Chapter 5 - *ECHOCRISIS — CHAPTER 5: “Hell Unrisen”**

*ECHOCRISIS — CHAPTER 5: "Hell Unrisen"**

**(SCENE - INSIDE THE SCAR, ENTRANCE SQUARE)**

As the door closed behind him, the air inside **was no different from the outside—only thicker.** The heavy stench of corpses, blood, sweat, filth, and **echoing violence**. The sounds, however... were nothing but **human screams**, victory cries, the moans of the defeated, the jingle of coins, and **a constant metallic hum.**

This place was like an **unascended hell.** Or rather, **the legalized, organized version of the savagery outside.** The same death, the same decay, but here **there were rules:** The strong win. That's all.

The team stepped inside.

**And the moment they did—**

**FROM THEIR LEFT, 10 meters above,** **CRACK!** a **long, massive, double-bladed axe** plunged into the ground! It had enough force to **crack** the stone floor. Then, **a massive, bald-headed man nearly 6 meters tall** leaped down from the same height. The ground **shuddered** under his weight.

In the man's **left hand** was an axe of the same type as the one embedded in the ground, but larger, with a **red handle**. With his right hand, he pulled the axe that had been driven into the ground out. There was **fresh blood** on it.

Kai's eyes **lit up instantly.** He saw not danger, but **opportunity**. The man's movements were measured and controlled. He was no ordinary vagrant.

The bald man lifted his axe and hoisted it onto his shoulder. A **fresh, young woman's corpse** was still impaled on the blade's tip. He gave his shoulder a shake and **flung** the body to the side, onto a pile of trash. His work was done.

Seiryū's hand had gone to the hilt of his katana; his eyes were fixed on the platforms above.

> **SEIRYŪ (quietly, but clearly)**

> That was the one watching us.

The bald man heard these words. He turned his massive head toward them. His face was **covered in scars**, but his eyes were **surprisingly clear.** Despite having just emerged from a clash, his breathing wasn't even rapid. **He was a professional.**

> **BALD MAN (a loud, deep voice)**

> Hey, hey. Calm down, cool kid. Are you new here? If you stand on guard like that... you'll draw **even more** attention.

His eyes scanned each of the four in turn: Kai's hat and posture, Shizuren's hood and scowling face, Seiryū's mask and katana, Ryon's rifle and tattoos.

> **BALD MAN (continuing, with a faint smirk on his lips)**

> You... you were the ones looking for the guild, weren't you? I watched your **flashy entrance** at the door. The echo hologram... stylish. But here, it's not about **show**, it's about **results**.

Kai took a step forward. His eyes, hidden under the shadow of his hat, locked onto the man's.

> **KAI**

> So... we walked right in. And you just **watched** us. You didn't attack. So you must have a **reason**.

The bald man's smirk widened. **A few gold teeth** glinted.

> **BALD MAN**

> Smart. My name is **Brog.** Most people call me **"Hammerhead."** I'm the **recruiter** for the Adventurers' Guild... and quality control.

He gave the bloodstained axe in his hand a light shake.

> **BROG**

> That woman... **was subpar.** Her resonance was weak. She had no discipline. The Adventure Guild doesn't want **trash**. So... **I got rid of her.** To make room.

Shizuren's eyes sparkled. She seemed to like **Brog's** style.

> **BROG (continued)**

> As for the four of you... **you're interesting.** You fled Vireholm. You angered the Ivory Wardens. And you came here, **nameless**. Either you're very **stupid.** Or... **very brave.**

Kai answered without hesitation:

> **KAI**

> The second one. And we're not nameless anymore. **Ashen Covenant.**

Brog raised his eyebrows upon hearing that name. **It sounded familiar.**

> **BROG**

> The Ashen Covenant... Interesting. An old name. **Very** old. Where did you find it?

Kai hadn't expected this question. They had **made up the name themselves.** Or was it...

> **RYON (suddenly)**

> Data inconsistency. The name is original. No historical records. But there's a recognition response. Explanation?

Brog looked at Ryon and burst into a loud laugh.

> **BROG**

> You're funny! But the answer to your question is simple. **Every name carries an echo.** The word "Ashen"… it echoed in this pit **before.** A long time ago. Maybe **your arrival** reawakened that echo.

