Chapter 80 - CH 80 Gambling Den

The casino smelled like smoke, spilled sake, and desperation.

Naruto scrunched his nose in discomfort. He couldn't understand how some adults stomached this stuff.

Tsunade sat at the center table, cards fanned in one hand, an empty cup at her elbow and a stack of chips that had clearly seen better decades. Shizune hovered behind her, wringing her hands like they owed her money too.

"One more round," Tsunade said.

"You said that four rounds ago," Shizune said.

"I mean it this time."

Naruto walked up before Jiraiya could stop him.

"Mind if I sit in?"

Tsunade glanced at him.

Blonde hair. Orange jacket. Leaf headband.

She smirked.

"A brat wants to lose his allowance. Sure, sit."

PING!

Naruto sat.

Jiraiya lingered near the door, arms crossed, watching with the particular stillness of a man who already knew how this was going to go and had decided not to warn anyone.

The dealer dealt.

Naruto looked at his hand.

Terrible.

He bet anyway.

Tsunade raised.

He called.

PING!

The Legendary Sucker — ACTIVE

Tsunade Senju has initiated voluntary gambling.

Gambling Penalty: -5 Luck

Naruto won the hand on a pair of twos against her three of a kind, because her three of a kind had somehow become a two of a kind by the time cards flipped, on account of Tsunade fumbling one card face-down into her own lap and not noticing.

She noticed after.

"That doesn't count."

"Dealer already called it."

"I said it doesn't count."

"Pay up, baa-chan."

The nickname landed like a slap. Shizune inhaled sharply. Somewhere behind them, a gambler quietly stood up and left the table entirely, sensing weather changing.

Tsunade paid.

Barely.

Then bet bigger.

Then lost bigger.

Then bet everything she had left in a hand that should have been unbeatable, except Naruto's card flipped a heartbeat before hers and the room went dead silent around the number involved.

Tsunade stared at the table.

At the empty space where her money used to be.

At the deed to a hot spring resort that had apparently been riding along as collateral for the last three hands and now sat, very much not hers, in front of a sixteen-year-old with whisker marks.

"Give it back," she said quietly.

"No refunds."

"I said—"

"You said no refunds isn't a thing you get to say when you're the one who lost."

The table around them had gone completely still.

Tsunade stood.

Her chair skidded backward hard enough to crack.

"Fine."

Her eyes weren't on the money anymore.

"You want to keep what you took from me? Fight me for it."

Naruto blinked.

"A what?"

"A fight."

Shizune's head snapped up.

"Tsunade-sama, no—"

"Everything you won. Everything I lost tonight. If you can land a single hit on me, it's yours. Every ryō, all of it. I'll even throw this necklace in for kicks."

Jiraiya's voice cut through the room. The 1st Hokage's necklace had no right being bet in an impromptu gambling death match.

"Tsunade."

"Stay out of this, Jiraiya."

"He's fourteen."

"He's the one who wanted to sit at my table."

Naruto's stomach did something complicated.

Excited.

Terrified.

Mostly excited.

Naruto grinned anyway.

"Deal."

"NARUTO." Shizune's voice cracked. "She can put a fist through a mountain. She is not exaggerating. Please, just give the money back and—"

"Too late," Naruto said. "Already agreed."

Jiraiya said nothing for a long moment.

Then, quietly, so only Naruto could hear it as they walked outside:

"Don't try to win."

Naruto looked at him.

"Try to survive with your dignity mostly intact. That's the win tonight."

"Thanks for the confidence, Pervy Sage."

"I have plenty of confidence. In her."

They found an open lot behind the casino district, cracked earth and a few dead trees, the kind of place a town keeps around for exactly this reason.

Word had already spread. A loose ring of onlookers gathered at a respectful distance, because everyone in Tanzaku Town had, at some point, heard a story about what happened to buildings that stood too close to an angry Tsunade Senju.

Tsunade rolled her shoulders.

Cracked her neck.

"Last chance to apologize and hand over my things."

"Last chance to admit you're just bad at cards."

Her eye twitched.

Naruto's hand drifted, unhurried, toward the anklet strapped beneath his sandal.

Toward the seal tags folded into his sleeve.

Toward the ground beneath his feet, which had a great deal more potential than it looked like it did.

"Ready when you are, baa-chan."

Tsunade didn't answer.

She simply moved.

The ground where Naruto had been standing erupted into a crater, dirt and stone thrown thirty feet in every direction, one casual finger having done what looked like it should have required an earthquake.

Naruto wasn't there anymore.

PING!

Flash Anklet — ACTIVATED

+20% Movement Speed for 60 seconds

Cooldown: 300 seconds

He'd cleared the blast radius before the dust finished rising, already circling wide, already thinking three steps ahead of where his feet currently were.

