Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: The first warning

Morning arrived slowly over the city, the grey clouds still hanging low after the stormy night. The streets were already alive again—taxis rushing through intersections, people hurrying toward offices, coffee shops buzzing with early conversations. To most people, it was just another normal day.

But for Jason Carter, something felt different.

He barely slept.

The message from the unknown number kept replaying in his mind.

You should ask Emily about Victor.

Then the second message.

She lied.

Jason sat at the kitchen table of his apartment, staring into a cup of coffee that had already gone cold. Across the room, Emily was getting ready for work, moving around calmly as she brushed her hair in front of the mirror.

If she was hiding something, she was very good at it.

Jason studied her quietly.

Emily looked exactly the same as always—beautiful, relaxed, completely at ease. She hummed softly to herself as she searched through her bag.

But Jason couldn't shake the feeling that something had changed.

Or maybe he was just seeing things differently now.

Emily turned toward him and smiled.

"You're staring again," she teased. "Did I suddenly grow two heads overnight?"

Jason chuckled lightly.

"Just thinking."

"Dangerous activity," she replied playfully.

She walked over and kissed him on the cheek before grabbing her coat.

"I'll be home late tonight," Emily said. "Sarah wants to meet for dinner after work."

Jason nodded.

Sarah Brooks had been Emily's best friend for years. Loud, funny, always full of gossip. Jason liked her, but he also knew Sarah had a habit of knowing things she probably shouldn't.

"Alright," Jason said. "Drive safe."

Emily smiled again and headed toward the door.

But just before leaving, she paused.

"By the way," she said casually, "why did you ask about Victor last night?"

Jason felt his chest tighten slightly.

He shrugged.

"Just heard the name somewhere."

Emily watched him for a moment, as if trying to read something in his face.

Then she nodded.

"Strange name to remember."

And with that, she left.

The apartment door clicked shut.

Jason sat there quietly for a long moment.

Then he grabbed his phone.

Still no reply from the unknown number.

He scrolled through the messages again.

You should ask Emily about Victor.

She lied.

Jason leaned back in his chair, thinking.

If someone was trying to warn him about Emily, why stay anonymous?

Unless…

The person was afraid.

Or watching.

His thoughts were interrupted when his phone rang.

Ryan Cole.

Jason answered.

"Morning," Ryan's voice came through. "You look like death."

Jason frowned.

"You can see me now?"

"No," Ryan laughed. "But I know that voice. Late night?"

"You could say that."

Ryan hesitated for a second before speaking again.

"Listen… something weird happened at the office."

Jason straightened.

"What do you mean?"

"When I got here this morning, the security guard said someone tried to break in last night."

Jason's stomach dropped.

"What?"

"Yeah," Ryan continued. "They didn't get far, but the cameras caught someone trying to access your floor."

Jason stood up immediately.

"I'm coming there now."

Across the city, inside a quiet police station, Detective Daniel Hayes studied a crime scene photo pinned to the investigation board.

A man had been found early that morning in an alley behind a nightclub.

Dead.

No wallet.

No phone.

Just a single piece of paper in his jacket pocket.

Daniel adjusted his glasses and read the note again.

One name.

Victor Kane

Daniel turned toward his partner.

"Get me everything we have on this Victor guy," he said.

"Why?" his partner asked.

Daniel stared at the photo of the dead man.

"Because," he replied quietly, "something tells me this isn't just a random murder."

Meanwhile, Jason arrived at his office building twenty minutes later.

Ryan was waiting for him near the elevator.

"You need to see this," Ryan said.

They walked into the security room where the night guard was replaying the footage.

The video showed the hallway outside Jason's office around 2:17 AM.

A tall man wearing a dark hood moved quickly toward the door.

His face wasn't visible.

But just before leaving the hallway…

The man stopped.

Slowly…

He turned toward the security camera.

Even though his face was hidden, the message was clear.

He wanted to be seen.

Jason felt a chill crawl up his spine.

Ryan leaned closer to the screen.

"Whoever this guy is," he muttered, "he's not afraid of getting caught."

Jason stared at the frozen image.

Something about the man's posture felt familiar.

But he couldn't explain why.

Then Jason's phone buzzed again.

Another message from the unknown number.

He opened it slowly.

This time the message was longer.

"Victor Kane is dead."

Jason's heart skipped.

Another message appeared immediately after.

"And Emily Stone is the reason."

Jason slowly lifted his eyes from the phone.

Outside his office window, the city stretched endlessly beneath the morning sun.

But suddenly, it didn't feel like the same city anymore.

Because if the message was true…

Then the woman he loved might be hiding something far darker than he ever imagined.

And somewhere in the city…

Marcus Reed watched the news report about Victor Kane's death on television.

He leaned back in his chair and smiled.

"Let the chaos begin," he whispered.
