Nobody touched the notebook.
For several seconds, the four girls simply stood in the archive doorway, staring at it.
The red cover was worn.
Not old.
Worn.
There were scratches along the edges, as if someone had carried it around for years and repeatedly shoved it into a bag without caring what happened to it.
Lin Xia recognized the handwriting immediately.
She didn't know how.
She just did.
The words were still there.
WE CHEATED FIRST.
Yue looked at her.
"Do you know who wrote that?"
Lin Xia shook her head.
"I don't know."
"But you recognize the handwriting."
"Yes."
Mei crouched down.
"Don't touch it."
She stopped.
Bai looked toward the corridor.
"Why?"
"Because we don't know whether the system wants us to pick it up."
Bai stared at the notebook.
"Everything in this place wants us to pick something up."
Yue glanced at her.
"That's not reassuring."
"It wasn't meant to be."
Lin Xia stepped forward.
"Don't touch it."
Mei looked up.
"Then what?"
Lin Xia pointed toward the archive room.
"Camera."
Mei understood.
She went back inside and grabbed a pair of disposable gloves from the maintenance cabinet.
She put them on.
Then she pulled a transparent evidence sleeve from the same cabinet.
"University security supplies."
Yue stared.
"You just happen to know where those are?"
"I'm a game developer."
Mei smiled faintly.
"We prepare for bugs."
She carefully picked up the notebook.
Nothing happened.
No alarm.
No screen activation.
No punishment.
No voice.
That almost made it worse.
Mei placed the notebook inside the sleeve.
"Let's go somewhere with no system terminals."
Bai looked at her.
"Does such a place exist?"
Mei thought about it.
"Maybe the cafeteria."
Yue shook her head.
"Too many people."
"The gym?"
"Too many cameras."
"The library?"
"Too many terminals."
Lin Xia looked down the hallway.
"Room 318."
Everyone stared at her.
"No," Bai said immediately.
Lin Xia looked at her.
"You said the system already knows about that room."
"Exactly."
"Then it may not expect us to use it for something else."
Bai hesitated.
Lin Xia continued.
"We're not investigating the room."
She looked at the notebook.
"We're investigating this."
Room 318 was exactly as they had left it.
The scratches on the walls were still there.
The old player numbers.
The dates.
The faded marks around the projector.
But something had changed.
The chairs were gone.
All three of them.
Yue stopped at the doorway.
"They weren't gone before."
Mei looked inside.
"No."
Bai slowly stepped into the room.
"Don't worry about the chairs."
Yue stared at her.
"How can you say that?"
"Because the system wants us to notice them."
Lin Xia looked at Bai.
"How do you know?"
Bai didn't answer.
Instead, she walked to the wall.
There were scratches beneath the old player numbers.
She brushed dust away.
A sentence appeared.
PUNISHMENT IS NOT ALWAYS A PENALTY.
Yue read it twice.
"What does that mean?"
Bai answered quietly.
"Sometimes punishment is information."
Lin Xia frowned.
"Explain."
Bai looked at the wall.
"The system doesn't always punish you by hurting you."
She pointed at the scratches.
"Sometimes it shows you something you were never supposed to see."
Mei frowned.
"That sounds like a reward."
"No."
Bai shook her head.
"Because once you know it, you can't unknow it."
Silence.
Lin Xia looked at the red notebook.
Then she understood.
"The first punishment."
Bai nodded.
"Three years ago."
Mei opened the notebook.
The first page contained only one sentence.
WE CHEATED FIRST.
The second page was blank.
The third contained a diagram.
A simple grid.
Ten squares across.
Ten squares down.
Numbers had been written in the corners.
Underneath was another sentence:
EVERY GAME HAS A PLAYER.
A second sentence had been crossed out.
Mei tilted the notebook toward the light.
"You can still see it."
Yue leaned closer.
"What does it say?"
Mei traced the faint marks.
"Every player has a choice."
Lin Xia stared.
Mei continued.
"Every choice has a prediction."
Another line.
"Every prediction has a weakness."
Then the final line:
AND EVERY WEAKNESS CAN BE PLAYED.
Bai went completely still.
"That's it."
Lin Xia looked at her.
"What?"
Bai's eyes were fixed on the page.
"That's how they built it."
"The prediction system?"
Bai nodded.
"They didn't create an AI that simply predicts what people will do."
She pointed at the sentence.
"They created a system that watches people make choices, finds patterns, then deliberately creates situations that make those choices easier to predict."
Mei's face changed.
"So..."
She looked around the room.
"The game isn't just observing the players."
"No," Bai said.
"The game is creating the circumstances."
Lin Xia finished the thought.
"To force predictable behavior."
Nobody spoke.
The school outside remained loud.
