Chapter 13 - Cosmic Jurisdiction

The silence in the grand ballroom was absolute.

Hundreds of the Azure Empire's most elite aristocrats stood frozen like statues. They stared at the small spark of crimson-orange fire dancing effortlessly across Silas's knuckles.

It was Kael's fire. Everyone knew it. The unique signature of the Kael bloodline was unmistakable.

And now, a disgraced, "talentless" mortal was wielding it.

"Monster," a noblewoman whispered, breaking the silence. She backed away, her hands trembling as she clutched her silk skirts.

"He stole it. He actually stole an Awakened's magic!" another gasped.

On the scorched marble floor, Kael wept. He clawed at his own chest, sobbing hysterically as the reality of his shattered core set in. He was no longer a Bronze-Tier prodigy. He was less than human in the eyes of his peers.

Silas ignored the whispers. He extinguished the flame with a flick of his wrist and turned to the trembling Imperial Magistrate.

"The duel has concluded," Silas said, his voice echoing cleanly through the cavernous hall. "I claim my wager."

The Magistrate flinched, clutching his robes. He looked at Silas, then down at Kael, and finally toward Duke Valerius for guidance.

Before the Magistrate could speak, a roar of sheer, unadulterated fury shattered the tension.

"MY SON!"

A large, heavily armored man shoved his way through the crowd of stunned nobles. His fiery red hair matched Kael's, but his aura was significantly denser. He wore a silver breastplate adorned with the crest of a blazing hawk.

Lord Aldous Kael. The Patriarch of the Kael Barony.

Aldous dropped to his knees beside his sobbing son. He grabbed Kael's shoulders, his hands glowing with diagnostic healing magic. A second later, the Patriarch's face drained of color.

"His core... it's completely gone. There isn't even a trace of mana left," Aldous whispered, horror bleeding into his voice.

He snapped his head up, his eyes burning with lethal intent as he glared at Silas.

"You demonic trash," Aldous snarled, rising to his feet and drawing a massive, two-handed broadsword. "What dark art did you use?! Give my son his magic back, or I will cleave you in two!"

Silas didn't reach for a weapon. He didn't even drop into a stance. He just looked at the Patriarch with mild, corporate annoyance.

"Your son issued a formal challenge," Silas stated calmly. "He agreed to the terms. He lost. I seized his assets as payment. It was a perfectly legal transaction."

"Legal?!" Aldous roared, his broadsword igniting with roaring flames. "You wagered your worthless life for my entire Barony! My lands! My vaults! My title!"

"Correct," Silas nodded. "And I am here to collect. Hand over the signet ring and the estate deeds."

Aldous let out a booming, derisive laugh. "You are not just a monster; you are a fool. Kael is merely the heir! He has no legal authority to wager the Barony. The lands belong to me! By Imperial Law, that contract is null and void!"

The crowd murmured in agreement. The Patriarch was right. An heir could not gamble away an estate he did not yet own.

The Magistrate stepped forward, wiping sweat from his brow.

"Lord Aldous is correct," the Magistrate declared, finding his courage now that the Patriarch was backing him. "Under Imperial Edict, Article Four, a dependent cannot transfer patriarchal assets. The wager is invalid. Furthermore, the use of soul-stealing magic is strictly forbidden. Guards! Arrest this boy!"

A dozen heavily armored Spire Guards drew their halberds and stepped into the ring, surrounding Silas.

Duke Valerius watched from the edge of the circle, a cruel, satisfied smirk touching his lips. Silas had exposed his terrifying power, but he had overplayed his hand. The law of the Empire was absolute.

"Invalid?" Silas repeated softly.

He looked around at the drawn weapons. He looked at the smug Patriarch. He looked at the Magistrate.

Silas chuckled. It started low, but quickly grew into a cold, mocking laugh that sent chills down the spines of the surrounding guards.

"You think I operate under Imperial Law?" Silas asked, his neon-blue eyes flaring to life. "Your empire is built on borrowed time and stolen magic. I answer to a much higher jurisdiction."

Silas raised his right hand.

"System. Produce the contract."

A burst of golden sparks erupted in the center of the room. The sparks rapidly condensed, forming the exact parchment Kael had signed earlier. But it was no longer physical paper. It was a glowing, ethereal ledger floating in mid-air.

"Magistrate," Silas said, pointing at the glowing document. "You witnessed this wager with your Imperial Seal, did you not?"

