Chapter 10 - The Librarian's Volley

"We don't have time for a solo performance," I snapped, the [Empathic Shield] vibrating with a sudden, sharp spike of terror coming from the library. "Yuna's in trouble. We go in together, now!"

We sprinted across the maintenance bridge. Below us, the library's glass facade was spider-webbing. A creature with an elongated, pulsating neck—a [Level 4 Screamer]—was let out a high-pitched wail that made my teeth ache and the glass vibrate until it shattered.

"Grayson, shield the ears! Nicholas, Yosef, frontline!" I commanded.

We burst through the third-floor doors just as the Screamer let out another blast. The sound hit me like a physical wall, my [Sanity Meter] flickering as I absorbed the collective wincing of my team.

[BATTLE START: THE LIBRARY FOYER]

Nicholas led the charge, leaping from the mezzanine railing and using the momentum to swing his bat in a massive [Home Run] arc. He slammed into a group of Shamblers crowding the stairs, clearing a path.

Beside him, Yosef was a blur of black fabric and carbon fiber. He didn't just swing his staff; he used it to vault over obstacles, his strikes landing with surgical precision on the monsters' temples. He moved like water, flowing around the chaos.

"There!" Neveah pointed to the Reference Desk.

A girl with a high ponytail was standing on top of a pile of encyclopedias, her recurve bow drawn back to her ear. She let fly a flu-flu arrow that hissed through the air, pinning a zombie's head to a wooden bookshelf.

[PARTY MEMBER SPOTTED: YUNA ROCKWELL]

[CLASS: SHARPSHOOTER / PE MAJOR]

"Yuna, duck!" Yosef roared.

The Screamer turned its bloated neck toward her, its throat expanding for a lethal sonic blast.

Grayson didn't hesitate. He kicked his floor buffer into [Overclock]. The machine screamed louder than the monster, the saw blades glowing dull red from the friction. He lunged forward, the "Whirlwind" carving a path through the desks, and slammed the spinning blades directly into the Screamer's throat just as it opened its mouth.

The sound died in a spray of blue light and black ichor.

[BOSS MINION DEFEATED: LEVEL 4 SCREAMER]

[EXP GAINED: MASSIVE]

Yuna hopped down from the desk, her bow still raised until she saw Yosef. The relief on her face was so strong I felt a wave of dizziness from the empathic feedback.

"Took you long enough," she panted, her eyes darting to Nicholas. She noticed his P.E. jersey and gave a sharp, competitive nod. "Nice swing, Slugger. A bit wide on the follow-through, but it worked."

Nicholas grinned, his face flushed with the Level Up energy. "I'll work on the form if you keep the line clear, Archer."

[PARTY MEMBER ADDED: YUNA ROCKWELL]

[PARTY SIZE: 6/12]

[RANK UPDATED: #29 — THE ALUMNI]

We were officially in the top thirty. I looked at the Rockwell twins—the Architect and the Archer. They stood back-to-back, a perfect unit of precision and speed. With them, we weren't just a survival group anymore. We were a strike team.

"We have the team," I said, wiping a splash of ichor off my thesis. "And we have an hour until the 'Harvest' begins at the Bell Tower. Yosef, you know the campus layout best. What's the fastest way there that avoids the open quad?"

Yosef looked at the ceiling, his Architecture sub-skill clearly mapping out the structural veins of the university. "The underground utility tunnels. They're dark, and they're cramped, but they lead directly to the tower's foundation."

I held up my hand as we reached the heavy iron grate leading to the utility tunnels. The air coming from below was pitch-black and smelled of damp earth and rust.

"Wait," I whispered. I felt a strange vibration in the air, and two blue icons pulsed in the center of our collective vision.

[PARTY SIZE MILESTONE REACHED: 6 MEMBERS]

[SELECT TWO PARTY SKILLS]

Without needing to debate it, I reached out and swiped the first two options. In a tunnel this narrow and dark, we needed every tactical advantage.

[PARTY SKILL ACQUIRED: HIVE MIND]

Effect:Members can see through each other's eyes in low-light conditions. Shared spatial awareness.

[PARTY SKILL ACQUIRED: MOMENTUM]

Effect: +2% Movement and Attack Speed for every kill, stacking up to 50%. Resets after 30 seconds of peace.

As the skills activated, everyone gasped. My vision flickered—for a second, I saw my own back through Nicholas's eyes, and then a bird's-eye view of the corridor through Yosef's heightened senses. Our minds felt linked, a silent hum of "The Alumni" connecting us.

But as the link solidified, I felt a sharp, stabbing pain in my temples. My [Empathic Shield] was working overtime, pulling the cold dread of the dark tunnels out of the others and dumping it into my own mind. I stumbled, my hand catching the rough brick wall.

"Viv?" Neveah was at my side in a second.

As a Healer, her connection to the party's vitals was more sensitive. She reached out to check my pulse, but the moment her skin touched mine, she flinched as if she'd been shocked.

A tiny, flickering system glitch appeared over my head, visible only to her for a split second:

[STATUS: BUFFERING PARTY TERROR... SANITY DRAIN: 18%]

Neveah's eyes widened. She looked at the rest of the group—who were suddenly standing taller, looking braver and more focused—and then back at me. I looked pale, my eyes shadowed with a fatigue that didn't match our recent rest.

"Vivienne," she whispered, her voice trembling. "What did you do? Why am I feeling... your heart racing, but everyone else is so calm?"

I pulled my arm away gently, straightening my graduation gown. "It's just the stress of the rank, Nev. I'm a Behavioral Analyst. I'm wired to stay alert."

She didn't look convinced. She looked at the "Guardian" aura flickering faintly around my feet—a soft, bruised purple light. She caught the hint: I wasn't just leading them. I was carrying them.

"Don't," she said, her voice low so the boys wouldn't hear. "You can't take it all, Viv. You'll break."

"I'll break when we're off this campus," I replied firmly. "Nicholas, Yosef—lead the way. We have a Harvest to stop."

We descended into the dark. With [Hive Mind] active, the pitch-black tunnel turned into a glowing grid of heat signatures and shared sight. We moved like a single, multi-limbed organism.

Scritch. Scritch.

The sound came from the pipes above.

[MOMENTUM ACTIVATED]

Yosef didn't even have to look up. Through my eyes, he saw the shadow dropping toward his head. He spun his staff, the carbon fiber whistling through the air, and cracked the creature's skull before it even landed.

[KILL STACK: 1]

[SPEED INCREASED]

"Keep moving!" I urged. "The faster we kill, the faster we get to that tower."

The Alumni: Tunnel Progress

Current Rank: #29

Momentum Stack: 1/25

Sanity Meter (Vivienne): 82% (Decreasing...)