Tsunade turned unhurried, unbothered, the smile of someone who had all the time in the world.

"Fast. Cute."

"Thanks granny, just don't pinch my cheeks after this k?"

Her smile disappeared. She closed the distance in a way that shouldn't have been possible for someone her size moving that fast, fist already cocked, and Naruto barely got a substitution off in time. The log that took her punch didn't so much break as cease to exist as a concept.

Splinters rained down like confetti.

Naruto reappeared at the crater's edge, his legs aching as he pushed his agility to its limit.

"Okay," he muttered. "Okay. New plan."

His fingers moved.

Fast. Practiced. Advanced Fuinjutsu LVL 8 fast.

A tag struck the earth between them.

Barrier Seal — Partial Containment.

It wouldn't hold her. Nothing short of a small army would hold her. But it didn't need to hold her — it needed to buy a half-second of hesitation while a wall of compressed air rippled up from the seal's edge, distorting the space between them just enough to throw off her depth perception on the next strike.

Tsunade's fist met resistance that wasn't supposed to be there.

She adjusted mid-swing.

It cost her a fraction of a second.

Naruto used all of it.

Earth Release: Earthen Dominion.

The ground beneath her rear foot dropped six inches without warning, not enough to trip a normal shinobi, more than enough to disrupt a punch thrown with enough force to relocate a hillside. Her fist plowed into open air a hand's width off target, and the follow-through drove her forward off balance for the first time all night.

PING!

Earthen Dominion LVL 2 (14/20)

Naruto didn't celebrate.

He was already moving, already slapping a second tag onto a fractured slab of stone thrown up from her earlier punch, already thinking about angles and pressure points that mattered less than they should against someone who could probably survive falling off a mountain.

Gravity Seal — Localized Application.

He didn't have time to inscribe it onto her directly. He didn't need to. He anchored it into the debris field around her feet instead, a lattice of loose stone and broken earth suddenly several times heavier than it looked, shifting the footing under her with every step like the ground itself had decided to hold a grudge.

Tsunade's next punch came in slightly wrong-footed.

Slightly.

It was enough for the crater it created to be off-center from where Naruto had actually been standing a half-second earlier.

"You're stalling," she said, and for the first time there was something besides amusement in her voice.

"I'm winning," Naruto said, and grinned even though his legs were shaking.

She came at him again, faster this time, patience thinning, and Naruto realized with a cold drop in his stomach that the terrain tricks bought seconds, not the fight. Seconds weren't going to be enough against someone who hit like the end of the world.

He needed one more piece.

His hand found the last tag.

Chakra Suppression Seal.

He couldn't land it on her. He wasn't insane. But he could layer it onto the ring of debris along with a barrier seal. A crude, ugly containment net designed to do exactly one thing — thin the ambient chakra bleed off her strikes, dull the shockwave that usually came free with every punch she threw.

It wouldn't stop her fist.

It might stop what her fist did to everything within twenty feet of where it landed.

Tsunade swung.

Naruto didn't dodge this time.

He let the earth do it for him — dropped the ground beneath himself four feet down through a channel he'd carved and reinforced two exchanges earlier, an escape route disguised as rubble, and came up behind her at an angle no taijutsu master expects a genin-turned-chunin brat to have engineered on the fly.

Not a punch.

He didn't need a punch.

His palm, howling with wind in a compressed yet underpowered gale. Rail pierce would cause too much collateral damage even if blocked, so he decided for its little sister instead, his old tried and true gale pierce.

Tsunade grabbed the ball of wind before he could unleash it. The resulting chakra feedback launched him backwards, a backflip into a sliding crouch ensued.

Tsunade on the other hand had a slight blister on her palm, healing in an instant with medical chakra. Still injured slightly nonetheless.

Tsunade froze.

The whole clearing froze with her.

Naruto readied a kunai in a guarded stance. He had only served to poke a hornets nest but he was still proud of the relative success. A bead of sweat dripped down his brow in anticipation of her next move.

Slowly, Tsunade turned around.

Her expression wasn't fury.

It was something far more dangerous.

Calculation.

"You planned that," she said. "All of it. The seals. The ground. You weren't trying to fight me."

"Would've lost if I tried to fight you."

"So instead you turned the entire lot into a trap and walked me through it."

Naruto managed a shaky grin.

"Bingo...sorry...I know you like that game."

Behind her, Shizune had both hands pressed over her mouth. Jiraiya, at the edge of the ring, wore an expression Naruto had never seen on him before — somewhere between horror and open pride, the two apparently not mutually exclusive.

Tsunade looked down at her own palm.

Where a fourteen-year-old had just left a mark.

She looked back at him.

"You've got Uzumaki blood in you."

It wasn't a question.

"Yeah."

"That explains the seals. Doesn't explain the rest."

Naruto straightened, ignoring how badly his legs wanted to give out.

