Chapter 26 - Chapter 26 - The Thing in the pit

The ash drifted slowly through the chamber.

Fragments of the shattered guardian settled across the stone floor like black snow, covering broken glass and twisted metal restraints. The smell of burned bone hung thick in the air.

For several seconds no one spoke.

The only sound came from the distant hum of the ancient machinery buried somewhere beneath the facility.

Kael stood at the center of the room.

His heart was still pounding.

The shadow wings that had erupted from his back moments earlier were gone now, dissolved into nothing as if they had never existed. But he could still feel them — phantom weight across his shoulders, like muscles that hadn't quite disappeared.

Across the chamber, Darius Vhal watched him.

The ancient vampire leaned casually against the cracked observation railing overlooking the pit below, his golden eyes fixed on Kael with an intensity that made Kael's skin crawl.

Not hostile.

Not impressed.

Interested.

Kael hated that look.

"You're staring," Malik said.

Darius didn't look away.

"Yes."

Malik sighed.

"Great. He admits it."

Elara stepped forward, solar blade still glowing faintly in her grip. The weapon hummed with residual energy from the convergence strike.

"You said something before the fight," she said.

Darius finally glanced at her.

"Did I?"

"You said you needed confirmation."

"I did."

Elara's blade lifted slightly.

"Confirmation of what?"

Darius gestured toward the floor where the guardian had disintegrated.

"That the prototype was obsolete."

Toren blinked.

"Obsolete?"

Nyxara crouched near the edge of the pit and nudged a chunk of bone armor with her boot. The piece tumbled into the darkness below and vanished with a distant clatter.

"You mean that thing was just a test?" she asked.

Darius nodded.

"A measuring instrument."

Malik stared at him.

"You used a ten-foot nightmare monster as a measuring stick."

"Yes."

Malik rubbed his face.

"I hate this man."

Kael stepped forward.

"You brought us here to test me."

Darius met his gaze again.

"Yes."

The calmness of the answer sent a surge of anger through Kael's chest.

"You risked everyone's lives."

"They survived."

"That's not the point."

Darius tilted his head slightly.

"It is exactly the point."

Elara moved instantly.

Her solar blade flashed forward, stopping inches from Darius's throat.

"Give me one reason," she said quietly, "not to end this now."

The ancient vampire didn't flinch.

Didn't even blink.

"You could try," he said.

Malik groaned.

"Oh fantastic. He's one of those."

Before Elara could press the blade closer, Sen spoke.

"Wait."

Everyone turned.

The archivist stood near the edge of the pit, staring down into the darkness with wide eyes.

His hands were shaking.

"That wasn't the only thing down there."

The words dropped into the silence like stones.

Kael felt the shift immediately.

Because he had felt it too.

Something deep in the pit had moved.

Darius noticed the change in the air.

For the first time since they'd met him, the ancient vampire looked uncertain.

"That," he said slowly, "should not be possible."

Below them—

Stone scraped.

A slow grinding sound echoed upward from the darkness.

Nyxara stepped back from the pit.

"That doesn't sound good."

Malik leaned over the edge.

"Well that's definitely not good."

"Do you see anything?" Toren asked.

"No."

"That's worse."

The pit was far deeper than it had appeared when they first entered the chamber. Emergency lights mounted along the walls barely illuminated the upper half before the darkness swallowed everything below.

Then another sound echoed upward.

A breath.

Slow.

Heavy.

Alive.

Sera raised her crossbow.

"Please tell me that's the building settling."

Sen shook his head.

"No."

Darius stepped closer to the pit.

His golden eyes narrowed as he peered into the darkness.

"That chamber was supposed to contain only one prototype."

Malik looked at him.

"You're the one who built this place."

"Not personally."

"That's not comforting."

The sound came again.

This time louder.

Something enormous shifted below.

Stone cracked.

Metal groaned.

And Kael felt the reaction instantly.

The Eclipse mark on his chest burned.

His breath caught.

Whatever was down there—

It knew he was here.

Elara noticed immediately.

"What is it?"

Kael stared into the darkness.

"It feels…"

He struggled for the right word.

"Familiar."

That word scared him more than anything.

Then two shapes moved in the shadows.

Slow.

Massive.

Eyes opened.

Not red like a vampire's.

Not gold like Darius's.

These burned a deep violet.

And they were enormous.

Toren whispered behind him.

"…I think we just found the next boss fight."

The creature below shifted again.

Chains snapped.

The sound echoed through the chamber like gunshots.

Stone crumbled.

Dust drifted upward.

And something enormous began climbing the wall of the pit.
