They left the clearing without another word.
The forest swallowed them quickly.
Not in a threatening way.
In a deliberate one.
Like the trees were simply resuming a position they'd been holding all along.
Waiting.
Watching.
Then pretending nothing had happened.
Mayson walked slightly behind Lucien and Adrian.
Not because he needed to.
Because he wanted spacing.
Distance gave him clarity.
Clarity gave him control.
Control gave him options.
Adrian glanced back once.
"You always walk like that?"
Mayson didn't look up.
"Like what?"
"Like you're measuring the ground."
"I am."
Lucien let out a short laugh.
"That's actually worse."
They followed the trail down toward the road.
The sounds of the town began to return slowly.
Faint at first.
Then louder.
Then unavoidable.
Cars.
Distant voices.
Life pretending it wasn't surrounded by something older.
Lucien slowed slightly as they reached the edge of the trees.
"This is where we split."
Adrian frowned.
"No it's not."
"It is for now."
Mayson stopped.
His gaze moved between them.
"You're leaving me here?"
Lucien shook his head.
"No."
A pause.
"We're leaving you here with information."
Adrian muttered.
"That sounds irresponsible."
Lucien ignored him.
Mayson crossed his arms.
"Information about what exactly?"
Lucien studied him for a moment.
Then spoke.
"Where the movement is strongest right now."
That was vague again.
But less useless than before.
Adrian added, reluctantly.
"And where it isn't safe to linger too long."
Mayson raised an eyebrow.
"So everywhere?"
Lucien smiled faintly.
"Now you're learning."
A car passed in the distance.
Normal.
Ordinary.
Completely unaware of anything happening beyond the trees.
Mayson exhaled slowly.
"You said factions are converging."
Lucien nodded.
"Yes."
"And I'm a marker."
"Yes."
"So I should assume people will start approaching me directly."
Lucien didn't deny it.
That was answer enough.
Adrian sighed.
"I hate when he's right."
Lucien nodded.
"So do I."
Mayson looked down the road.
Back toward town.
Back toward Broken Falls High.
Back toward everything pretending to be normal.
Then he asked the next question.
"Lily—does she factor into any of this?"
The question landed differently.
Lucien blinked.
Adrian immediately looked at him.
"…what?"
Lucien asked.
Mayson kept his gaze forward.
"She's around me often."
A pause.
"That creates patterns."
Adrian frowned.
"Are you seriously analyzing her like a variable right now?"
"Yes."
Lucien held up a hand.
"Careful."
Mayson finally looked at him.
"I am."
Lucien studied him for a moment.
Then spoke more carefully.
"No one has mentioned her."
"That's not an answer."
"It is the only one I have."
Silence.
Mayson accepted that without visible reaction.
But internally, he logged it anyway.
Not a target.
Not a known variable.
Which meant unpredictable.
Adrian crossed his arms.
"Look, if you're worried about people watching you through her—"
"I'm not worried," Mayson interrupted.
A pause.
"I'm accounting for risk."
Lucien nodded slowly.
"That's better phrasing."
Adrian rolled his eyes.
"It's the same thing."
"No," Lucien said. "It isn't."
A brief silence followed.
Then Lucien stepped slightly closer.
His tone lowered.
"Listen carefully."
Mayson met his gaze.
"You're going to start noticing gaps."
Lucien continued.
"People you don't recognize."
"Movements that don't fit."
"Conversations that stop when you arrive."
Adrian added quietly.
"And when that happens, don't assume it's paranoia."
Mayson nodded once.
"I don't assume anything."
Lucien smiled faintly.
"That's not comforting."
The wind shifted again.
This time it carried the scent of the town more clearly.
Food.
Smoke.
Humans.
Normal life layered over something not normal at all.
Lucien stepped back.
"We're done for now."
Adrian sighed.
"Finally."
Mayson looked between them.
"You're not staying in town?"
Lucien shook his head.
"Not openly."
A pause.
"But we'll be watching."
Adrian added.
"Whether you like it or not."
Mayson didn't respond to that.
He simply nodded once.
Not agreement.
Acknowledgment.
Lucien turned slightly.
"One more thing."
Mayson looked at him.
"If someone approaches you directly—Factions, Archives, anyone—don't commit immediately."
A pause.
"Observe first."
Adrian snorted.
"As if he doesn't already do that."
Lucien ignored him.
"Just don't forget it."
Mayson nodded again.
"I won't."
Then Lucien stepped back fully into the shadows of the trees.
Adrian followed.
But hesitated briefly.
He looked at Mayson.
"You're going to make this worse before it gets better."
Mayson raised an eyebrow.
"That's subjective."
Adrian sighed.
"It's not."
Then he left.
And just like that—
they were gone.
The forest felt lighter.
Not safer.
Just emptier.
Mayson stood alone at the edge of the road.
Watching the direction they left.
Thinking.
Not about fear.
Not about danger.
About structure.
About movement.
About what had just been confirmed.
Factions converging.
Archives breached.
Winchester records targeted.
And a timeline that kept circling back to him.
He exhaled once.
Slow.
Controlled.
Then turned toward town.
Broken Falls looked the same as it always had.
That was the problem.
It shouldn't.
As he walked, his thoughts sharpened into something cleaner.
Not emotion.
Not confusion.
Just planning.
If people were converging…
Then hiding wasn't enough.
And reacting wasn't enough either.
He needed positioning.
Leverage.
Awareness.
And above all—
he needed to know what existed at the center of all of this before someone else reached it first.
Mayson slipped his hands into his pockets and kept walking.
The town ahead didn't feel normal anymore.
It felt staged.
Like everyone was acting out parts in a play no one had fully explained.
