Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Weight of Duty

The smell of ozone and cordite was thick on the wind. For days, the rumble of artillery had been a constant companion, shaking the very air around the Iron Vanguard's encampment. Captain Aris Thorne, a veteran of more battles than he cared to remember, stood at the ridge overlooking the desolate valley that led to the Shadow Citadel. His heart heavy with the news he had received just hours ago.

The enemy, the Crimson Legion, had fortified the citadel with terrifying new weapons – alchemical abominations that could tear through armor like paper and poison the land itself. His company, the "Thunderers," was tasked with leading the assault on the citadel's primary supply line, a heavily-guarded mountain pass known as the Serpent's Back.

He looked at his men, now resting in the temporary camp. They were brave, skilled, and dedicated, but they were exhausted and undersupplied. As he checked his rifle, a sturdy piece of work forged in the Iron Vanguard's own foundries, he knew that the success of the mission, and the very survival of his men, rested on his shoulders. The memory of the lost men he had led weighed heavy on him, and the responsibility felt suffocating.

Aris found comfort in a small, worn token in his pocket – a locket containing a lock of his daughter's hair. It was a reminder of why he fought, but today, it was also a reminder of the price of failure. The Crimson Legion would not hesitate to destroy everything and everyone he loved. With a resolute breath, he gathered his officers, their grim faces reflecting his own determination. The siege had begun, and there was no turning back.
