Chapter 10: The Fox's Fire

The interior of the mag-lev train was a whirlwind of shattered glass and screaming alarms. The high-pitched whistle of the wind through the torn roof competed with the heavy, hydraulic thud of the Iron Maiden soldier's boots. But all of that was drowned out by the sudden, mesmerizing crackle of blue fox-fire.

Mei Hatsume—or rather, the entity she had just become—stood at the center of the car. Her transformation into Kyubimon wasn't like Izumi's humanoid grace or Himiko's gothic armor. She was a massive, majestic four-legged fox, her fur a brilliant gold, her paws wreathed in ghostly blue flames. Nine spectral tails swayed behind her, each tipped with a flickering spirit-light.

"Whoa... talk about a major hardware upgrade!" Kyubimon's voice was a strange, harmonic blend of Mei's manic energy and an ancient, feline wisdom. She looked at her own paws, flexing her claws as they dug into the metal floor of the train. "The sensory input is off the charts! I can see the data-streams in the air! I can smell the cooling fans in that gold-plated bucket of bolts!"

The Iron Maiden soldier didn't hesitate. His visor flashed a violent crimson as he raised a wrist-mounted railgun. "Target: Uncatalogued Beast-Type. Threat Level: Severe. Initiating Full-Format."

He fired. A slug of concentrated, purple "Delete-Code" screamed toward Kyubimon.

"Mei, move!" Kazemon shouted, her butterfly wings buzzing as she prepared to intercept.

"Don't worry, wings! I've got a move for this!" Kyubimon let out a resonant howl that vibrated the very atoms of the train car.

"Dragon Wheel!"

Kyubimon began to spin with impossible speed, her body becoming a literal vortex of blue flames. The fire didn't just burn; it acted as a solid, rotating shield. The Delete-Code slug hit the flames and was instantly incinerated, reduced to harmless white pixels. The fire-vortex then expanded, slamming into the Iron Maiden soldier and pinning him against the back wall of the car.

Outside, the Cyber-Gale was under heavy fire from the two remaining interceptors. Sistermon Noir was clinging to the exterior of the jet, her twin pistols barking as she wove a web of dark energy to deflect the incoming missiles.

"Melissa! We're losing the shielding on the starboard engine!" Noir yelled through the comms. "If we don't end this now, we're going into the bay!"

"I'm trying!" Melissa shouted back, her fingers flying across the console. "But the Commission has a remote-lock on the mag-lev's brakes! It's wired to the Iron Maiden soldier's heartbeat! If he stays active, the train hits the terminal at Mach 1!"

Inside the train, Kazemon heard the update. She looked at Kyubimon, who was currently wrestling the armored soldier, her blue-flamed tails whipping around his limbs like glowing ropes.

"Mei! We have to take him out, but we can't kill him! He's the key to the brakes!" Kazemon shouted.

"A hardware override? Easy-peasy!" Kyubimon grinned, her nine tails suddenly converging into a single, needle-sharp point of blue light. "I'll just... 're-calibrate' his settings!"

Kyubimon lunged, her glowing tails striking the soldier's chest-plate exactly where the digital core hummed. "Fox Tail Inferno!"

The blue fire didn't explode; it flowed into the armor, seeking out the corrupted code like a heat-seeking virus. The purple "X" on the soldier's visor flickered, turned green, and then shattered.

[CORE OVERRIDE: SUCCESS]

[BRAKE LOCK: RELEASED]

The mag-lev train let out a deafening screech as the emergency magnetic brakes finally engaged. Sparks showered the tracks like a thousand suns as the train began to decelerate, the G-force slamming everyone toward the front of the car. Kazemon grabbed David Shield, shielding him with her wings, while Kyubimon dug her claws into the floor to anchor herself.

Outside, the sudden deceleration caused the interceptors to overshoot the train. Sensing the loss of their primary target, the pilots initiated a "Scrub-Protocol," their craft self-destructing in a flash of white light to prevent DATS from capturing their tech.

The train finally came to a shuddering halt, only inches away from the terminal buffers.

Silence fell over the cabin, broken only by the crackle of dying fox-fire. Kyubimon's form dissolved in a shower of golden sparks, leaving a soot-covered, grinning Mei Hatsume standing in the wreckage. She was holding a golden-and-yellow D-Tector that looked like it had been forged from sunlight.

"Man... the frame-rate on that evolution is incredible," Mei breathed, wiping a smudge of grease from her cheek. "I think I'm in love with this baby."

David Shield stood up, shaking, and looked at the three girls—Izumi, Himiko (who had just landed with the Cyber-Gale), and Mei. He looked at the devices in their hands and then at the sky, where the Commission's drones were already retreating.

"You're the DigiDestined," David whispered. "The bridge... it's actually happening."

But the victory was short-lived. A holographic projection shimmered into existence from the remains of the Iron Maiden's helmet. It was a woman with cold, silver hair and a sharp, calculating gaze—the President of the Hero Public Safety Commission.

"Congratulations, children," the President's voice was as cold as dry ice. "You've successfully secured the Fox and the Shield. But the game has only just begun. You've declared war on the system that keeps this society standing. From this day forward, you are the villains in the eyes of the world."

The projection flickered out.

Principal Nezu's voice came through their earpieces, grave and steady. girls. You've gathered four of the six. The Commission has officially labeled DATS as a terrorist cell. We are going deep underground."

Izumi looked at her friends—her sisters. She felt the wind around her, no longer a gentle breeze, but the beginning of a storm.

"Let them label us," Izumi said, her voice echoing with the power of the Spirit. "The wind doesn't care about labels. It just blows the truth into the light."
