Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: Don't Take a Detour

Chapter 12: Don't Take a Detour

The school courtyard was unusually quiet after the afternoon bell. Sunlight filtered through the trees, scattering golden patches across the brick path.

Tae Kook walked toward the exit, backpack slung loosely over one shoulder, mind already drifting to his lab work. The day's partner assignment loomed in his thoughts, and he couldn't wait to return to his room.

He didn't notice that Han Soo Min was walking a few steps behind, carrying her bag carefully, her usual calm composure intact.

"KOOKY!"

Predictably, Yoo Min Ho appeared beside him, practically bouncing on his feet.

"Wait up! Don't vanish like a shadow again. You're supposed to be going somewhere, right?"

"…Yes. Lab work," Tae Kook muttered flatly.

Min Ho grinned. "Then I shall accompany you! Because every genius needs a loyal… annoying friend."

"…No." Tae Kook didn't even glance at him.

From behind a tree, Ae Rin crouched, notebook in hand, eyes wide.

"…Observation 115: Kooky leaving school. Observation 116: Min Ho chaos level rising. Observation 117: Soo Min following… suspicious." She scribbled furiously. "…Perfect opportunity."

As Tae Kook walked toward the side exit, he didn't notice the small pile of leaves in the path. His foot caught, and he stumbled slightly.

"Whoa!"

Before he could steady himself, a gentle hand gripped his arm.

"…Careful," said a calm voice.

Tae Kook froze. Han Soo Min was there, steadying him with a small, careful gesture. Her fingers brushed his arm lightly, and his heart skipped a beat.

"…I… thanks," he muttered quietly.

"…It's fine," she said softly, her calm gaze meeting his briefly. "…You should watch your step."

Min Ho, now a few feet ahead, turned around dramatically. "OHH! Did you see that? She just touched him! This is historic! Kooky, say something!"

"…Do not speak," Tae Kook muttered, glaring.

Ae Rin, crouched behind the bushes, whispered gleefully:

"…Observation 118: Physical contact achieved. Observation 119: Kooky panicking internally. Observation 120: Comedy gold incoming."

Tae Kook adjusted his bag and took a step forward, careful not to brush against her again. His mind was already racing:

"…She notices everything. Everything. I cannot let my secret life slip. Must stay controlled. Must—"

"…Kooky?" Soo Min's voice pulled him back.

"…Yes?" he asked quietly.

She tilted her head slightly. "…You always seem… in control. Careful. Quiet."

"…I… try," he replied softly. "…Sometimes successfully."

She nodded, almost approvingly. "…It's good. But sometimes it's okay to… let things happen."

Tae Kook froze. "…Let things happen?" he echoed softly.

"…Yes," she said calmly, returning her gaze forward.

Min Ho, meanwhile, had moved closer, clearly unable to resist commenting.

"OOOH! This is tense. She's giving advice now. She's… dangerous, Kooky!"

"…Shut up," Tae Kook muttered. "…Focus."

As they continued walking toward the street, a taxi passed by slowly. Tae Kook's instincts kicked in immediately—calculating distance, possible movement, the safest route across the road. He barely noticed Soo Min stepping in sync beside him, silent, careful, perfectly aware of every step.

"…She's… precise," he thought quietly. "…And calm. Dangerous."

She glanced at him briefly. "…You're… careful too."

Tae Kook's chest tightened. "…Yes," he admitted softly, almost whispering.

From her hiding spot behind a small tree, Ae Rin scribbled furiously:

"…Observation 121: Kooky flustered. Observation 122: Interaction achieved outside class. Observation 123: Danger level skyrocketing. Must continue monitoring."

Min Ho, pretending to be a casual passerby, whispered dramatically:

"Man, this is perfect. Kooky panicking in broad daylight. Incredible."

"…Shut up," Tae Kook muttered again.

Finally, they reached the side street leading toward Tae Kook's apartment block. The air was cooler here, quiet, and peaceful.

"…We're here," Tae Kook said softly. "…You can… go now."

Han Soo Min paused, standing calmly. "…Tomorrow?" she asked.

"…Yes. Tomorrow," he replied, his voice low but certain.

She nodded, then walked away slowly, as composed as ever. Tae Kook watched her leave, feeling… unsettled, intrigued, and undeniably aware of her presence.

Ae Rin, scribbling one last note, whispered:

"…Observation 124: Kooky officially hooked. Observation 125: Soo Min continues to intrigue. Observation 126: Lab work forgotten momentarily. Comedy and chaos guaranteed."

Min Ho leaned over Tae Kook's shoulder, grinning. "See? That wasn't so hard. You survived the outside interaction. You're growing… slowly."

Tae Kook shot him a sharp glare. "…Annoying," he muttered.

And as Tae Kook walked into his apartment, his bag heavier with thoughts, he realized quietly that school had become far more complicated than any experiment he'd ever run in his lab.

And he didn't mind it—at least, not entirely.
