Chapter 10 - Chapter 10 – The First Real Lead

Morning came slowly inside the warehouse.

Not because the sun was shining.

But because the kidnappers had turned on a few dusty overhead lights, signaling that another long day of captivity had begun.

The students barely slept during the night.

The cold concrete floor made their backs ache.

The fear made their stomachs tight.

And the silence was worse than the threats.

Noah slowly sat up.

He looked around the room.

Some students were still sleeping.

Others were whispering quietly.

Alex sat beside him, hugging her knees.

"You didn't sleep either?" Noah asked quietly.

She shook her head.

"Every time I close my eyes… I see that cutlass."

Noah looked at his hands.

The memory still made his heart race.

"They only wanted to scare us," he said.

Across the room, Zara sat against the wall, staring blankly at the floor.

She had been forced to record two videos already.

The kidnappers treated her differently.

Not better.

Just… differently.

Because she was their most valuable hostage.

A Moment of HopeA few students began talking quietly.

One boy tried to crack a joke.

Another girl started humming a song.

Slowly, the mood shifted.

For the first time since the kidnapping, the students were trying to lift each other's spirits.

Someone started clapping softly.

Then a few others joined.

Even Noah smiled slightly.

But the moment didn't last.

A loud metal door slammed open.

Three kidnappers walked in.

Their leader for the shift, a tall man with a scar across his cheek, looked around the room with irritation.

"What's all this noise?"

No one answered.

He looked at the group more carefully.

They were sitting together.

Talking.

Laughing.

Bonding.

And that was dangerous.

Because fear worked best when people felt alone.

He turned to the other kidnappers.

"Separate them."

The students froze.

"What?" one girl whispered.

"You heard me," the man said coldly.

"Move."

Two kidnappers stepped forward with rifles.

"Boys on that side."

"Girls on the other."

Panic spread instantly.

"No!" Alex cried.

"Noah!"

One kidnapper grabbed her arm and shoved her toward the other group.

Noah tried to resist.

"Let her go!"

The man punched him in the stomach.

Noah collapsed to his knees.

"Move," the kidnapper growled.

Within minutes the room had been split into two separate groups.

Girls on one side.

Boys on the other side.

Zara looked terrified.

The scarred kidnapper spoke again.

"You talk too much."

"So now you stay quiet."

He pointed toward the boys.

"If anyone tries to cross this line…"

He kicked a metal pipe across the floor.

"…someone loses a finger."

The kidnappers stepped back.

Silence returned to the warehouse.

But this time it felt colder.

Much colder.

Sadiq Goes to the MayorAcross the city, Inspector Sadiq Bello walked through the gates of the mayor's residence.

Police vehicles were parked everywhere.

Security officers watched every visitor carefully.

Sadiq showed his badge.

"I need to speak with the mayor."

The guard hesitated.

"Let me check."

Minutes later the door opened.

But instead of the mayor, the PA stepped outside.

He smiled politely.

"Inspector Bello."

"I hear you're leading the investigation."

"Yes," Sadiq replied.

"And I need to speak with the mayor."

"I'm afraid that won't be possible."

Sadiq frowned.

"Why?"

"The mayor is extremely busy right now."

"This is about his daughter."

"I understand," the PA said calmly.

"But he's preparing an official statement."

Sadiq crossed his arms.

"I just need fifteen minutes."

The PA shook his head.

"I'm sorry."

"Not today."

Sadiq studied him carefully.

The man was calm.

Too calm.

"You realize," Sadiq said slowly,

"I'm trying to save your boss's daughter."

The PA smiled slightly.

"And we appreciate your efforts."

"But the mayor must remain focused."

Sadiq stared at him for a few seconds.

Something about this man bothered him.

But without proof, there was nothing he could do.

"Fine," Sadiq said.

"But tell him I'll be back."

He turned and walked away.

The PA watched him leave.

Then quietly closed the door.

The IdeaBack at police headquarters, Sadiq stood in front of the investigation board again.

Photos covered the wall.

Warehouse images.

Vehicle sightings.

The missing bus driver.

The ransom video.

Something still didn't make sense.

The kidnappers had been holding twenty students for more than 24 hours.

Twenty teenagers needed food.

Water.

Supplies.

But the warehouse in the video looked abandoned.

No kitchen.

No cooking equipment.

Sadiq suddenly straightened.

"Wait…"

One of the officers looked up.

"Sir?"

"They're not cooking."

The officer frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"They don't have the facilities."

"So how are they feeding twenty kids?"

The room went quiet.

Another officer answered.

"They must be buying food."

Sadiq nodded slowly.

"Yes."

"And not small amounts."

"Twenty meals at a time."

He grabbed a marker and wrote on the board.

FOOD SOURCE

"They can't risk deliveries to the warehouse."

"Too easy to trace."

"So someone goes out…"

"…buys food…"

"…and bring it back."

The officers nodded.

"That means they're shopping somewhere nearby."

Sadiq turned toward the team.

"Here's what we do."

He began giving orders quickly.

"I want every fast-food restaurant, supermarket, and food outlet within a twenty-mile radius monitored."

"Officers in plain clothes."

"No uniforms."

"Watch for anyone buying food in large quantities."

The officers immediately started moving.

Phones rang.

Cars were dispatched.

Within minutes, dozens of undercover officers were heading out across the city.

Sadiq looked back at the board.

"We're closing in," he muttered.

Inside the Warehouse AgainThe separation had worked.

The students were quiet now.

Too quiet.

Alex sat with the other girls, hugging her knees.

Across the room, Noah sat with the boys.

They couldn't talk.

They could barely even look at each other.

The kidnappers had created a line of crates between the groups.

Zara sat silently beside Alex.

"I hate them," Alex whispered.

Zara nodded slowly.

"They want us scared."

"Well it's working."

Across the room, Noah tried to remain calm.

He looked around carefully.

Counting again.

Three guards.

Same as before.

But something else caught his attention.

One kidnapper walked in carrying plastic food containers.

He dropped them on a table.

Noah watched closely.

The containers had restaurant logos on them.

That meant something important.

Again they weren't as hidden as they thought.

The place they get them food could be nearby.

What if they could send a message out to the restaurant.

Noah looked across the room at Alex.

She couldn't hear him.

But he mouthed two words.

"Don't panic."

The PA Makes a CallLater that night, inside his private office, the PA made a quiet phone call.

Gentle Jack answered.

"Yes?"

"You need to stop buying food in public places."

Gentle Jack frowned.

"Why?"

"The police are watching supermarkets."

Jack remained silent for a moment.

Then he smiled.

"Inspector Sadiq."

"He's smarter than I expected."

"Adapt," the PA said.

"Find another way to get food."

The call ended.

Gentle Jack looked down at the students again.

The game was becoming interesting.
