Chapter 2 - CHAPTER 1: THE GIRL WHO STOPPED BELIEVING

Amara Bello stood by the hospital window, watching the morning traffic slowly build outside. The city of Lagos was already alive with honking cars, rushing commuters, and the endless rhythm of a place that never truly slept. For everyone else, it was just another busy day. For Amara, it was another day of work, another day of keeping her heart safely locked away.

She adjusted the sleeves of her nurse's uniform and tied her hair neatly behind her head. Her reflection in the glass looked calm and professional, but beneath the surface, there was a quiet sadness she had long learned to hide. Years ago, she had believed in love, in promises, in forever. But life had taught her that some promises were meant to be broken.

The hospital corridors buzzed with activity as doctors and nurses hurried past each other. Amara walked through the hallway with practiced confidence, greeting patients with a gentle smile. Caring for others had become her purpose. It was easier to heal strangers than to face the wounds inside her own heart.

"Good morning, Nurse Amara," an elderly patient said warmly as she entered his room.

"Good morning, Mr. Ade," she replied softly, checking the chart beside his bed. "How are you feeling today?"

"Better now that I see your smile," he joked, his eyes twinkling.

Amara chuckled lightly, adjusting his pillow. "Flattery won't make your medicine taste any better."

The small moment of laughter filled the room, but when she stepped back into the hallway, the quiet emptiness returned. Moments like those reminded her why she loved her job. Helping people gave her life meaning. It distracted her from memories she tried not to revisit.

As she continued her rounds, her colleague Lila waved from the nurse's station.

"Amara! You look like someone who forgot what fun feels like," Lila teased.

Amara rolled her eyes playfully. "And you look like someone who hasn't started work yet."

"Work will always be there," Lila replied dramatically. "But life? Life needs romance!"

Amara shook her head. "Romance is overrated."

Lila stared at her in disbelief. "You used to write love poems in nursing school."

"That was before reality happened," Amara said quietly.

Her friend softened. "You know not everyone is the same as… him."

Amara's chest tightened slightly at the unspoken name. She quickly turned away, pretending to organize patient files. Some memories were like scars—faded on the surface but still painful if touched.

The truth was, once upon a time, Amara had loved someone with her whole heart. She had believed every promise he made, every dream they shared. But when he left without explanation, he didn't just break her heart—he shattered her belief in love itself.

Since then, she had made a silent promise to herself: no more risks, no more vulnerability, no more heartbreak.

Outside, the sun climbed higher above the skyline of Lagos, casting golden light through the hospital windows. To everyone else, the day held endless possibilities.

But for Amara Bello, love was no longer one of them.

At least, that was what she believed.

Because somewhere in the city, a man she had never met was about to walk into her life—and change everything she thought she knew about love. ❤️📖
