Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: Bonds Strengthen (Part 1)

The morning sunlight spilled across Seoul Station, catching the polished floors and glass doors. Ahn Soo Bin arrived early, her bag slung over her shoulder and a notebook in hand. She had spent the previous evening reviewing all the reports from her first few assignments. She wanted to be ready.

Soo Bin's eyes immediately sought Kim So Hee, who was already reviewing a stack of files at her desk. Even in the early morning, So Hee radiated confidence, her posture perfect, her expression calm yet commanding.

Soo Bin swallowed nervously. Today, she hoped to get more hands-on experience, maybe even assist directly in a minor investigation.

Lim Won Young appeared just as Soo Bin settled at her desk.

"Good morning, trainee extraordinaire," she teased, dropping her bag on the floor. "How's the famous Lieutenant Kim treating you so far?"

Soo Bin rolled her eyes but smiled. "I'm surviving… barely."

Won Young laughed. "Barely, huh? That's a start. But don't worry, you're learning fast. Trust me, I can tell."

Soo Bin glanced toward So Hee again. The lieutenant was now walking toward the staff room, her presence alone commanding attention. Soo Bin tried to focus on her notebook, but it was nearly impossible.

A sudden call came over the intercom:

"Attention, station personnel: a report of a lost dog has come in from the neighborhood near the station. All available officers, please respond."

So Hee's voice immediately cut through the chatter. "Intern, you'll accompany me."

Soo Bin's stomach fluttered. This wasn't a major case, but it was her chance to see So Hee at work up close.

At the neighborhood, chaos had a lighter tone than a typical emergency. Children were crying, neighbors were calling out the dog's name, and the small animal darted between parked cars.

Soo Bin watched as So Hee immediately assessed the situation:

She noted the dog's behavior, spotting its hesitation to cross the street

Observed the crowd dynamics, ensuring no one inadvertently frightened it

Directed the neighbors to form a safe perimeter

"Observation first, action second," So Hee murmured to Soo Bin, who nodded eagerly.

After several minutes of careful maneuvering, So Hee gently coaxed the dog toward her using a small treat from her pocket. The dog cautiously approached, and soon the worried owner ran up to take it in their arms.

Soo Bin exhaled, amazed. So Hee had not only resolved the situation but had done it without anyone panicking or getting hurt.

Back at the station, Shin Jae appeared from nowhere, leaning against the wall with his signature smirk.

"Look at you, trainee. Still in awe of her?" he asked, eyes twinkling.

Soo Bin laughed nervously. "She's… incredible."

Shin Jae chuckled. "Careful, intern. You might get lost in her shadow if you keep staring. Not that I blame you."

Soo Bin glared playfully but couldn't hide the warmth spreading through her chest.

The rest of the day passed with small tasks: organizing files, assisting other officers, and reviewing minor reports. Soo Bin worked diligently, and she began to notice small, subtle ways So Hee cared about the people around her—correcting mistakes gently, encouraging younger officers, and observing situations calmly before acting.

By afternoon, Soo Bin felt more confident. She had learned that being meticulous, calm, and patient could make even small tasks feel meaningful.

Won Young leaned over her desk again. "See? You're getting better every day. Just don't forget—you've got someone watching, too," she added, nodding subtly toward So Hee.

Soo Bin felt her cheeks heat up. "I… I just want to do my best," she said softly.

As the day ended, Soo Bin packed her bag. She glanced once more at So Hee, who was reviewing a case file with perfect focus. That small nod from So Hee during the dog case still lingered in her mind.

It wasn't just approval—it was recognition. And for Soo Bin, that was everything.

Walking out of the station, Soo Bin felt a mix of exhaustion and exhilaration. She was learning, growing, and slowly—without even realizing it—falling deeper for the lieutenant she admired more than anyone.