Brog slammed his axe into the ground. **Thud!**

> **BROG (seriously)**

> Anyway, the past is the past. Now, it's **time for business**. The Adventure Guild is looking for new blood. **Strong** blood. We have a **test**. If you accept it and pass... you'll earn entry into the guild. And your first **reward.**

Kai looked at his team. He asked with his eyes: *"What do you say?"*

Shizuren shrugged, "**If there's a fight, I'm in.**" Seiryū nodded in agreement. Ryon muttered, "**I'd like to know the test parameters,**"

Kai turned to Brog.

> **KAI**

> What is the test?

Brog's eyes **sparkled.** He pointed his hand toward the depths of the arena, **even further down, to the seemingly bottomless layers of the pit**.

> **BROG**

> Down there... there's the **"Echo-Gorge."** An abandoned echo mine. Inside, there's the echo signature of a **missing guild member.** Find him, bring him back. Simple.

Then, grinning, he added:

> **BROG**

> But be careful. There isn't **just** a missing guild member there. The mine... **is alive.** And hungry

Kai's words hung in the air. The huge, gold-toothed grin on Brog's face **vanished instantly.** It was replaced by **an icy, measured seriousness.** The playful expression in his eyes turned into the sharp gaze of **a seasoned killer.**

> **BROG (his voice dropping an octave)**

> Listen, kid.

This time, the word "kid" wasn't a nickname—it was **an insult, a warning.**

> **BROG (continuing)**

> There is no **guild** here that you're looking for. There is no romance here, no brotherhood, no **honorable fight**. There are only two things here: **Blood.** And **Reward.**

He held out his massive hand, spreading two fingers:

> **BROG**

> **One:** You go to the mine. You find the lost echo. You bring it back. You take your reward. **Maybe** you'll join our guild.

> **Two...**

He slowly lowered the massive, red-handled axe on his shoulder. The blade's tip came **right at Kai's chest level**. Fresh blood was still dripping from it.

> **BROG**

> ...Or get the hell out.** Get out the door, go back to that filthy pit, and don't ever** think about setting foot in The Scar's inner layers again.

The other voices in the square had noticed the confrontation. All around, **shadows paused.** From cave entrances and balconies, spectators emerged. Were they going to bet, or were they just there for the show? It wasn't clear.

Kai looked at the tip of the axe, then into Brog's eyes. He didn't back down. His voice was **calm, but taut as a steel wire:**

> **KAI**

> Alright.

Brog's eyebrows raised slightly. He hadn't expected that.

> **KAI (continued)**

> We're going to the mine. But...

Kai's left hand moved to the hilt of the **ancient sword Mira had given him** at his waist. He didn't touch it; he just rested his hand there.

> **KAI**

> ...we'll also ask you the price of turning that axe **on me**. After the job is done.

A **murmur** rippled through the square. These newcomers were **challenging** Hammerhead Brog!

Brog's lips curled up slowly once more. But this time, the smile was **more savage, more respectful.** He slowly pulled his axe back and slung it over his shoulder again.

> **BROG**

> There you go! **A little courage!** I'm pleased. Because in Echo-Gorge, cowards die **in the first minute.**

He turned around and began walking toward the **iron cage elevator** at the edge of the square. He waved his hand in the air, signaling them to follow.

> **BROG (over his shoulder)**

> Come on! Don't waste time! The mine is **starving,** and you don't want to be its **next meal**!

The Ashen Covenant exchanged glances for a moment. Shizuren's eyes were **shining.** Seiryū's hand rested on his katana. Ryon watched Brog with a **scrutinizing** gaze.

Kai nodded. **They followed.**

The iron cage elevator began **creaking** as it descended into the **depths of the pit,** into the darkness, the steam, and the unknown.

