Chapter 21 - A New Transfer Student

The announcement came during morning assembly.

I wasn't expecting anything unusual.

Until the principal cleared his throat.

"We have a new student joining Ridgeway High starting today."

The hall became quiet.

"A transfer from Westbrook Academy."

My brain paused.

Westbrook?

Slowly, I turned my head.

Ethan's expression didn't change — but I could tell he was paying attention now.

Then the doors of the auditorium opened.

And Daniel walked in.

Confident as always.

Shock in the Room

Whispers spread instantly.

"Isn't that the guy from the competition?"

"Why is he here?"

Daniel walked toward the stage calmly.

He didn't look nervous.

In fact…

He looked comfortable.

The principal smiled.

"Daniel Hayes will be joining Grade 11."

Grade 11.

Same grade as us.

My stomach tightened slightly.

This wasn't random.

Daniel looked straight at the crowd.

Then his eyes stopped on me.

And he smiled.

Not teasing.

Not arrogant.

Just confident.

After Assembly

The moment we returned to class, the atmosphere was buzzing.

Daniel would be in our school.

In our grade.

In our environment.

Maya leaned toward me.

"Why would he transfer here?"

I didn't know.

But something about it felt intentional.

When the classroom door opened later…

Daniel walked in.

The teacher introduced him.

And of course…

There was only one available seat.

Next to mine.

I glanced at Ethan.

His expression was calm.

Too calm.

Daniel sat down beside me casually.

"Looks like we're classmates now," he said.

"Yes," I replied.

Ethan didn't look at Daniel directly.

But I could feel the tension.

Small Tension

During class, Daniel leaned slightly toward me.

"Your teamwork was impressive during the competition."

"Thanks."

"Next time, we won't tie."

I smirked slightly.

"We'll see."

Across the room, Ethan was focused on his notebook.

But I noticed something.

He wasn't writing.

He was listening.

After class, Daniel stood up.

"Lena, right?"

"Yes."

"I'll be expecting to work with you in future school activities."

Before I could answer, Ethan finally spoke.

"School activities are based on team assignments."

Daniel turned toward him.

"I know."

There was a short silence.

Then Daniel smiled.

"I'm just saying… I'm looking forward to competing again."

Ethan met his eyes.

"So am I."

No hostility.

Just silent challenge.

Clara's Reaction

Later that day, I noticed Clara watching from across the hallway.

She looked surprised.

Not angry.

Just thoughtful.

Daniel transferring here changed the balance.

The rivalry was no longer just competition day.

Now it was daily.

And that meant pressure.

Not only for us…

But for our "fake relationship."

Because now everyone would be watching.

Even closer than before.

As I packed my bag at the end of the day, Ethan walked beside me.

"Daniel's transfer is strategic," he said quietly.

"What do you mean?"

"He doesn't do anything without purpose."

That made me think.

Was he here to challenge us?

Or something else?

Ethan glanced at me.

"Stay focused."

I smiled slightly.

"I always am."

But deep down…

I knew this wasn't just about school anymore.

The story was getting bigger.

And Daniel's arrival…

Was going to change everything.
