Chapter 3 - The Guardian of the Secret Portal

Chapter 3: The Blue-Eyed Watcher

Rohan continued walking along the glowing moss path. The further he went, the more the forest seemed to change. The leaves weren't just green anymore; they shimmered with shades of silver and violet. Suddenly, the glowing trail ended abruptly at the edge of a crystal-clear pond.

"Where did it go?" Rohan muttered, checking his map.

A sudden splash made him jump. A small, bright blue squirrel emerged from the water—but it wasn't swimming. It was walking on the surface of the water as if it were solid ground. The squirrel's eyes were a piercing, magical blue, and it was wearing a tiny golden collar.

"You're late, Guardian," the squirrel said, its voice clear and sharp.

Rohan fell backward in surprise. "You... you can talk?"

"I can do many things, Rohan. My name is Pip, and I have been guarding this pond for fifty years, waiting for someone to bring that key," the squirrel replied, pointing its tiny paw at Rohan's pocket. "But be warned—the shadows are moving. The Shadow King has felt the key's magic, and his scouts are already in the woods. We must reach the Great Oak before the moon rises."

Rohan looked at Pip, then at the silver key. The reality of the situation finally hit him. He wasn't just a boy on a hike; he was being hunted by something dark.