And up above, in the square, the bets had already begun:

*"Hammerhead's new prey! I'll bet they won't last more than 10 minutes!"*

*"No, that masked one looks dangerous..."*

**As the voices faded away above, the elevator descended deeper still, toward the mouth of Echo-Gorge.**

**THE SCENE FADES TO BLACK.**

**(SCENE - ECHO-GORGE ENTRANCE, MINE MUTH)**

The entrance to Echo-Gorge was **literally teeming with corpses.** Dozens, perhaps hundreds of bodies—stuck to the walls, scattered across the floor, blocking the clogged passages. The corpses were fresh, rotting, mummified... all mixed together. The air was thick with that **intense, suffocating, sweet-smelling stench of decaying flesh**. It stung the eyes and burned the throat.

**Shizuren** was **going mad** from this smell. But not out of anger—**out of some kind of sickening pleasure.** His eyes had widened, his breathing quickened. He lifted his nose into the air and took a deep breath, as if smelling **a beautiful perfume**.

> **SHIZUREN (gasping)**

> Ahhh... **This.** This is the real thing.

**Ryon** had already drawn his rifle and rested it on his shoulder. His eyes were **scanning** the depths of the dark mine tunnels, searching for infrared or reflective movements. His fingers were on the trigger.

**Kai,** scanning his surroundings with his eyes, picked up a **dry, cracked piece of tree root** from the ground. He held it in his left hand. **His left eye (Nethra) instantly glowed like a greenish flame.** The gaze of his eye and the **burning of the tree root in his hand became one.** But the flame was not ordinary; **it was a silent, smokeless, ghostly green flame.** The flame burned like a torch with **an echo of death**, illuminating the darkness with **a chilling green light**.

> **KAI**

> It serves as light. And... perhaps more. Let's go.

In the flickering light of the green flame, they began to move through the **sea of corpses**. Seiryū had **removed his mask.** For the first time, he revealed his full face: sharp, noble features, **the continuation of a dragon tattoo on his left cheek**, and ice-blue eyes. His hand was always on the hilt of his katana.

As they moved forward, the tunnel suddenly widened, opening into a massive **mine entrance hall**. This area was cleaner, but the walls bore **scratch marks** and dried bloodstains.

**Just then, a familiar voice was heard from above.** **Brog.** The voice came from the mouth of the cave, **where the iron elevator was**, laughing and echoing:

> **BROG (echoing voice)**

> Hey, **hat-wearing guy!** A little lesson! This is **Scar!** You can't trust **anyone** here! Not even the recruiter! Especially the recruiter!

**And then— CRASH-CRANG!**

From above, a **massive iron cage door** suddenly fell and **sealed off** the mine entrance! The noise was deafening, and a cloud of dust engulfed everything. The exit was cut off.

Brog's voice, from behind the door, sounded **official and commanding** this time:

> **BROG**

> **Hey, Adventure Guild guards!** If these scum try to escape **through this door**... **kill them.** The test is **success or death.** That's all.

Then, Brog's laughter and the sound of receding footsteps were heard. They were left alone. Trapped.

In the light of the green flame, four faces glowed with **tension and rage**. Shizuren took a step toward the door, her hands beginning to glow with corrupted energy.

> **SHIZUREN**

> I'll **melt that filth.** The door, the wall, everything...

> **KAI (sharp)**

> **Stop.**

Everyone looked at him. Kai's face was **as hard as stone.**

> **KAI (continued)**

> This is a test. A **real** test. If Brog wanted to kill us, he would have done it up there. There's a purpose to this. He's not testing us with **death**. He's testing us with **ourselves**.

Ryon lowered his rifle; logic began to kick in.

> **RYON**

| Makes sense. The mission parameters have changed. But the objective remains the same: "Find the lost echo." The exit is sealed, which means we need to look for an **alternative exit**. Probably at the **other end of the mine.**

Seiryū drew his katana slightly. The sound of steel rang out in the deathly silence.

> **SEIRYŪ**

> Then... we're moving forward. And we'll save this **Brog** for later.

Kai extended his green-flamed torch forward. The light stretched into the **depths of the tunnel,** toward the unknown darkness.