"Your necklace is mine then?"

Tsunade laughed.

It wasn't a kind laugh, exactly, but it wasn't cruel either — something closer to a woman remembering, briefly, that not everything always went the way she wanted.

In an instant Tsunade appeared in front of Naruto flicking him across the forehead. He was knocked out instantly, his question remaining unanswered.

Jiraiya finally stepped forward, slapping Naruto a few times across the cheek before his eyes fluttered open. Jiraiya would think that his student was still in a daze however Naruto was reading his newly won notifications.

"Not bad, brat."

"You said I'd lose."

"I said don't try to win. You didn't win. You just made losing structurally impossible for her. There's a difference."

Naruto opened his mouth to argue.

Then decided he was too tired to argue.

PING!

Konoha's Future Special Interaction Triggered!

Naruto stared at the notification.

Then dismissed it.

When he looked up, Tsunade was already walking away.

"Wait."

She didn't.

Naruto pushed himself upright.

"I said wait."

"I heard you."

"Then stop walking."

Tsunade finally turned.

"What?"

Naruto hesitated.

He'd spent the entire fight trying to impress her.

Show her the seals.

Show her his strength.

Prove that he wasn't some kid who needed to be protected from his own ambitions.

None of it actually mattered.

Because Naruto suddenly remembered why they were here.

The hospital room.

Hiruzen struggling to breathe, poison coursing through his veins.

A trembling hand against Naruto's back.

You'll make a fine Hokage one day.

Naruto's expression changed.

"Why won't you come back?"

Tsunade's eyes narrowed.

"I already told you."

"No. You told us you don't want to be Hokage."

"Same thing."

"No, it isn't."

Tsunade's irritation returned.

"Konoha has plenty of people capable of filling a position."

"It's not just a position."

Tsunade laughed bitterly.

"Don't tell me you're still spouting that Will of Fire nonsense."

Naruto's fists tightened, his face twisted in righteous fury.

Jiraiya became very still.

Tsunade noticed.

Naruto stared at her.

"The old man died for it."

Silence.

"He protected the whole village from your maniac former teammate."

Tsunade's expression hardened.

"Naruto—"

"He knew he was dying."

Naruto's voice cracked slightly.

He hated that.

He continued anyway.

"He knew there was poison in him. He knew everybody was trying to save him. And when he finally woke up, you know what he did?"

Tsunade didn't answer.

"He asked for me."

Naruto swallowed.

"He didn't complain. Didn't ask why it happened to him. Didn't talk about everything he'd done for the village."

His eyes burned, looking down his next words came out choked.

"He promoted me."

Jiraiya looked away.

"He apologized to me for things that happened before I was even born. Told me about my mom. Told me about my clan."

Naruto's voice became quieter.

"Then he asked me to protect Konoha."

Tsunade's eyes shifted.

"And then he died."

Nobody spoke.

Naruto wiped angrily at his eyes.

"So don't call what he believed in nonsense."

Tsunade's jaw tightened.

"You think Hiruzen was the only person I've watched die?"

Naruto stopped.

"You think you're the first child to lose someone?"

Her voice sharpened.

"I've watched everyone I love die while trying to protect the village."

Naruto said nothing

Jiraiya and Shizune lowered their heads.

Tsunade raised both of her pristine hands and muttered, "I've seen things you can't imagine kid."

Tsunade stepped toward Naruto.

"You know nothing about what I've sacrificed."

Naruto didn't retreat.

"You know nothing about how many people this village has taken from me."

Her finger pressed against his chest.

"So don't stand there and lecture me about sacrifice because you lost one old man."

Jiraiya's expression hardened.

"Tsunade."

Naruto grasped Tsuande's wrist in a flash, his eyes burning into hers.

Naruto took a breath.

His grasp slowly loosened.

He glanced toward Shizune.

"I didn't know the people you loved."

Naruto looked back at Tsunade.

"So I'm not gonna stand here and pretend I understand what losing them did to you."

Tsunade stared at him.

"But you don't understand what losing the old man did to me either."

Neither moved.

"So maybe we're both full of shit."

Jiraiya's eyebrows rose.

Shizune made a tiny choking noise.

Tsunade stared at Naruto.

Then—

Against her will—

A tiny laugh escaped.

Naruto didn't smile.

"The difference is I'm going back. I'm not running away. Because that's my ninja way!"

Tsunade's lower lip trembled for an instant. Her composure remained intact. She wiped dust off her sleeve, glanced once more at the crater field that used to be a vacant lot, and exhaled.

Shizune scrambled after her, throwing one last disbelieving glance back at the boy who'd just emotionally stomped a sannin.

Naruto watched them go.

Then finally let his legs give out, sitting down hard in the middle of the crater he'd help design. A growing concussion mounting from the sannin's forehead flick.
