Leo Heart stood at the center of a runic circle, his breath hitching in his chest. At fifteen, he was lean, with the sharp features of his father and the kind, observant eyes of his mother.
"Don't be nervous, Leo," a booming, warm voice echoed through the hall.

"I'm not worried about the rank, Mom," Leo lied, his palms sweating. "I just want to be able to see them. Truly see them."
In this world, most people saw Battle Beasts as weapons. But Leo saw them as life. He had spent his childhood in the family stables, brushing the manes of Gale Horses and feeding Fire-Salamanders by hand.
"Ready, Little Bro?" his eldest brother, Arthur, called out. Arthur sat atop a massive, silver-armored Grizzly Bear—his primary contracted beast. "The Heart family bloodline usually leans toward Elementalism, but with your obsession with beasts, maybe you'll be the first S-Rank Tamer we've had in generations!"
Leo nodded, stepped forward, and placed his hand on the Awakening Monolith.
The stone was cold, then suddenly, it was white-hot.