"I did," the Magistrate stammered. "But as I said, it is legally void—"

"Quiet," Silas commanded. The sheer cosmic authority in his voice forced the Magistrate's jaw shut.

Silas turned his glowing eyes to Lord Aldous.

"You claim Kael cannot wager the Barony because the assets belong to you. Let's audit that claim."

"System. [Appraise] the Kael Barony's financial foundation."

[Initiating Deep Audit...][Target: House Kael.][Asset Origin: The Kael Barony lands were seized 200 years ago using illegally diverted Leyline energy. The glowing blue text expanded across the air, projecting perfectly for the entire ballroom to see.

Aldous Kael's face turned stark white. "What... what is that? What lies are you projecting?!"

"Your family has been bankrupt for two centuries, Aldous," Silas said coldly. "You don't own your land. You don't own your magic. You don't even own your title. You've been operating a fraudulent enterprise on cosmic credit."

Silas took a step forward, ignoring the guards' halberds.

"When an account is in default, the debt is inherited by the bloodline," Silas explained, tapping the floating golden contract. "Kael signed this document with his blood and his soul. As a direct descendant of a bankrupt House, his signature triggered an automatic collateral review."

Aldous raised his broadsword, his hands shaking violently. "Shut up! Shut up and die!"

He swung the blazing blade directly at Silas's neck.

Silas didn't move.

Before the blade could touch Silas, the golden contract exploded into dozens of ethereal blue chains.

The chains shot forward, wrapping around Aldous's arms, his torso, and the blazing broadsword. The flames on the sword instantly died, snuffed out by the absolute law of the System.

Aldous grunted, struggling against the immaterial bindings, but it was like trying to wrestle a mountain.

"By the authority vested in me by the Absolute Debt System," Silas declared, his voice echoing with a terrifying, divine resonance. "I am calling in the loan."

[Target Entity: House Kael.][Debt threshold critically breached. Cross-referencing Bloodline Signature on Wager Contract.][Validation Confirmed. Wager is Absolute.]

The Magistrate screamed as the Imperial Seal he had used to witness the document suddenly shattered on his finger. The cosmic law completely overrode the mortal law of the Azure Empire.

"No! Stop!" Aldous roared, dropping his sword as the blue chains tightened around his hands.

A sharp, agonizing tearing sound echoed through the hall.

The heavy, jewel-encrusted signet ring on Aldous's right hand—the symbol of the Kael Patriarch—was forcefully ripped from his finger by an invisible force.

It flew through the air and landed perfectly in Silas's outstretched palm.

[Asset Seized: Kael Patriarch Signet Ring.]

But the System wasn't done.

A spatial tear ripped open directly above the golden contract. A cascade of heavy, wax-sealed parchment scrolls spilled out, floating gently down into Silas's arms.

They were the original deeds to the Kael estate, physically teleported from the family's heavily guarded underground vault.

[Assets Seized: Land Deeds, Vault Keys, and Noble Title.][Transaction Complete.][The Kael Barony has been successfully transferred to Host.]

The blue chains vanished. Aldous collapsed to his knees, staring at his bare, bleeding finger in absolute disbelief.

The Spire Guards lowered their halberds, backing away from Silas in sheer terror. They weren't just looking at a powerful mage. They were looking at a being who could rewrite ownership and reality with a snap of his fingers.

Duke Valerius stepped back into the shadows of his alcove, his fists clenched tight enough to draw blood. For the first time in his life, the untouchable Duke felt true, primal fear.

Silas slipped the heavy signet ring onto his own finger and neatly tucked the land deeds into his suit jacket.

He looked down at Lord Aldous and the crippled Kael shivering on the floor.

"You have twenty-four hours to vacate my property," Silas said, his voice entirely devoid of mercy. "If I find either of you on my estate tomorrow, I will charge you with trespassing. And my eviction methods are significantly less polite."

Silas turned his back on the broken family and began walking toward the grand exit of the Apex Spire.

The sea of aristocrats parted for him instantly, pressing themselves against the walls to avoid touching him. They held their breath, terrified that making eye contact might bankrupt them next.

The Vance Collection Agency had claimed its first major asset.

Silas stepped out into the neon rain of the night, a cold smile touching his lips. He was no longer a slum-dwelling outcast.

He was legally a Baron of the Azure Empire.
