The atmosphere in the conference room was tense long before the meeting began.
It wasn't the kind of tension that came from uncertainty.
It was the kind that came from two powerful men who already knew they were about to clash.
Damian Carter sat at the head of the long glass table, calm and composed, his fingers lightly resting on a neatly arranged stack of documents. Around him sat lawyers, executives, and assistants, all carefully silent, all aware that something bigger than a simple business deal was about to unfold.
Across from him sat Victor Kane.
A man whose reputation carried just as much weight as his wealth but with a darker undertone.
Victor smiled, but there was nothing friendly about it. "Mr. Carter, I trust you've reviewed the contract?"
Damian didn't smile back. "I have."
"And?"
"I won't be signing it."
The words landed like a stone in still water.
A quiet ripple spread across the room.
Victor's smile slowly faded. "I beg your pardon?"
Damian leaned back slightly, his gaze unwavering. "The deal is compromised."
Victor's eyes narrowed. "Compromised how?"
Damian tapped the document in front of him. "Hidden accounts. Illegal transfers. Funds routed through shell companies."
The room went completely silent.
Victor let out a low chuckle, but it didn't reach his eyes. "That's a serious accusation."
"It's not an accusation," Damian replied calmly. "It's evidence."
Victor leaned forward now, his voice dropping. "Do you have any idea what you're doing?"
"Yes."
"You're walking away from a deal worth billions."
"I'm walking away from a liability."
The temperature in the room seemed to drop.
Victor's expression hardened. "Men who stand in my way don't last very long."
Damian didn't react. "Then perhaps you should reconsider your approach."
That was it.
Victor stood abruptly, his chair scraping loudly against the floor. "You just made a very dangerous decision, Carter."
Damian remained seated, unfazed. "I make those every day."
Victor's eyes darkened. "This isn't over."
And then,
BANG!
The sound came from outside. Loud. Sharp. Unmistakable.
Gunfire.
Everything happened at once.
People screamed. Chairs toppled. Glass shattered as another shot rang out, hitting the window across the room.
"Down!" Damian's bodyguard shouted, pulling him out of his chair.
Another shot.
Closer this time.
"Sir, we need to move now!"
Damian was already on his feet, his expression hardening, his mind racing. This wasn't random. This wasn't coincidence.
This was retaliation.
They rushed him out through the emergency exit, footsteps echoing down the hallway as chaos erupted behind them.
Outside, black vehicles were already waiting.
Damian got in without hesitation, the door slamming shut as the car sped off.
Only then did he exhale.
Victor Kane had just declared war.
The next morning, Damian's phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
You should have signed the deal.
His jaw tightened.
Another message came in.
This time, a picture loaded slowly.
Damian's eyes darkened the moment it became clear.
Jason.
Standing outside his school.
Alive. Unharmed. But watched.
"A warning" the message came after the pictures
Damian stood up immediately.
This was no longer about business.
This was about family.
Jason walked into the house later that day, humming softly, completely unaware of the storm waiting for him.
He dropped his bag on the couch. "I'm home Grace, can I get a glass of pineapple juice"
"No late night movement."
Jason froze.
Damian stood across the room, already dressed, already composed, his expression unreadable.
"No movement without my guards."
Jason blinked. "What?"
"I'll personally drop you off at school and pick you up."
Jason stared at him. "Are you serious right now?"
"All of these are not negotiable."
Damian turned and began walking toward the door.
Jason rushed after him. "Can I at least know the reason for all of this? Did you do something again?"
Damian didn't respond.
"Why do I always get caught up in your business?" Jason continued, frustration rising in his voice. "I just want a normal life!"
Damian stopped for a brief second, but he didn't turn.
"That is my final decision."
Then he stepped out and entered his car.
Jason stood there, stunned.
"Unbelievable…"
The next morning felt different.
Heavy.
Jason sat in the passenger seat of Damian's car, arms crossed, staring out the window.
Neither of them spoke.
The silence was thick, uncomfortable.
As the car pulled up in front of the school, it didn't go unnoticed.
Students slowed down. Heads turned. Whispers started immediately.
"That car…"
"Who is that?"
Jason sighed, already regretting everything.
He opened the door quickly, ready to escape.
And then Damian saw her.
Janaya Blake.
Standing under a tree, talking to Maya, completely unaware she was being watched.
Damian's eyes narrowed slightly.
"Is that not the girl that sneaked into my room?"
Jason froze for half a second before recovering. "I don't know what you're talking about."
Then he slammed the door hard.
And walked away.
Damian watched him for a moment before driving off.
But something about that girl lingered.
Jason had barely taken ten steps when a shadow fell over him.
He looked up.
A tall, heavily built man stood in front of him, expression serious.
"I'll be your bodyguard henceforth."
Jason blinked slowly. "You've got to be joking."
"No, sir."
Jason groaned loudly. "Damian, be serious!" he muttered, looking back at the car that had already disappeared.
"Will you also follow me into my lecture rooms?"
"Yes."
Jason dragged both hands through his hair. "This is insane…"
Students were already staring now.
Whispers spread like wildfire.
"Why does he have a bodyguard?"
"Is he some politician's son?"
"Or… wait… is he rich?"
Jason wished the ground would open and swallow him whole.
Inside campus, Janaya felt it almost immediately.
The attention.
The shift.
Something wasn't normal.
Then she saw Jason.
And the man walking right behind him.
Maya grabbed her arm. "Wait… is that a bodyguard?"
Janaya frowned slightly. "Looks like it."
"Since when did Jason become this important?"
"Looks like his billionaire brother is trying to show he cares more now" Cole said as he joined the conversation
Janaya didn't respond.
But something about it didn't feel right.
The lecture hall was worse.
The bodyguard stood by the door, arms crossed, scanning the room like a threat could emerge from anywhere.
Students couldn't focus.
Even the lecturer paused at some point, clearly confused but choosing not to ask questions.
Jason sat stiffly, embarrassed beyond words.
Janaya, seated a few rows away, tried not to look but she noticed everything.
The tension.
The discomfort.
The way Jason avoided eye contact with everyone.
Something was wrong.
Back in his car, Damian drove in silence.
But his thoughts refused to stay in one place.
The threats.
The picture.
The gunshot.
And then,
Janaya.
The memory of her in his room replayed again.
The way she had frozen.
The way she had tried to escape.
The way her eyes had widened when she realized she had been caught.
His grip tightened slightly on the steering wheel.
Why was he thinking about that?
Why did it feel… significant?
His heart rate picked up just a little.
He frowned.
Annoying.
Irrelevant.
He exhaled slowly, forcing his thoughts back to what mattered.
Because somewhere out there…
Someone was watching.
And this time,
They weren't just after him.
Meanwhile, back on campus, things only got worse.
By lunchtime, rumors had already spread.
"Jason has a billionaire brother."
"He's under protection."
"Something dangerous is going on."
Maya leaned closer to Janaya. "This is getting scary."
Janaya nodded slightly. "Yeah…"
She didn't say it out loud, but she couldn't shake the feeling that whatever this was…
It was only just beginning.