> **KAI**

> Yes. Let's go. The mine is **open.** And we... will be its **hunters, not the hunted.**

Four silhouettes began moving toward the depths of **Echo-Gorge** in the eerie glow of the green flame. Behind them lay the closed iron gate and Brog's betrayal. Ahead lay **a lost echo, a living mine, and perhaps the Ashen Covenant's first true victory—or its grave.**

**THE SCENE FADES TO BLACK AS THEY MOVE TOWARD THE DARK TUNNEL.**

**(SCENE - THE DEPTHS OF ECHO-GORGE)**

Their progress was slow, tense, and nerve-wracking. The eerie glow of the green flame illuminated the **strange, almost organic-looking mineral veins** on the tunnel walls. Bodies were everywhere, but **upon closer inspection, they noticed something odd:**

**None bore the Adventure Guild emblem.** They all appeared to be independent hunters, echo traders, or low-ranking members of other guilds. It was as if this mine were a dumping ground the **Adventure Guild used to dispose of its rivals or "leftovers."**

Shizuren was more **tense and withdrawn than usual.** Her eyes were fixed on the cracks in the walls and the twists of the tunnels. Suddenly, she stopped.

> **SHIZUREN (muttering)**

> This place... it reminds me of the **labyrinths** I used to enter. They'd always **shove me** inside. Dark. Wet. And... **they'd test me.**

Her voice sounded less like her usual anger and more like someone recalling a **distant, traumatic memory**. Kai, Seiryū, and Ryon looked at her. This was the **most personal, most vulnerable thing** they'd ever heard from Shizuren.

Then, suddenly, Shizuren's eyes **fixed on the void.** He raised his nose and **sniffed.** As if following an invisible trail. And in an instant, **he dropped to all fours like an animal.**

> **SHIZUREN (in a sharp, urgent voice)**

> **Follow me.**

And **she began to run.** But not like a human, **like a predator**—on all fours, fast, agile, into the darkness of the tunnel. Leaping over corpses, slipping through narrow passages.

**Everyone was stunned.** For a moment, they hesitated.

> **SEIRYŪ**

> Is this a trap?

> **RYON**

> The movement pattern... instinctive. Memory-based. **Real.**

Kai made his decision after just a moment's pause.

> **KAI**

> **Follow him!**

All three set off after Shizuren. Kai was thinking rapidly in his mind as his green torch tried to light their path:

*"Did they always put me in these?" This kid... where did this human-looking guy come from? "Labyrinths," "they'd test us"... Was this **training**? Or **captivity**? Damn it, he told me not to call him a "kid." Because was he a "kid"? An experiment?*

Shizuren made an unexpected sharp turn and plunged into **a narrow, almost hidden crack on the right**. The others struggled to follow. The crack opened into **a natural chimney leading downward**. And below... **there was light.**

A warm, orange firelight. And **sounds.**

Shizuren stopped at the edge of the chimney and pointed downward. He was out of breath, but there was **a familiar horror** in his eyes.

The lost guild team.** They must have been the "lost echoes" Brog mentioned. But they weren't dead, as they had expected. **They were trapped.*

Shizuren turned to Kai. Her eyes were wide, her face pale. Her voice trembled:

> **SHIZUREN**

> They... **they** are like that. The same **look.** The same... **smell.** The ones who tested me.

Kai understood. The "labyrinths" and "testers" from Shizuren's past...

**The Adventure Guild's trainers**—or perhaps something darker. And this team below was a part of that past.

Just then, a voice rose from below. The man with the echo detector had lifted his head, staring **directly at the chimney where they were hiding**. The device was beeping.

> **ADVENTURERS' GUILD SOLDIER (shouting)**

> **SOMEONE'S UP THERE! IT'S PICKING UP AN ECHO!**

Kai had to make a quick decision. Was Brog's trap meant to find this lost team, or to **eliminate them**? Would Shizuren's trauma lead them to rescue the team, or to seek revenge?

**THE SCENE FREEZES ON KAI'S FACE, FROZEN IN A FLASH OF CALCULATION.**

The soldiers' guns fired! Bullets rained down the narrow chimney toward the location of the Ashen Covenant.

**Seiryū** suddenly lunged forward. He raised his katana, tracing a **vertical circle**. The steel sliced through the air with a **whizzing** sound. And it wasn't just physical—he imbued the katana's movement with his **Echo**.

