Chapter 383: Out of Reach
Day 30 opened with nothing left to send.
Kai walked the camp's outer edge before breakfast, pool at ninety-five percent, the overnight ceiling holding steady three days running now. There were no letters on the table. No rider due back. Nothing waiting on an answer from anyone but the people already here.
He found that he did not know what to do with a morning like that.
The camp still moved, of course. Fires got built. Water got hauled. Pell walked her usual round of the six markers before anyone else was properly awake. She checked each one the way she always did, in case the one morning she skipped it was the morning something changed. It hadn't. She told Kai as much in passing, without stopping.
