Chapter 3 - Chapter 3- A City of Second Chances

The room seemed to hold its breath.

Elara felt it the moment Alexander Wolfe's eyes landed on her.It wasn't just attention.

It was scrutiny.

The kind that made you feel as if someone could see straight through every layer you tried to hide behind.

For a few seconds, no one spoke.

Then Alexander looked back at Elena.

"You said everything was ready," he said calmly.

Elena straightened immediately. "We had a minor issue with the stage backdrop, but it's being handled."

Alexander's dark gaze flicked briefly toward the stage.

"And how exactly is it being handled?"

Elena hesitated.

Before she could answer, one of the lighting technicians called from above the rig.

"We're testing the projection pattern now!"

The lights dimmed slightly.

A soft textured glow spread across the back wall of the stage, creating the illusion of depth and elegant movement. Gold patterns rippled gently like reflections on water.

The empty stage suddenly looked intentional.

Beautiful.

Alexander watched silently.

After a moment, he gave a small nod.

"That works."

Elena exhaled in relief.

Then Alexander's attention returned to Elara.

"And who suggested that solution?"

The question made several staff members glance at her.

Elara felt suddenly aware that she was standing in the middle of a ballroom full of strangers.

Elena gestured toward her.

"She did."

Alexander studied Elara again.

His gaze was intense but not unfriendly.

Just observant.

"Your name?" he asked.

"Elara Bennett."

His eyebrow lifted slightly.

"And you work here?"

"No," she admitted.

"Then why are you giving instructions to my staff?"

The question wasn't rude.

But it was direct.

Elara hesitated only a second before answering honestly.

"I used to plan events like this."

Alexander tilted his head slightly.

"Used to?"

Elara felt a brief flicker of embarrassment.

"Currently between positions."

A faint murmur moved through a few nearby workers.

Alexander ignored them.

Instead, he stepped closer.

Up close, he was even more intimidating than she expected.

Tall.

Broad-shouldered.

His dark hair was neatly styled, and his sharp jawline gave him a striking, almost dangerous appearance.

But it was his eyes that held her attention.

Cold gray.

Sharp.

The eyes of a man used to control.

"You solved a problem that experienced professionals couldn't fix in two hours," he said.

Elara shrugged lightly.

"Sometimes people overcomplicate things."

For a moment, Alexander said nothing.

Then a faint smirk touched the corner of his mouth.

"I agree."

Elena looked between them nervously.

"Well… thanks to Elara, the event will go on as planned."

Alexander nodded once.

Then he turned toward Elara again.

"Do you need a job?"

The question caught her completely off guard.

"What?"

"A job," he repeated calmly.

Elara blinked.

She had applied to fifteen companies that morning.

None had responded yet.

And now one of the most powerful men in the city was casually offering her work.

"I....."

She hesitated.

Alexander noticed.

"You're unemployed," he said.

"You clearly understand event coordination."

"Yes," she admitted.

"And you're already here."

That was technically true.

Alexander slipped one hand into his pocket.

"Stay."

Elara frowned slightly.

"Stay?"

"Yes."

"For the gala?"

He nodded.

"Observe how my team operates. If you see a problem, fix it."

Elara crossed her arms thoughtfully.

"And what exactly would my title be?"

Alexander's smirk deepened slightly.

"Temporary problem solver."

Elena quickly added, "And you'll be paid, of course."

Elara looked between them.

She had nothing planned today.

No interviews yet.

And honestly… she didn't want to go back to the quiet hotel room alone.

"Fine," she said.

Alexander nodded once.

"Good."

Then he turned to leave.

But before he walked away, he paused.

"Miss Bennett."

"Yes?"

"Don't disappoint me."

With that, he walked toward the far end of the ballroom, his assistants following closely behind.

The room slowly came back to life.

Workers resumed moving.

Technicians adjusted equipment.

Music testing began.

Elena let out a long breath.

"You have no idea how lucky you are."

Elara raised an eyebrow.

"Lucky?"

"Elara," Elena said, lowering her voice, "Alexander Wolfe doesn't offer strangers jobs."

Elara glanced toward the far side of the room where Alexander now stood speaking with several executives.

"He seemed pretty casual about it."

Elena laughed softly.

"That's because he expects excellence."

"And if he doesn't get it?"

Elena shrugged.

"Let's just say people rarely disappoint him twice."

Elara wasn't sure if that was comforting or terrifying.

Still, something about the situation energized her.

For the first time since the disastrous engagement party, she felt focused again.

Purposeful.

She spent the next several hours helping wherever she could.

Reorganizing seating arrangements.

Fixing a catering schedule error.

Adjusting lighting placements for the stage.

Each problem she solved made the event run smoother.

And every now and then, she felt Alexander's eyes on her from across the room.

Watching.

Evaluating.

By early evening, the ballroom had completely transformed.

Soft golden lights glowed from crystal chandeliers.

Elegant tables filled the space.

Tall floral arrangements added color and life.

The charity gala looked spectacular.

Guests began arriving shortly after sunset.

Women in designer gowns.

Men in expensive tuxedos.

The air buzzed with polite conversation and clinking champagne glasses.

Elara stood near the back of the room, observing everything carefully.

"Impressive work today."

The voice behind her was deep and familiar.

She turned.

Alexander Wolfe stood beside her.

Up close again, his presence was just as overwhelming.

"Thank you," she said.

"You adapt quickly," he said.

"I've always been good under pressure."

Alexander studied her expression for a moment.

"You didn't tell me why you're unemployed."

The question surprised her.

"I didn't think it mattered."

"Everything matters."

Elara hesitated.

Then she sighed.

"My fiancé left me."

Alexander's expression didn't change.

"For someone else?"

She nodded.

"My sister."

A brief pause followed.

Then Alexander said something unexpected.

"That's unfortunate."

Elara let out a soft laugh.

"That's one way to describe it."

Alexander watched her carefully.

"You don't seem broken."

Elara lifted her chin slightly.

"I cried last night."

"And today?"

"Today I'm working."

For the first time, Alexander's smile reached his eyes.

"A practical approach."

Elara studied him curiously.

"And what about you?"

"What about me?"

"You seem like someone who doesn't trust people easily."

Alexander's smile faded slightly.

"You're observant."

"I plan events," she replied. "Reading people is part of the job."

Alexander looked out at the crowd.

"Trust is expensive."

"And love?" she asked lightly.

Alexander's eyes returned to hers.

"Even more expensive."

Something about the way he said it made Elara wonder what kind of past he carried.

But before she could ask anything else, Elena rushed toward them.

"Mr. Wolfe, the media is here."

Alexander nodded.

"Of course they are."

He turned toward Elara again.

"You did well today."

"Thank you."

"If you're interested," he continued calmly, "I may have more work for you."

Elara blinked.

"More?"

Alexander nodded.

"I host several events throughout the year."

"And you're offering me a position?"

"I'm offering you an opportunity."

Elara felt something shift inside her chest.

Twenty-four hours ago, her life had collapsed.

Now one of the most powerful men in the city was offering her a new path forward.

"Think about it," Alexander said.

Then he stepped away to greet the arriving reporters.

Elara watched him move confidently through the crowd.

Every person in the room seemed to recognize him.

Respect him.

Fear him.

And somehow… her life had just become connected to his.

She didn't realize it yet.

But meeting Alexander Wolfe was only the beginning.

Because the man who had just offered her an opportunity was also planning something far more dangerous.
