5- THE HIDDEN BASEMENT

Naina and Aarav stood silently in the dark hallway of the old science building. The photograph still trembled slightly in Naina's hands. Anika's smiling face stared back at them, frozen in a moment from the past. But the words written on the back of the photo kept echoing in Naina's mind.

She wasn't supposed to know.

Aarav looked toward the door where Mr. Khanna was still inside the room. The faint yellow light under the door proved he hadn't left yet.

"We should go," Aarav whispered nervously. "If he finds us here, we'll be in serious trouble."

Naina nodded slowly, but something inside her refused to leave so easily. Every clue they had found was leading deeper into this building. First the notebook. Then the message about the old science building. Now the photograph of Anika standing right here with Mr. Khanna.

"This place is important," Naina said quietly. "I can feel it."

Aarav sighed. "You always say that right before something bad happens."

Despite the tension, Naina gave a small smile.

"Just five minutes," she said. "Then we leave."

Aarav reluctantly agreed.

They carefully moved away from the hallway and walked deeper into the abandoned building. The further they went, the darker the corridors became. Dust covered the floor, and old classroom doors stood half open like silent watchers.

Then Naina noticed something strange.

At the end of another corridor there was a staircase leading downward.

"That wasn't in the main building layout," Aarav said quietly.

The staircase was narrow and old, leading into complete darkness below.

Naina turned on the flashlight on her phone.

"We check quickly," she whispered.

Step by step, they walked down the staircase.

The air grew colder as they went deeper underground. The walls were rough concrete, and the smell of dampness filled the air.

At the bottom of the stairs was a small metal door.

It was slightly open.

Naina pushed it gently.

The door creaked loudly as it opened, revealing a small basement room.

The beam of Naina's flashlight moved across the space.

Old lab tables stood in the corner. Broken chairs were stacked against the wall. But in the middle of the room there was something else.

A large wooden cabinet.

It looked newer than everything else around it.

Aarav stepped closer.

"Why would someone keep a cabinet in a basement like this?"

Naina slowly opened the cabinet door.

Inside were several files.

Stacks of papers.

And more photographs.

They began looking through them quickly.

Most of the files contained student records from last year.

But suddenly Aarav froze.

"Naina… look at this."

He held up a document.

At the top of the page was Anika's name again.

But this time it wasn't a school record.

It looked like a report.

Under the name were several lines written in red ink.

Student witnessed something in the science lab.

Student began asking questions.

Risk of exposure increasing.

Naina felt her throat go dry.

"This doesn't make sense," she whispered. "What did she see?"

Aarav turned another page.

His face slowly turned pale.

"What?" Naina asked.

Aarav silently handed her the paper.

It was a photograph taken inside a laboratory.

But the lab looked strange.

Dark.

And hidden.

Standing in the photo were three adults wearing lab coats.

One of them was clearly Mr. Khanna.

Another was the school principal.

And beside them stood a man Naina had never seen before.

But the most shocking part of the picture was what they were standing next to.

A locked metal container with a warning symbol on it.

Under the photograph someone had written a chilling note.

Anika saw the experiment.

She wasn't supposed to.

For a moment the basement felt unbearably silent.

Then suddenly a loud sound echoed from upstairs.

Footsteps.

Heavy footsteps moving across the floor above them.

Naina and Aarav looked at each other in fear.

Someone had entered the building.

And judging by the slow, searching footsteps…

They were looking for something.

Or someone.
