District 9 was a ghost town of rusted cranes and half-finished skyscrapers, a victim of the early dungeon outbreaks that had rendered the area "high-risk."
Kai stood before a reinforced steel door at the base of a skeletal apartment complex. He held the illegal "Gate Key"—a vibrating shard of violet crystal—against the lock. With a low hum, the air rippled, and a swirling vortex of energy tore open.
> [Entering Private Instance: The Bone-Yard]
> [Rank: D]
> [Condition: Solo Only]
Kai stepped through.
The transition no longer felt like being pulled through a needle; it felt like coming home. The air inside the dungeon was thick with mana, and for the first time, Kai didn't feel oppressed by it. He felt nourished.
The "Bone-Yard" was a labyrinth of twisted rebar and concrete. From the shadows, the sound of clicking mandibles echoed.
[Predator Instinct Activated]
Kai's vision shifted. The world turned a dull grey, but three bright red heat signatures pulsed behind a pile of debris fifty meters ahead. Scavenger Beetles. D-Rank monsters known for their impenetrable shells and bone-crushing pincers.
Old Kai would have run. New Kai gripped his pawn-shop dagger, and the blade hummed with a faint, dark mist.
The first beetle lunged, a half-ton mass of chitin and fury.
Kai didn't just dodge; he moved with a fluid, terrifying grace. His increased Agility made the beetle's charge look like it was moving through water. He pivoted, his dagger finding the narrow gap between the head and the thorax.
CRACK.
The blade sank in deep. Green ichor sprayed the concrete.
> [Target Killed]
> [Experience Gained]
The other two beetles shrieked and attacked simultaneously. Kai felt a surge of adrenaline, but beneath it, that familiar, cold hunger.
"Devour," he whispered.
Instead of the full-body explosion, the darkness concentrated into his shadow. It surged forward like a liquid whip, ensnaring the second beetle mid-air. The creature didn't stand a chance; it was crushed instantly, its mana pulled directly into Kai's feet.
Kai turned to the third beetle. He didn't even use his knife. He reached out and caught the creature's massive pincer with his bare hand. The metal-hard shell cracked under his grip.
"You're just... mana," Kai muttered, his eyes flickering with a dark violet light.
He slammed the beetle into the ground and let the Abyss consume it.
> [Level Up!]
> Level 4 → Level 5
> [Skill Evolution Detected: Shadow Storage (Rank: E)]
> [You can now store the essence of defeated foes. Current Capacity: 0/3]
Kai stood in the silence of the dungeon, his breath steady. He looked at his shadow. It seemed deeper now, more three-dimensional. He could feel something lingering there—the "echoes" of the beetles he had just destroyed.
"Storage..." Kai experimented, focusing his mind.
A notification appeared:
> [Would you like to extract 'Scavenger Beetle' as a Shadow Soldier?]
> [Success Rate: 40%]
Kai's heart hammered. He wasn't just a hunter anymore. He was becoming a one-man army. This was the key to A-Rank. He didn't need teammates who would betray him; he would build his own.
"Extract," he commanded.
The shadow at his feet began to bubble. A skeletal, translucent version of the beetle he had just killed rose slowly from the ground, its mandibles clicking in a ghostly rhythm. It bowed its head toward him.
Kai looked at his new servant, then deeper into the dark construction site. "Two more slots," he said, a predatory grin tugging at his lips. "Let's fill them."