An **invisible, air-vibrating shield** formed in the air **in the shape of a plus sign**. The bullets struck this shield, **bounced** off, and scattered in all directions, hitting the tunnel walls. It was as if an invisible wall was protecting them, but the tension on Seiryū's face showed that this wasn't sustainable for long.

Kai used this brief protective barrier to shout:

> **KAI**

> HEY, SOLDIERS! CALM DOWN! **BROG** SENT US! HE SAID YOU WERE HERE!

The firing ceased for a moment. One of the soldiers—not the one tending to the wounded, but the one with the echo sensor—stepped forward. His face was covered in dust, his eyes bloodshot.

> **ADVENTURE SOLDIER #1 (laughing through gritted teeth)**

> **Brog?** He's fine… but he left us here to **die!** And up there, **everyone** knows his name! That's no surprise!

Kai knew time was running out. Seiryū couldn't hold on much longer. He had to speak reason.

> **KAI**

> That's enough for now. Calm down. Here, if we **can't reach an agreement,** the seven of us are **trapped!** It doesn't make sense!

Then, his voice took on a **threatening edge**. His eyes shifted to the **trembling, rage-filled Shizuren** beside him.

> **KAI**

> **We're coming down.** Look... **even of our men** would be **more than enough to kill you!**

Shizuren was triggered by these words. **Growling,** she lunged toward the edge of the chimney, her hands beginning to **glow** with black-green rotten energy. Kai reached out to stop him, but the **familiar, traumatic rage** had returned to Shizuren's eyes.

> **KAI (final warning)**

> **Right now, one of them is raging to kill you!** **Lower your weapons!** We're coming down!

The Adventure Guild soldiers hesitated. They **felt** Shizuren's wild energy. The wounded one retreated in fear.

Kai acted immediately. **There was no time.** Seiryū's shield was about to collapse. Shizuren was about to explode.

> **KAI (to his team)**

> **TOUCH ME!** ALL OF YOU!

His hand went to the hilt of **the ancient sword Mira had given him.** His **left eye (Nethra) flashed wildly,** and the green flame torch **went out instantly.** Instead, the **shadows around him came to life, thickening.**

Ryon was the first to realize it. He placed his hand on Kai's shoulder. Seiryū, as he lowered his katana, placed his other hand on Kai's other shoulder. Shizuren resisted, but Kai **firmly** pulled her arm, making contact.

**Kai embraced the four of them all at once.**

And **he transformed into a shadow.**

This was not teleportation. Their bodies transformed into a **dense, liquid shadow.** Their weight vanished. Gravity **reversed** for them.

Kai **controlled the descent.** The four glided down the chimney in a **dark, smoky stream**. The soldiers' guns fired again, but the bullets passed right through their **shadow forms**, unable to harm them.

They landed on the cave floor **silently, reverting to their solid forms**. Right in the middle of the soldiers.

**The sight was shocking:** One second ago they were above, now they were below, right at the tips of their guns.

Kai, maintaining his form—**his shadow still wrapped around the other three—**looked at the soldiers. His voice emerged, **echoing through multiple layers:**

> **KAI (shadow voice)**

> **Weapons. Down. Now.**

It wasn't a question. Their shadow forms posed a superhuman threat.

The Adventure Guild soldiers, in a state of shock, slowly lowered their weapons to the ground.

Kai slowly returned to his solid form. The others did as well. Shizuren immediately tried to make a move toward the soldiers, but Seiryū gently pulled him back with his **chain**.

The wounded soldier groaned. The other two stared at the Ashen Covenant, particularly at **Kai, who was still leaking shadow energy**.

> **ADVENTURE SOLDIER #1 (trembling)**

> You... who **are** you?

Kai adjusted his hat. The glint in his left eye was fading.

> **KAI**

> Your chance at salvation. We know Brog's game. Now... **tell us what's going on here.** And maybe **all of us** can get out of here.

**THE SCENE FADES AMIDST THE TENSION-FILLED STARE-DOWN BETWEEN THE TWO GROUPS.**

**(SCENE - CAVE, TENSION-FILLED DIALOG)**

Kai's threat hung in the air. The wounded soldier's moan was the only sound echoing off the cave's damp walls.

