Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 – The Scavenger of Helios

Chapter 1 – The Scavenger of Helios

The sky above Mega City Helios was never truly dark. A dull crimson glow stretched across the horizon where the Rift Zones bled into the world. Towering alloy walls surrounded the city like the ribs of a giant skeleton, reinforced with plasma cannons that hummed endlessly. Beyond those walls lay a different world—a world of mutation where humans were no longer at the top of the food chain.

Inside the outer district of Helios, the slums were packed with rusted steel houses stacked on top of one another like unstable towers of scrap metal. Neon lights flickered weakly in narrow streets filled with scavengers, hunters, and desperate survivors trying to live another day. In this place, life was cheap. Many people disappeared overnight, and nobody asked questions.

Kai Ren moved quietly through the alleyways, his worn backpack hanging loosely from one shoulder. His clothes were stained with dust and dried blood that had long since lost its color. No one stared. In the slums, stains like that were normal. His eyes remained calm and observant, constantly scanning his surroundings. Every scavenger learned the same lesson sooner or later: the weak died quickly.

Kai stopped at a reinforced iron gate leading outside the city. Beyond it stretched a wasteland of broken buildings, collapsed highways, and twisted steel towers. This was the Outer Rift Zone. A dangerous place for ordinary citizens, but for scavengers like him, it was survival. A guard inside a checkpoint booth glanced up lazily as Kai approached.

"Another scavenger run?"

Kai simply nodded and slid a worn metal tag across the counter. The guard scanned it, and a short electronic beep confirmed his identity. The gate slowly opened. No warnings followed. The guard had seen too many scavengers leave and never return.

The world outside the walls felt colder. The wind carried a metallic scent mixed with decay. In the distance, broken skyscrapers leaned at unnatural angles while faint purple mist leaked from unstable dimensional fractures scattered across the ruins. These fractures were called Rifts. Twenty years ago they appeared without warning, tearing open space itself. From them came monsters—creatures that were neither animal nor alien but something twisted in between.

Humanity nearly lost the planet during the first Rift outbreak. Entire cities vanished within weeks. The only reason civilization survived was because scientists discovered something hidden inside those creatures: Gene Fragments. Strange pieces of DNA capable of merging with human cells and pushing the body beyond natural limits. Strength, speed, endurance, and reflexes could all be enhanced. Humanity entered the era of Gene Evolution.

But evolution came at a price. Gene fragments were rare and controlled by powerful corporations and military organizations. Only the wealthy could afford the strongest upgrades. For people in the slums, survival depended on scavenging the dangerous Rift Zones and selling whatever mutated materials they could find.

Kai stepped deeper into the ruins, his boots crunching softly on broken glass and concrete. His eyes scanned every shadow. The Rift Zone was quiet now, but quiet never lasted long.

A faint growl echoed from a collapsed building nearby.

Kai froze. His hand slowly moved toward the short combat blade strapped to his thigh.

Moments later, the creature appeared.

A Mutant Bloodhound.

Its body was twice the size of a normal dog, muscles bulging beneath grey skin reinforced by unnatural bone plates. Purple veins pulsed beneath its flesh as its glowing eyes locked onto Kai. Its nose twitched. It had already caught his scent.

The Bloodhound lunged.

Kai moved instantly, twisting his body to the side as the creature slammed into the ground where he had been standing. The concrete cracked beneath its claws. Fast. Too fast for an ordinary human.

Kai stepped forward and drove his blade downward. The weapon pierced the creature's neck, but the Bloodhound refused to die immediately. It snapped its jaws toward his arm, teeth scraping dangerously close to his sleeve. Kai pulled the blade free and struck again, this time deeper. The creature collapsed with a choking growl before finally going still.

Silence returned to the ruins.

Kai exhaled slowly, steadying his breathing. Even small mutant beasts could easily kill an unmodified human. He crouched beside the corpse and quickly began working. From his pouch he pulled a small extraction tool and carefully opened the creature's chest cavity. Scavengers never wasted time.

After a moment of searching, his tool struck something solid. A small crystal-like organ was embedded near the creature's spine. The Gene Core. It glowed faintly, pulsing with strange energy.

Rare.

Very rare.

Kai wiped the blood from the crystal and sealed it inside a small container. Even a damaged gene core could sell for enough credits to survive another week.

But before he could stand, the ground beneath him vibrated slightly.

At first he thought another monster was approaching, but the feeling was different. The vibration came from below.

A crack appeared in the concrete nearby. Then another. The floor suddenly collapsed inward, revealing a narrow tunnel hidden beneath the ruins.

Kai stared into the darkness below as cold air drifted upward from the opening. Something deep inside the tunnel emitted a faint blue glow.

Curiosity could be deadly in the Rift Zone.

But sometimes danger meant opportunity.

Kai activated the flashlight on his wrist and climbed carefully into the tunnel. Dust covered the walls, and strange metallic structures protruded from the ground like fragments of an ancient machine. None of it looked human.

The deeper he walked, the brighter the glow became.

Eventually the tunnel opened into a small underground chamber. At its center lay a smooth metallic sphere embedded in the stone floor. The object hummed softly, releasing waves of blue light.

Kai stepped closer.

The sphere reacted instantly.

Its surface unfolded like a mechanical flower, and before Kai could react, a beam of light shot directly into his chest.

Pain exploded through his body. His muscles locked as his vision blurred. Something cold spread through his veins, rewriting the structure of his cells.

Then a mechanical voice echoed inside his mind.

[Ultra Gene Evolution System Activated]

[Host DNA Compatibility Confirmed]

[Binding Sequence Initiated]

Kai collapsed onto the ground as waves of energy surged through his body. Something deep inside his DNA was changing. Evolving.

Far above the ruins of the Rift Zone, hidden satellites belonging to powerful corporations suddenly detected a new and impossible energy signature.

The birth of something unknown.

Something dangerous.

Kai Ren did not understand what had just happened.

But from this moment forward, his evolution had begun.