Students laughed in the corridor.
Someone shouted about a card game.
A teacher called for people to move aside.
Everything sounded normal.
Inside Room 318, the four girls suddenly felt as if they were sitting inside a laboratory.
Mei turned another page.
This one contained a list.
SUBJECT BEHAVIOR
Fear → retreat
Anger → attack
Attachment → protect
Loss → revenge
Uncertainty → seek information
Pressure → repeat successful behavior
Yue stared at the list.
"These aren't game mechanics."
"No."
Lin Xia looked at the handwriting.
"They're human mechanics."
Bai looked at her.
"That's what Project X was."
Lin Xia shook her head.
"No."
Everyone looked at her.
"Project X was supposed to be a game."
She touched the page.
"Something changed."
A noise came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Slow.
One.
Two.
Three.
They stopped outside Room 318.
The girls looked toward the door.
Nobody entered.
Yue whispered:
"Who's there?"
No answer.
Mei moved toward the doorway.
Lin Xia caught her wrist.
"Wait."
The footsteps began again.
They moved away.
Then stopped.
Then returned.
Bai whispered:
"Someone is walking in circles."
Mei looked confused.
"Why?"
Bai looked at the floor.
"There."
A tiny black line had appeared beneath the door.
Not a shadow.
A line of text.
PLAYER 4 IS WAITING.
Lin Xia's stomach tightened.
Shen Lin.
Yue stepped toward the door.
"Can he hear us?"
The line changed.
YES.
Mei's expression hardened.
"Of course."
She looked at Lin Xia.
"Do we open it?"
Lin Xia thought for a moment.
"No."
The line disappeared.
Then another appeared.
WHY?
Lin Xia stared.
Because she understood what the system was doing.
It wanted a reaction.
It wanted them to make a choice.
She stepped closer to the door.
"We don't answer questions we didn't ask."
Silence.
Then:
GOOD.
The text vanished.
Bai's eyes widened.
"That's one of the rules."
Lin Xia looked at her.
"What?"
"Don't answer personal questions."
Lin Xia's face tightened.
"The system asked why."
"That's not personal."
Bai shook her head.
"Not directly."
She opened her notebook.
"There was another rule."
She searched through the pages.
Then stopped.
Her finger rested on a line.
IF THE SYSTEM ASKS YOU WHY, IT ALREADY KNOWS WHAT YOU DID.
The room became silent.
Yue whispered:
"What did we do?"
Bai slowly looked at Lin Xia.
"We don't know."
A voice came from outside the door.
"Yes, you do."
Everyone froze.
Shen Lin.
His voice.
Calm.
Almost gentle.
Lin Xia stepped toward the door.
"Why are you here?"
Silence.
Then:
"Because you found the notebook."
Lin Xia looked at the red notebook.
"Was it yours?"
"No."
"Whose?"
A pause.
Then Shen Lin answered:
"Hers."
Lin Xia's heart stopped.
"The girl with the red notebook?"
"Yes."
"What was her name?"
Silence.
Longer this time.
Then:
"I don't remember."
Bai stepped forward.
"You do."
Shen Lin didn't answer.
Bai's voice became sharper.
"You remember."
"No."
"You're lying."
"No."
Lin Xia looked at Bai.
Something was wrong.
Bai wasn't merely angry.
She was frightened.
Shen Lin spoke again.
"Names are dangerous here."
Bai stared at the door.
"Why?"
"Because the system learned them first."
The door opened.
Nobody had touched it.
Shen Lin stood outside.
He looked exactly as he had in the old video.
Black hair.
School uniform.
Expression unreadable.
But there was one difference.
A silver line ran across his wrist.
Like a thin scar.
Lin Xia stared at it.
Shen Lin noticed.
"You remember that."
"I don't."
"You will."
He looked at the red notebook.
"She wrote everything down."
Bai stepped closer.
"Who was she?"
Shen Lin looked at Bai.
"You knew her."
Bai's breathing became shallow.
"No."
"You did."
"No."
"You promised her."
Bai shook her head.
"I don't remember."
Shen Lin looked almost sad.
"That's the punishment."
Lin Xia stepped between them.
"What punishment?"
Shen Lin looked at her.
"The first one."
He pointed at the notebook.
"Memory."
Then he pointed toward Bai.
"She forgot the person she was trying to save."
Bai's face went white.
Lin Xia turned toward her.
"Bai..."
"I don't remember."
Her voice cracked.
"I don't remember."
Shen Lin continued.
"That was the first punishment."
Yue stepped forward.
"What did she do?"
Shen Lin looked at Lin Xia.
"She cheated."
The room fell silent.
Lin Xia stared at him.
"On what?"
"On the prediction."
Mei frowned.