> **KAI**

> Then listen. We're getting **out of here.** And when we get out… we'll settle the score with Brog. You'll be there to witness it.

The Adventure Guild soldiers looked at one another. They wavered between hope and doubt. Then, the soldier with the echo detector—let's call him **Jax**—stepped forward. The fear on his face had given way to **bitter reality**.

> **JAX**

> An exit? There is no exit. Brog has sealed **every path**. But... but maybe there was a **reason** he brought us here. Not just death.

He reached his hand toward the depths of the cave, toward the **mouth of a dark tunnel**. In that direction, a faint, bluish glow was flickering in the distance.

> **JAX (continuing, in a low voice)**

> There... there's a **crystal stone**. An Echo crystal. Pure, raw Echo energy. Brog sent us here **for it**. "Take it and bring it back," he said. But...

His eyes drifted to his wounded friend on the ground.

> **JAX**

> ...we couldn't get much further. **They** stopped us. Then Brog cut off communication, pulled the elevator, and **left us here to die.**

As Kai listened to what was being said, his eyes fixed on that **distant bluish glow**. *Crystal stone... Pure Echo...* Could this be the "Stone" they were looking for? Or was it just a source of echoes?

Just then, **a voice came from the darkness.**

First, **a hiss.** Then, **a scratching sound.** Followed by, **a metallic, high-pitched scream.** And a voice, **sounding almost human but not quite,** screamed in panic:

> **VOICE FROM AFAR (screaming)**

> **SOLDIER! THEY'RE COMING! THEY'RE ALL COMING! WE'RE TRAPPED!**

Jax's face **turned pale instantly.** The other soldiers scrambled to grab their weapons from the ground.

> **JAX (to Kai, eyes wide with horror)**

> **They're!** The mine **is alive!** It's what Brog was talking about! They're protecting the crystal!

And in that moment, **the darkness erupted.**

**Four-legged,** human-sized but **far more agile** creatures began **pouring out** from every corner of the tunnel. Their skin was **dark gray and rough,** as if camouflaged by the rocks. They had **huge, sharp, crystal-like claws**. Their mouths were filled with countless needle-like teeth, and they glowed with a **bluish light**—they were feeding on **Echo energy**!

**There were dozens of them.** From the walls, the ceiling, the floor... **They were coming from everywhere.**

> **SHIZUREN (with wild excitement)**

> **THERE IT IS! FINALLY!**

> **SEIRYŪ (swinging his katana)**

> Formation! Back-to-back!

> **RYON (raising his rifle)**

> Biological structure unknown! Scanning for weak points!

Kai quickly scanned his surroundings. Two groups: his own four-person team and three wounded/dazed soldiers. The only exit was blocked. The only way forward was **toward the crystal and the direction the creatures were coming from.**

The decision **took less than a second.**

> **KAI (to the entire group, with a sharp command)**

> **TOWARD THE CRYSTAL!** MOVE! If they're coming from there, there must be **something** protecting or scaring them there! **LET'S GO!**

The Ashen Covenant moved instantly. Seiryū led the charge, creating a **storm** with his katana and chain. Ryon **struck the approaching creatures from a distance** with single shots. Shizuren charged forward with fervor, her corrupted energy beginning to **melt the first wave of creatures**.

Kai turned to Jax.

> **KAI**

> **Lift the wounded one!** Either you follow us, or you **stay here!**

Jax and the other uninjured soldier grabbed the wounded man by the arms and lifted him. **The retreat began.**

The scene turned into a **chaotic scramble and clash**:

- **Seiryū** parries with his katana, using his crystal claws.

- **Ryon** **shattered** the head of a creature that had closed in for close combat with the butt of his rifle.

- **Shizuren** sent a **corrosive wave** at a horde of creatures.

- **Kai** turns around and throws **shadow blades** to protect Jax and the wounded man.

And all of them are making a **race for their lives** toward that **blueish glow**, the crystal stone.

**Just as Chapter 5 comes to a close,** the camera zooms in on **Kai's face.** Amid the dust, sweat, and a greenish glow, there is **only one expression on his face: pure determination.** The approaching creatures are fading into shadows, and as they begin to be absorbed, the creatures are melting away.
