Chapter 41 - Chapter 39

Late that night, the camp had finally settled into a restless, exhausted sleep. The glowing bioluminescence of the forest pulsed gently beyond the heavy wooden gates, casting an eerie, beautiful light over the perimeter.

Sitting on a thick, fallen log near the edge of the camp, Aleksander raised his hand. With a subtle, fluid flick of his wrist, the ambient sounds of the crackling fires and distant wind vanished instantly, sealed out by the invisible dome of his privacy charm.

Octavia sat beside him, nervously picking at the bark of the log.

"I have made a decision," Aleksander stated quietly, his dark eyes fixed on the distant, looming silhouette of Mount Weather. "I am going to tell them."

Octavia stopped picking at the bark and turned her head, her blue eyes wide with alarm. "Tell who? The whole camp?"

"No," Aleksander replied, his voice calm and measured. "Just the inner circle. Bellamy, Clarke, Monty, and Jasper."

Octavia's breath hitched. She aggressively shook her head, her protective instincts immediately flaring up. "Alex, are you insane? You saw what happened tonight.

This camp is a powder keg. If Bellamy thinks you're some kind of unnatural threat, his first instinct is going to be to put a bullet in you. And Clarke? I don't know how she will react."

"I am aware of their reaction, Octavia," Aleksander countered smoothly, unbothered by her panic. "But the situation has changed. We are completely cut off from the Ark, and we are sitting in the middle of a heavily armed, hostile territory. The Grounders are coming. Mount Weather is watching."

He turned to look at her, the faint, ethereal light reflecting in his predatory gaze.

"If I fight this war holding myself back—pretending to be just another human with a metal knife—we are all going to die,"

Aleksander said with absolute, chilling certainty. "I need my wings to scout the terrain. I need my magic to heal the wounded and level the battlefield. I cannot do that if I am constantly hiding from my own leadership."

"But you can't trust them!" Octavia argued, her voice pleading, though it was muffled entirely by the privacy charm. "Not with a secret this big. If even one of them slips up and tells the rest of the camp, or if the Ark eventually comes down... you're dead."

Aleksander's expression hardened into a cold, ruthless mask. The faint, mysterious smile that often played on his lips completely vanished, replaced by the ancient, calculating authority of his Fey blood.

"I am not relying on their honor, Octavia," Aleksander corrected softly, his voice carrying a dark, lethal edge. "Trust is a human vulnerability. I operate on guarantees."

Octavia frowned, a cold shiver running down her spine at his tone. "What does that mean?"

"It means I have methods to force their silence," Aleksander explained seamlessly. "In the old world, the Fey did not rely on handshakes. We used blood magic and bindings. Before I reveal my true nature to them, I will cast a Geas—a magical vow. It will bind the secret to their very souls."

Octavia stared at him in awe and slight horror. "You can do that?"

"Yes," Aleksander confirmed coldly. "If they try to speak of my magic to anyone outside the circle, the binding will literally seal their throats. If they try to write it down, their hands will paralyze. If they attempt to betray me to the Ark, the magic will erase the memories from their minds entirely before the words can even leave their lips."

He leaned in slightly, his dark eyes locking onto hers to ensure she understood the absolute gravity of his power.

"I am not asking for their permission to exist," Aleksander stated. "I am offering them the firepower they need to survive. And they will keep my secret, because I will leave them absolutely no physical choice."

Octavia swallowed hard. The sheer, ruthless pragmatism of it was terrifying, but it was also undeniably effective. On Earth, being soft got you killed. Aleksander wasn't just surviving; he was mastering the board.

After a long moment of heavy silence, Octavia let out a defeated breath and gave a slow nod.

"Okay," Octavia whispered, accepting the brutal reality of their situation. "When do we do it?"

"Tomorrow," Aleksander replied, dropping his gaze back toward the dark, menacing tree line. "We secure the perimeter, we pull them into the dropship, and we tell them me."

Octavia looked at him, her blue eyes tracing the sharp lines of his face in the dim, ethereal light of the forest.

He was terrifying. He was ancient. He was ruthless.

And in a camp full of terrified children and chaotic politics, he was the only thing making her feel genuinely safe.

Driven by the sudden, overwhelming adrenaline of the night and the profound intimacy of the secret they shared, Octavia threw caution to the wind. She leaned in, closing the distance between them, and pressed her lips firmly against his.

Aleksander froze for a fraction of a second. His heightened senses had already seen both Octavia and Clarke's lingering glances and subtle shifts in behavior over the past week; he knew they were both drawn to him.

But his mind shelved all those emotions and focused on operating with cold, calculated logic of ensuring the survival of the group. Romance was a distraction he hadn't allowed himself to entertain at this period.

Yet, as Octavia kissed him, he didn't pull away. He allowed the brief, intense connection, his hands resting gently on her waist to steady her.

Octavia pulled back a moment later, her breath hitching slightly, a nervous but genuine smile playing on her lips. She opened her mouth to say something, but before the words could form, her eyes darted past his shoulder and locked onto the night sky.

Her smile widened into pure, childlike wonder.

"Look," Octavia whispered, pointing up into the dark expanse above the treeline.

Aleksander turned his head.

High above the atmosphere, a brilliant, fiery streak of light was tearing across the pitch-black sky. It burned with a fierce, unnatural intensity, leaving a glowing, white-hot tail in its wake as it plummeted toward the horizon.

"A shooting star," Octavia murmured, stepping closer to him, entirely captivated by the sudden beauty of it. "My mom used to tell me about them. She said if you see one, you should make a wish."

Aleksander narrowed his eyes. His vision pierced through the darkness and the atmospheric distortion with terrifying clarity. He didn't see a rock burning up in the mesosphere. He saw the harsh, metallic angles of a century-old hull. He saw the controlled, rhythmic pulsing of retro-thrusters fighting against the brutal friction of reentry.

"That is no shooting star, Octavia,"

Aleksander stated, his voice instantly dropping all warmth, replaced by cold, tactical calculation. He stood up, breaking the privacy charm with a sharp flick of his wrist. "That is a dropship."

High above the clouds, the violent, fiery friction of reentry was tearing at the rusted hull of the escape pod.

Inside the tiny, cramped cockpit, the noise was absolutely deafening. The entire console was shaking so violently that Raven Reyes could barely read the blinking, analog gauges. Alarms were blaring in a continuous, panic-inducing screech, and the temperature inside her heavy EVA spacesuit was rising rapidly.

"Come on, hold together you piece of junk," Raven grunted, her teeth gritted as she fought the heavy, manual flight controls.

She checked the altimeter. She was hitting the stratosphere, and the sheer velocity of the descent was threatening to rip the pod entirely apart.

With her heavy, gloved hands, Raven reached up and grabbed the main retro-fire lever. She took a sharp, deep breath of canned oxygen, bracing herself against the violent G-force.

"Here goes nothing," Raven yelled into the empty cockpit.

She yanked the heavy metal lever backward, violently powering the primary thrusters to slow her descent, hurtling blindly toward the glowing surface of Earth.
