Chapter 5 - When the Bells Began to Ring

The alarm bell of Valdarin had not rung in nearly sixteen years.

Most citizens had forgotten what it sounded like.

Children born after the border conflicts had never heard it at all.

Which was why, when the heavy iron bell began to thunder across the night sky, the entire city froze in confusion.

BOOM.

The sound rolled through the streets like distant thunder.

BOOM.

Lanterns lit inside houses.

Doors creaked open.

People stepped into the streets wearing half-buttoned coats and confused expressions.

"What's happening?"

"Is it a fire?"

"Bandits?"

The bell rang again.

Louder.

Longer.

More urgent.

And suddenly everyone understood something was wrong.

Very wrong.

---

At the northern gate, Thomas Reed leaned heavily against the stone wall, gripping a spear with trembling hands.

His ribs burned with pain every time he inhaled.

Blood from a cut on his forehead dripped slowly into his beard.

But he did not move.

Because beyond the gate…

The road was filling with shapes.

Gray figures emerging from the forest like shadows peeling away from the trees.

Step.

Drag.

Step.

Drag.

There were too many to count.

Lukas stared in horror.

"There are dozens…"

Thomas shook his head slowly.

"No."

More shapes emerged from the darkness behind the first wave.

"…There are hundreds."

One of the younger guards swallowed hard.

"We can't stop that many."

Thomas gritted his teeth.

"We don't have to stop them."

He pointed toward the city behind them.

"We only need to slow them down long enough for the people to wake up."

The guard looked at him like he had lost his mind.

"You're asking us to die."

Thomas met his gaze.

"I'm asking you to stand your ground."

For several seconds no one spoke.

Then the crossbowman quietly loaded another bolt.

"I didn't join the guard to run."

Another guard nodded.

"Neither did I."

Lukas tightened his grip on his spear despite the blood soaking through his sleeve.

"…Let's make them regret coming here."

Thomas smiled faintly.

"Good."

Then he raised his voice.

"Form a line!"

The guards moved quickly.

Five men positioned themselves across the gate entrance, spears lowered.

Two crossbowmen stood behind them.

The creatures continued approaching.

Their black eyes reflected the lantern light.

Thomas whispered under his breath.

"Hold…"

The first creature reached the gate.

Its head tilted slowly.

Studying them.

Then it lunged.

---

The battle exploded into motion.

Spears struck forward.

Two creatures were impaled instantly.

Black mist burst from their bodies like smoke from shattered glass.

But the creatures behind them did not stop.

They climbed over the fallen.

The gate guards fought desperately.

Spears stabbed.

Crossbows fired.

Creatures fell.

But more replaced them.

Lukas screamed as one claw slashed across his chest armor.

The metal buckled.

Thomas slammed his spear through the creature's skull.

"Stay focused!"

Another creature leaped onto the gate wall.

One of the crossbowmen barely had time to turn before the claws tore through his shoulder.

The man collapsed screaming.

Thomas's heart pounded in his chest.

This wasn't a fight.

This was a wave.

And the wave wasn't slowing.

"Fall back!" someone shouted.

Thomas shook his head violently.

"If we fall back now they'll flood the streets!"

A creature lunged toward him.

Thomas drove his spear into its chest.

The shaft snapped.

The creature grabbed his arm.

Its claws dug into his coat.

For a split second their eyes met.

Those empty black voids.

Studying him.

Learning him.

Then a crossbow bolt struck the creature's skull.

The impact tore its head backward.

Black mist exploded outward.

The creature collapsed.

Thomas turned.

Behind him stood Captain Elena Varis.

Commander of the night guard.

Her armor gleamed in the lantern light.

Her sword was already drawn.

"You're doing a terrible job holding this gate," she said calmly.

Thomas almost laughed in relief.

"Nice of you to join us."

Elena stepped forward.

Her blade moved like lightning.

The first creature that reached her lost its head instantly.

The second lost both arms.

The third was cut clean in half.

The guards stared in awe.

Elena did not slow.

"Push them back!" she ordered.

The guards roared and advanced.

For a moment…

The creatures actually began to retreat.

But then something changed.

The creatures stopped.

All of them.

At once.

Their heads turned toward the forest.

Even Elena hesitated.

"What are they doing?"

Then the forest moved.

Not the trees.

Something behind them.

Something large.

The ground trembled slightly.

Thomas felt the vibration through his boots.

"Oh no…"

A shape began to emerge from the darkness.

At first it looked like a giant shadow.

Then it stepped into the moonlight.

It was enormous.

At least three meters tall.

Its limbs were thicker than tree trunks.

And its black eyes glowed faintly with purple light.

The smaller creatures stepped aside.

Like soldiers making way for a commander.

Elena's voice dropped.

"…That one's different."

Thomas swallowed.

"How do we kill that?"

The giant creature slowly opened its mouth.

And spoke.

One word.

Broken.

Ancient.

"…OPEN."

Behind it…

The sky above Valdarin cracked wider

For several seconds after the giant creature spoke, no one at the northern gate moved.

The word echoed strangely in the night air.

"…OPEN."

It was not spoken like a human word.

It sounded older.

Rough.

Like a sound dragged across stone.

Even the smaller gray creatures had gone still.

They stood scattered across the road outside the gate, their black eyes turned toward the towering figure that had emerged from the forest behind them.

The ground trembled again as the giant creature took another step forward.

Moonlight revealed more of its form.

It was massive.

Nearly three meters tall.

Its skin was darker than the others, a deep ash-gray that almost looked like burned stone. Thick muscles twisted beneath its skin, and its long arms ended in claws large enough to tear through armor.

