Chapter 9 - Chapter Nine: The Eyes That Never Blink

The darkness did not feel empty anymore. It felt alive.

Raihan stood frozen in place, his breath shallow as the whispers continued to echo around him. They were no longer distant or faint. They were close, surrounding him from every direction, pressing in like an unseen force tightening its grip.

"You were never supposed to remember."

The voices overlapped, rising and falling in an unnatural rhythm that made his head spin. He covered his ears, but it did nothing. The sound was not just around him. It was inside him.

"Stop!" Raihan shouted, his voice breaking through the chaos.

For a brief second, everything went silent.

Then, a single voice spoke. Clear. Calm. Terrifyingly close.

"But you did."

Raihan's hands slowly dropped. His heart pounded violently as he tried to locate the source of the voice.

"Show yourself," he said, forcing strength into his words.

A faint light flickered in the distance. It was weak at first, barely illuminating the room, but it was enough to reveal something that made his blood run cold.

Shapes.

Tall, shadowy figures stood along the walls, their forms barely visible, as if they were part of the darkness itself.

Raihan's breath caught in his throat.

They were not moving.

But they were watching.

He could feel it.

Every step he took, every breath he made, it was all being observed.

"Who are you?" he asked, his voice trembling despite his effort to stay calm.

No answer came.

Instead, the light flickered again.

And for a split second, he saw them more clearly.

Eyes.

Dozens of them.

Unblinking.

Cold.

Focused entirely on him.

Raihan stumbled back, his pulse racing out of control.

"This is not real," he whispered again, but the words felt hollow now.

He had said it too many times.

And each time, it felt less true.

"You wanted the truth."

The same voice returned.

Raihan turned sharply, his eyes searching for the speaker.

"And now you see it."

The shadows shifted slightly, as if reacting to the words.

Raihan tightened his grip on the notebook, his mind racing.

"This has something to do with her, doesn't it?" he said, his voice filled with urgency. "Neela… what did you do to her?"

For the first time, the shadows moved.

Not forward.

Not backward.

But closer.

The distance between them and Raihan began to shrink without a single visible step.

"You are asking the wrong question."

The voice sounded almost amused.

Raihan's chest tightened.

"Then what is the right question?" he demanded.

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

Then the answer came.

"What did you do?"

The words hit him like a sudden удар.

Raihan froze.

His grip on the notebook loosened slightly as the memory from before resurfaced. The rain. The argument. The headlights.

"No…" he whispered, shaking his head. "I did not…"

But the voice did not stop.

"You chose to forget."

The shadows grew darker.

"You chose to leave her there."

Raihan's breath became uneven.

"That is not true," he said, but his voice lacked conviction.

"You walked away."

"I did not!"

The shout echoed through the darkness, but it sounded weak compared to the overwhelming presence around him.

The figures moved again.

Closer.

The cold air wrapped around him like invisible chains.

Raihan's heart pounded as fragments of memory began to return, sharper this time, more painful.

He remembered turning away.

He remembered the fear.

The sound of the approaching car.

And the moment he chose not to look back.

His knees nearly gave in.

"No…" he said again, his voice breaking.

"You were afraid," the voice continued, calm and relentless. "And fear made your choice."

Raihan felt something inside him shatter.

"I was trying to protect her," he said desperately.

"From what?"

The question lingered in the air.

Raihan had no answer.

Because deep down, he knew the truth.

He had not been protecting her.

He had been protecting himself.

The realization hit him harder than anything else.

His breathing became uneven as guilt flooded his mind.

"I did not know," he whispered.

"But you do now."

The shadows were closer than ever.

Their presence felt suffocating.

Raihan could no longer see the walls of the room. Only darkness. Only eyes.

Watching. Waiting.

"What do you want from me?" he asked, his voice barely holding together.

The answer came immediately.

"Remember."

The word echoed, repeating itself in his mind.

Remember.

Remember.

Remember.

Raihan closed his eyes tightly, as if trying to block it out. But the memories kept coming. Stronger. Clearer.

He saw Neela again.

Standing in the rain.

Calling his name.

And this time, he did not turn away.

He saw what happened next.

And when he did, his eyes snapped open in horror.

"No…"

His voice trembled.

"That cannot be…"

The truth was too much.

Too heavy.

Too real.

The shadows stopped moving.

The whispers faded.

And for a brief moment, everything became still again.

Then, a soft voice broke through the silence.

"Raihan…"

It was Neela.

But it sounded weaker this time.

Distant.

Like it was coming from somewhere far away.

Raihan turned toward the sound, his heart racing.

"Neela!" he called out.

A faint light appeared in front of him, softer than before, almost fragile.

And within that light, he saw her.

She looked different now.

Fading.

Like she was slowly disappearing.

"Do not listen to them," she said softly.

Raihan stepped forward.

"What is happening to you?" he asked urgently.

Neela's eyes met his.

And for a moment, everything else faded away.

"They feed on what you remember," she said. "The more you recall, the stronger they become."

Raihan froze.

His mind struggled to process her words.

"Then what am I supposed to do?" he asked.

Neela did not answer immediately.

Instead, she looked at him with a quiet sadness.

"You have to choose," she said.

"Choose what?"

Her voice softened even more.

"Between the truth… and me."

The light flickered.

Her form became even more unstable.

Raihan felt panic rising inside him.

"No… there has to be another way," he said.

But Neela only shook her head slowly.

"There is not."

The darkness began to close in again.

The whispers returned, louder than before.

"Remember."

"Let it all return."

"Set us free."

Raihan stood there, caught between two impossible choices.

To remember everything… and lose her.

Or to forget again… and lose the truth forever.

His heart pounded as the voices grew louder, drowning out everything else.

And just before the darkness swallowed him completely, one final thought crossed his mind.

What if the truth was never meant to save him?

What if it was meant to destroy him?
