while his mother, Helena, oversaw the staff in the kitchen. Adrian's room was a private sanctuary. Expensive, dark, and meticulously organized. Nothing in the room felt out of place except the faint tension that always lingered in his eyes. Tonight Darius was coming over. The moment Adrian heard the familiar engine of Darius' sports car, he felt a rare sense of relief. Darius was loud, chaotic, and infuriating at times, but he was the one person Adrian allowed to see the part of himself he didn't show to anyone else. Darius stepped into Adrian's room moments later, carrying a bag of snacks and a mischievous grin. "Hope you're ready for a proper night in," Darius said. Adrian didn't respond immediately. Instead, he leaned back in his leather chair and observed Darius, taking in the energy that always seemed to follow him. "I know why you came," Adrian said finally, his tone calm but edged with authority. "I need to make sure you're ready." Darius laughed. "Ready for what? You mean ready to sit and stare at walls all night?" Adrian ignored the jab. "You know what I mean. Valen showed up today." Darius froze. "That's… bad." Adrian's lips pressed into a thin line. "Worse than bad. She's dangerous. And she knows more than anyone should." Darius sank into the chair opposite Adrian's desk. "We need a plan." Adrian nodded slowly. "Exactly. We can't underestimate her. And we can't let her get close to Lyra." Darius smirked, tossing a snack into his mouth. "Speaking of Lyra… you're acting like you care, admit it." Adrian's jaw tightened. "I don't." Darius laughed, clearly not believing him. "Come on, admit it. She's been on your mind since the first day." Adrian's expression remained cold. "She's a distraction." Darius raised an eyebrow. "A distraction you can't stop thinking about. Yeah, right." Adrian leaned back in his chair, deliberately avoiding Darius' gaze. "You don't understand." Darius chuckled, leaning forward. "Try me. Or should I start listing all the times you've stared after her in class?" Adrian finally looked at him, eyes sharp. "That's enough." Darius grinned. "Admit it, Adrian. You like her." Adrian's lips pressed into a thin, unreadable line. "I don't." Darius burst out laughing. "Classic Vale denial. But you'll see, man. Soon enough, she's going to get under your skin even more." Back at the Bennett house, Lyra had moved to her bedroom window, gazing at the sky as the sun dipped below the rooftops. She wondered if Adrian and Darius had even left school yet. She shook her head, trying to push thoughts of the mysterious girl Valen and Adrian's warning out of her mind. But her heart wouldn't let her. There was something about Adrian that was impossible to ignore. Across the street from the Vale estate, Darius lounged in his own room, a sprawling penthouse apartment above his parents' tech company headquarters. His father, Jonathan Harcourt, was hosting a late-night meeting, and his mother, Vivienne, was traveling for charity work. Darius smirked at his reflection in the window. Tonight promised to be more interesting than most. Adrian, for all his wealth and control, was unpredictable when he was irritated. And Darius loved seeing him irritated. Hours passed with video games, laughter, and occasional tension as Adrian plotted against Valen, while Darius continued to tease him relentlessly. At one point Darius nudged him. "Seriously, Adrian. Don't try to hide it. Lyra's got you wrapped around her finger." Adrian's jaw tightened. "She's not mine." Darius laughed so hard he almost spilled his drink. "Keep telling yourself that, man. But your face says otherwise." Adrian ignored him, focusing on a strategy board for dealing with Valen, but Darius didn't stop grinning. The night went on. Midnight approached, and Darius stretched. "Sleepover, Vale style. Not bad." Adrian didn't respond. He just adjusted his chair and stared out the window, mind racing with thoughts of Lyra, Valen, and the growing chaos surrounding Ravenscroft. Outside, the city lights shimmered, calm yet deceptive. And for the first time that night, Adrian allowed himself a thought he hadn't dared to admit. Lyra was more than just a distraction. She was a complication. And complications, Adrian Vale knew, could be dangerous especially when someone else was already playing with fire.