But the most disturbing difference was its eyes.

Unlike the smaller creatures, whose eyes were pure black voids…

This one's eyes glowed faintly purple.

A dim, pulsing light that seemed almost alive.

Captain Elena Varis narrowed her gaze.

"…So they have leaders."

Thomas wiped blood from his face.

"That's bad, isn't it?"

Elena did not answer.

Instead she stepped forward, sword raised.

"Archers!"

Two remaining crossbowmen raised their weapons immediately.

"Wait for my signal."

The giant creature stopped several meters from the gate.

Its head tilted slowly.

It looked at the guards.

At the corpses of its fallen kin scattered across the ground.

At the broken gate doors.

And then it looked up.

Toward the city walls.

Toward the lanterns burning behind the defenders.

The creature's mouth moved again.

"…Light."

The word came out distorted.

As if language itself was still unfamiliar.

Thomas felt his stomach twist.

"It's learning."

Elena nodded once.

"Yes."

The creature lifted one enormous arm.

The smaller gray creatures began to move again.

Not rushing blindly this time.

They spread out along the road like a wave preparing to crash.

Elena spoke calmly.

"Fire."

The crossbows snapped.

Two bolts struck the giant creature's chest.

They did not penetrate deeply.

The creature barely reacted.

Thomas stared.

"…You've got to be kidding me."

The giant creature slowly reached up.

Pulled one of the bolts from its chest.

Then crushed it in its hand.

The wood splintered.

The metal tip bent.

Then it looked directly at Elena.

And began to walk forward.

---

"Hold the line!" Elena shouted.

Spears lowered again.

The smaller creatures rushed the gate.

The defenders fought desperately.

Steel stabbed.

Bolts fired.

Gray bodies fell.

Black mist filled the air like smoke from a battlefield.

But the creatures kept coming.

They climbed over their fallen.

Clawed at the stone walls.

Leapt toward the guards.

Lukas cried out as one creature slammed into him.

Thomas grabbed the attacker and drove a dagger through its skull.

"Stay behind me!"

Another creature leaped over the gate.

One of the guards screamed as claws tore across his back.

The battle descended into chaos.

But through it all…

The giant creature continued walking.

Slow.

Unstoppable.

Elena stepped forward to meet it.

"You want the gate?"

She lifted her sword.

"You'll have to come through me."

The creature stopped.

Its glowing eyes fixed on her.

For a moment the two simply stared at one another.

Then the creature moved.

---

The clash shook the gate.

Elena's sword struck first.

Her blade flashed upward and sliced across the creature's chest.

The impact should have cut deep.

Instead it barely scratched the surface.

Black mist seeped from the wound.

The creature swung its arm.

Elena jumped back just in time.

The claws slammed into the stone gate wall.

The impact shattered part of the masonry.

Chunks of rock exploded outward.

Thomas shouted.

"Captain!"

Elena rolled beneath another swing and slashed again.

This time the blade struck the creature's leg.

The cut was deeper.

The creature staggered slightly.

"See?" Thomas muttered.

"You can bleed."

But the creature did not bleed.

The wound released more black mist.

Then it grabbed the broken gate beam beside it.

And ripped it free.

The wooden support tore loose with a cracking roar.

The gate doors sagged immediately.

Thomas's eyes widened.

"Uh… that's bad."

The creature lifted the beam.

And swung it like a club.

Elena barely avoided the blow.

The beam smashed into the gate doors.

Wood exploded.

The hinges tore loose.

The entire gate structure groaned.

Elena shouted.

"Fall back!"

But it was too late.

With one final swing…

The creature shattered the gate.

---

The wooden doors collapsed inward.

The northern gate of Valdarin was open.

For a moment everyone froze.

Even the smaller creatures hesitated.

Then the giant creature stepped through the broken gate.

Into the city.

The lantern light illuminated its massive form.

Citizens gathered farther down the street stared in horror.

One woman screamed.

People began running.

"Monsters!"

"Run!"

Panic spread instantly.

Thomas grabbed Lukas by the arm.

"We have to move!"

The guards retreated down the street, fighting as they went.

Creatures flooded through the broken gate behind them.

The city of Valdarin erupted into chaos.

---

Across the city…

The alarm bells rang louder.

Inside the academy tower, Elon Varik heard them immediately.

He turned toward the window.

"What now?"

Beside him, Arian's eyes narrowed.

"…The gate."

Elon frowned.

"How do you know?"

"I can feel it."

Arian stepped closer to the window.

The crack in the sky above the city had grown larger.

Much larger.

Dark energy pulsed faintly along its edges.

Arian whispered.

"They're coming through."

Elon's voice trembled.

"…Who is?"

Arian did not answer.

Because at that moment…

Something moved inside the crack.

Something enormous.

A shape shifting in the darkness beyond the sky.

Elon staggered backward.

"Gods…"

"What have we done?"

---

Back at the northern street, Thomas and the surviving guards formed another defensive line.

The giant creature approached again.

Behind it, dozens of smaller creatures poured into the city.

Elena raised her sword once more.

Her voice was steady.

"We hold here."

Thomas stared at the monster.

"You're serious?"

"If it reaches the inner streets, thousands will die."

Thomas sighed.

"…Then I guess we hold."

The giant creature stopped a few steps away.

Its purple eyes glowed brighter.

It raised one clawed hand.

And spoke again.

"…OPEN."

The sky above Valdarin split wider.

And far beyond that crack…

Something ancient began to descend.