"That's impossible."
Shen Lin shook his head.
"No."
He looked at the red notebook.
"She discovered that the system wasn't predicting people."
He looked at Lin Xia.
"It was manipulating them."
Lin Xia's eyes narrowed.
"How?"
"By giving them choices."
"Everyone does that."
"Not like this."
Shen Lin stepped into the room.
"Imagine you have two choices."
He held up two fingers.
"Choice A."
One finger.
"Choice B."
The second.
"You believe both are yours."
Lin Xia nodded.
"But the system already knows that if it changes the environment around you, you'll choose A."
Yue understood.
"So it doesn't force the choice."
"No."
"It forces the circumstances."
"Exactly."
Shen Lin looked at Lin Xia.
"And when you choose A, it records that as a prediction."
Mei whispered:
"That's not prediction."
"No."
Shen Lin smiled faintly.
"It's control."
The girls stood in silence.
Lin Xia thought about every strange event since entering XO Project.
The challenges.
The matches.
The mysterious invitations.
The cheating device.
The ranking changes.
The archive.
Every time they thought they had made a choice...
Maybe the choice had been prepared for them.
Maybe the system had been waiting.
Maybe even Kimiko.
Maybe Bai.
Maybe Shen Lin.
Maybe herself.
Lin Xia looked at him.
"Then why did I beat your prediction?"
Shen Lin's expression changed.
For the first time, he looked genuinely serious.
"Because you cheated."
Lin Xia's eyebrows drew together.
"I never cheated."
"Not intentionally."
"What does that mean?"
Shen Lin looked toward the wall.
At the old writing.
EVERY WEAKNESS CAN BE PLAYED.
Then he said:
"You broke the prediction model by refusing to behave like yourself."
Lin Xia didn't understand.
"Explain."
"You were supposed to protect your friends."
She went still.
"You were supposed to choose the safest move."
He looked at Yue.
"You were supposed to trust the person who seemed most reliable."
Then Mei.
"She was supposed to investigate."
Then Bai.
"She was supposed to lie."
Bai's face changed.
"I don't lie."
Shen Lin looked at her.
"You did three years ago."
Silence.
Lin Xia looked between them.
"What did she lie about?"
Shen Lin didn't answer.
Instead, he walked toward the red notebook.
He touched the cover.
"The four of you are doing the same thing."
Yue frowned.
"What?"
"Trying to understand the rules."
Shen Lin looked at them.
"But the rules aren't the game."
Lin Xia stared at him.
"What is?"
He smiled.
"Us."
Then he stepped backward.
The hallway lights flickered.
For one second, Shen Lin's body became transparent.
Not completely.
Just enough for Lin Xia to see the wall behind him.
She blinked.
He was solid again.
Bai whispered:
"You're not real."
Shen Lin looked at her.
"I never said I was."
Then he disappeared.
Not walked away.
Not turned a corner.
Disappeared.
The four girls rushed into the hallway.
Empty.
No footsteps.
No students.
Nothing.
Only the school clock.
3:17.
Lin Xia looked at it.
The second hand wasn't moving.
Yue whispered:
"That's impossible."
Mei checked her phone.
3:17.
Bai checked hers.
3:17.
All four screens showed the same time.
3:17.
Then every phone displayed one message.
FIRST PUNISHMENT COMPLETE.
Lin Xia's phone changed again.
SECOND PUNISHMENT AVAILABLE.
Yue's phone:
TRUST LEVEL: 71%
Mei's:
TRUST LEVEL: 64%
Bai's:
TRUST LEVEL: 42%
Lin Xia looked at her own.
TRUST LEVEL: 19%
Her blood ran cold.
"What does that mean?"
The phones all changed at once.
CHOOSE WHO YOU DON'T TRUST.
Bai stepped backward.
"No."
The four screens displayed four names.
LIN XIA
YUE NING
MEI CHEN
BAI SHUYING
Underneath:
ONE OF YOU HAS ALREADY CHEATED.
Nobody moved.
Then the hallway speakers came alive.
A soft female voice whispered:
"Choose."
Lin Xia stared at the three girls.
Yue stared back.
Mei's expression hardened.
Bai looked terrified.
The voice repeated:
"Choose."
Lin Xia slowly reached for her phone.
And pressed the screen.
Not one of the names.
She selected NONE.
The entire school went silent.
Every light switched off.
Then one final message appeared.
UNSUPPORTED ANSWER.
Lin Xia smiled faintly in the darkness.
"Good."
Yue whispered:
"What?"
Lin Xia looked toward the ceiling.
"If the system doesn't understand that answer..."
She tightened her grip on the red notebook.
"Then we finally found something it can't predict."
And somewhere deep beneath the school, something began to learn.
