Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The Claim I Did Not Expect

Aurelia's grip on the man's hand was tight, her knuckles white, but the forest around them was darker and more dangerous than ever. The howls grew louder, echoing off the trees, and shadows moved with unnatural speed. Her pulse raced so fast she thought her chest would explode.

"Stay behind me," he ordered. His golden eyes scanned every corner of the clearing, every flicker of movement, every hint of danger.

"I… I can't believe this," she whispered. "All of this… it's real?"

His gaze remained steady, unyielding. "You will understand soon enough. Focus on surviving right now."

Aurelia's stomach twisted. Surviving meant following him blindly, stepping into the unknown. But she did not dare question him again. Not with those eyes. Not with the pack closing in.

The first shadow emerged from the tree line. Its eyes glowed a deep crimson. Its snarl was low, guttural, and filled with hunger. More shapes appeared behind it, at least half a dozen. Their movements were synchronized, almost predatory, like a single mind controlling many bodies.

Aurelia's breath caught. "They… they won't stop?"

"They will not," he said calmly, his body coiled and ready. "But neither will I."

The red-eyed wolf from the previous night stepped forward. Its gaze locked onto Aurelia. She froze. It had remembered her. Its teeth bared, its claws scraping the dirt.

The man moved like lightning, placing himself between her and the wolf. He let out a growl, low and dangerous, and the wolf froze. Its ears twitched. Its eyes glowed brighter, but it did not move closer.

"You belong to me," he said quietly, almost to himself. Then he looked at her. "Do you understand what that means?"

"I… no," Aurelia admitted. Her voice shook. "I do not understand anything. I just want to survive."

"That is a start," he said. Then his head snapped toward the approaching pack. "We do not have much time. Hold on."

Before she could react, the pack attacked. The air exploded with motion. Wolves lunged from the shadows, their claws and teeth aimed for him. He moved like a shadow himself, dodging, striking, and sending attackers sprawling. Each movement was precise, fluid, and deadly.

Aurelia stumbled backward, barely avoiding the claws that tore the earth beside her. She wanted to scream, but the sound died in her throat. Every second was filled with terror, adrenaline, and awe.

The man caught her wrist and pulled her closer. "Do not move," he commanded. "If you stay still, you might survive."

The pack howled in frustration, their coordination broken for a moment. One of the wolves, younger and smaller, leapt toward her. She froze, eyes wide. The man intercepted it with a swipe of his arm, knocking it into the trees.

Aurelia gasped, her heart hammering. She had never seen power like this before. He was faster, stronger, and completely fearless. And the way he protected her… she did not understand it, yet it made her chest ache in a way she had never felt.

Another wolf lunged at him from behind. The man spun, using the momentum to strike it with the side of his hand. It yelped and retreated, but the damage was immediate. Blood glinted on the grass.

Aurelia's stomach turned. She did not want to look, but she could not look away. He moved like the forest itself was his ally. Every motion precise, every strike fatal.

Then he stopped.

The wolves hesitated. One of them, the leader of the returning pack, stepped forward, snarling. Its eyes were dark, almost black, filled with intelligence and rage. Aurelia's body froze. She could feel the tension radiating off him.

"They recognize you," she whispered.

"Yes," he said quietly. "And they know you are mine. That is why they are here. They want to challenge it. To test the bond."

Aurelia's eyes widened. "Bond? What bond?"

He did not answer immediately. His gaze stayed locked on the pack. "The bond between mate and Alpha is stronger than anything. They will never understand it, but they can feel it. That is why they attack."

Her chest tightened. She did not understand. She did not want to understand. All she wanted was to survive.

The largest wolf stepped forward again, growling low. It circled him, teeth bared. His eyes narrowed, muscles coiling. Aurelia could feel the danger in the air. She pressed herself against the rock behind her, heart hammering in terror and anticipation.

The Alpha raised his hand, and the air seemed to hum around them. The wolves paused, ears flat, eyes glowing with fear and confusion. Aurelia shivered.

"You will not touch her," he growled. The sound vibrated through her chest. "I swear it."

The red-eyed wolf lunged, faster than she thought possible. The man moved, grabbing it by the shoulders and throwing it into the trees. The impact echoed through the forest.

Another wolf attacked from the side. He spun, striking it with a force that sent it flying. Blood glinted on the leaves. Aurelia's stomach churned, but she could not stop staring.

Then something unexpected happened.

The man's eyes flicked to her. His gaze softened slightly, and he said, "Do you feel it? The connection between us?"

Aurelia's breath caught. She did not know what he meant. "I… I feel… something," she admitted, her voice trembling. "But I am terrified."

"That is natural," he said. "Fear is part of survival. But soon, you will understand. Soon, you will see why you are mine and why no one can take you."

The forest erupted with sound again. The pack had regrouped, and this time there were more than she could count. They were coming fast, teeth glinting, eyes glowing red and yellow.

"Hold onto me," he said, stepping closer. "And do not let go."

Aurelia obeyed without hesitation. Her hands gripped his arm tightly. Her pulse was a storm of fear, excitement, and something she could not name.

The first wave of wolves crashed into him. Aurelia could hear snarls, growls, and the impact of bodies colliding with incredible force. The man moved like lightning, dodging, striking, and throwing attackers back. Blood and leaves flew through the air, painting the ground in chaos.

Aurelia wanted to scream, but she had no voice. All she could do was hold on.

The pack leader stepped forward, larger and more terrifying than the rest. Its eyes glowed dark red, and its lips curled back, revealing sharp fangs. It charged.

The man braced, eyes narrowing. "Do not let go," he warned again.

Aurelia's fingers dug into his arm as he intercepted the creature. Their collision shook the clearing. The force sent her sprawling slightly, but he held her close.

Then he whispered into her ear. "No one will harm you. Not tonight. Not ever."

Aurelia's chest tightened. She wanted to believe him, but fear clawed at her. The pack was relentless. And yet, standing beside him, she felt something else—safety, power, and an undeniable pull toward him that terrified her more than the wolves ever could.

The forest fell silent for a heartbeat. The pack leader staggered back, snarling. The other wolves paused, watching.

The man's golden eyes glowed brighter. "This is only the beginning," he said. His voice was low, dangerous, but filled with certainty.

Aurelia swallowed hard. "The beginning… of what?"

Before he could answer, a deafening howl echoed from deeper in the forest. It was louder, sharper, and angrier than anything they had faced so far.

Aurelia's blood ran cold.

He turned his gaze toward the sound. "They are coming. Much more than we expected."

Her stomach dropped. "What do we do?"

He did not answer immediately. His eyes locked onto hers. Then he spoke with a calm that belied the danger surrounding them. "We survive. Together."

A shadow detached itself from the treeline. Its eyes burned like fire. Its movements were faster than any wolf she had seen. The pack was returning, stronger and hungrier than before.

The man stepped in front of her, muscles coiled, golden eyes blazing. "Hold on," he whispered. "Do not let go. You will need all your strength tonight."

Aurelia's hands tightened around his arm. She had no idea what was coming. But one thing was certain. She could not run. Not now. Not ever.

The pack charged.

And the night exploded into chaos once more.
