The system map hovered in the air, a neon web of shifting borders and flashing threat indicators. Sector 17-B's brilliant blue grid sat locked beside Arjun's primary home node, but beyond their immediate perimeter, the regional map was a chaotic sea of motion.

[Multiple Faction Signals Detected: Sector 12-A, Grid 09, Sector 18-F]
[Neutral Sector Buffers Dissolving…]
Arjun rolled his right shoulder. The motion sent a sharp flare of heat through his collarbone, where his suit's internal lining had melted into the under-layer.

[Critical Alert: Primary Shield Generator Burned Out]
"Arjun!" Maya hit the perimeter line first, her boots sliding through the fine grey ash left behind by the Guardian's implosion. She stopped short, her eyes scanning the charred landscape, the ruined core structure, and finally Arjun's smoke-stained frame. "The environmental suppression field—it vanished. The whole zone just... unlocked."
Marcus followed a second later, rifle raised in a low ready position, his eyes cutting back and forth across the ridge line. "It didn't just unlock. The entire northern sector map went live. My HUD is pinging three separate faction signatures moving through the neutral corridors."
"They felt the pulse," Arjun said. He didn't turn around. He kept his eyes locked on the tactical display, watching three distinct crimson and yellow markers push hard against the unclaimed sectors to the north. "When the Core Guardian died, the sector's static interference dropped. Every faction within twenty kilometers knows 17-B has been claimed."
"We can't hold this," Marcus said bluntly, stepping up beside him. "Look at your suit, Arjun. You're operating on a prayer and seven percent hull integrity. If a secondary strike team pushes over that ridge right now—"
"They won't," Arjun interrupted.
He tapped his wrist interface, bringing up his fresh rewards.
[Spending Combat Points: 2,000 / 2,000]
[Allocating to: Sector 17-B Automated Network]
[Deploying: Tier 1 Tactical Barricades & Sector Sensor Grid]
The ground beneath their feet hummed. Deep within the bedrock of Sector 17-B, system fabricators activated. Blue light traced the cracks in the asphalt, sealing major fissures and raising thick, reinforced alloy bulkheads along the northern access roads. Automated sensor pylons surged up from the rubble, their optic lenses sweeping the horizon.
Marcus took a step back as a barrier locked into place five feet ahead of him. "You just dumped every point you earned into passive defenses?"
"We need time," Arjun said. He finally turned, his visor retracting to reveal cold, focused eyes. "17-B connects the lower ruins to the high-tier supply vaults in the north. Anyone who wants to control this cluster has to pass through us. I'm not giving them an open road."
Maya pulled up her tactical terminal, syncing her system with 17-B's newly deployed sensor grid. A series of long-range telemetry pings immediately flickered onto her screen. Her face went pale.
"Arjun... we have a problem." She zoomed in on a heavy cluster of signatures advancing down the main highway from Sector 12-A. "It's not just scout units. That's a mechanized vanguard. Faction tag: The Iron Covenant."
Marcus swore under his breath. "They were waiting for someone else to do the heavy lifting. They let you burn your ammo and suit integrity on the Guardian, and now they're moving in to sweep the zone."
Arjun checked his rifle's plasma reservoir. Empty. He detached the overheated cell, letting it drop into the ash with a sharp hiss, and slotted his final fresh clip into the receiver.
"Let them come," Arjun said, the blue glow of the new territory reflecting in his eyes. "They think they're walking into a graveyard."
He leveled his rifle toward the northern highway.
"They're walking into a war."
