Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: The First Night Alone

The forest felt different when you didn't belong to it.

Every sound was sharper.

Every shadow deeper.

Every step… heavier.

Lyra tightened her grip on the strap of her bag as she walked, her senses stretched thin. The familiar boundaries of Nightfall Pack were long behind her now, replaced by wild land that answered to no Alpha.

No rules.

No protection.

Just survival.

Her breath came out slowly as she pushed forward, ignoring the dull ache in her injured arm. The wound had stopped bleeding, but it still burned with every movement.

She couldn't stop.

Not yet.

Not until she was far enough.

Safe enough.

Though she wasn't sure what "safe" meant anymore.

The sun had already begun to set, painting the sky in deep shades of orange and red. Darkness would come soon.

And with it—

Danger.

Lyra swallowed hard.

She needed shelter.

Quickly.

Her eyes scanned the area until she spotted a cluster of large rocks ahead, partially hidden by thick trees. It wasn't much, but it would do.

At least for the night.

By the time she reached it, exhaustion had begun to weigh heavily on her limbs. Her legs felt weak, her body drained from everything that had happened.

She sank down against the cool stone, letting out a slow breath.

Silence settled around her.

Not the peaceful kind.

The kind that made you feel watched.

Alone.

Lyra pulled her knees slightly closer, her fingers brushing against the healing wound on her arm.

"I'll be fine," she murmured to herself.

She had to be.

There was no other option.

Her wolf stirred faintly, restless.

Not afraid.

Not weak.

Just… unsettled.

Lyra closed her eyes briefly, focusing on that feeling.

Something had changed.

Ever since the bond formed… and refused to break.

She wasn't the same.

She could feel it.

In the way her body reacted.

In the way her instincts sharpened.

In the way something inside her felt… awake.

But she didn't understand it.

Didn't know what it meant.

And right now—

She didn't have the luxury to figure it out.

A branch snapped in the distance.

Lyra's eyes flew open.

Her body tensed instantly.

There it was again.

That feeling.

Being watched.

Her heart began to race.

Slowly, she pushed herself up, ignoring the protest from her body.

"Hello?" she called cautiously.

No answer.

Only silence.

Too much silence.

Lyra took a step back.

Then another.

Her senses screamed at her to run.

But before she could—

A figure stepped out from the trees.

Then another.

And another.

Three of them.

Not rogues.

Not quite.

Their scent was different.

Colder.

Stranger.

Lyra's stomach tightened.

"Look what we have here," one of them said, his voice smooth but dangerous. "A lone wolf… far from home."

Lyra straightened, forcing herself not to show fear.

"I'm just passing through," she said carefully.

The man smiled.

It didn't reach his eyes.

"Oh, I don't think so."

The others began to circle slowly.

Not attacking.

Not yet.

Studying her.

Measuring.

Predators deciding how to play with their prey.

Lyra's pulse quickened.

"I don't want trouble," she added.

The man laughed softly.

"Trouble already found you."

Her fingers curled slightly at her sides.

Think.

She needed to think.

They were stronger.

More experienced.

And she was still injured.

Running might not work.

Fighting might not be enough.

But standing still—

Definitely wasn't an option.

"What do you want?" she asked.

The man tilted his head slightly, studying her more closely now.

Then his expression shifted.

Subtly.

Interest replacing amusement.

"Well…" he said slowly. "That's interesting."

Lyra frowned.

"What?"

He stepped closer.

Too close.

Before she could react, he reached out—

And grabbed her wrist.

The moment his skin touched hers—

The world seemed to shift.

The air grew heavy.

The bond inside her flared violently.

Not warm.

Not comforting.

Sharp.

Aggressive.

Wrong.

The man's eyes widened slightly.

"You feel that?" he murmured.

Lyra yanked her hand back instantly, her heart pounding.

"Don't touch me."

But it was too late.

He had already felt it.

Sensed it.

Whatever was inside her…

It wasn't normal.

And now—

They knew it.

The man's smile returned.

Wider this time.

Darker.

"Oh, you're not just any wolf, are you?"

Lyra took a step back.

Then another.

Her instincts screamed louder now.

Danger.

Real danger.

"We're taking her," one of the others said.

"Careful," the first man replied, his gaze still locked on Lyra. "She's special."

The word sent a chill down her spine.

No.

She wasn't staying.

Not here.

Not with them.

Lyra turned—

And ran.

Branches tore at her skin as she pushed forward, ignoring the pain, ignoring the exhaustion, ignoring everything except one thing—

Escape.

Behind her, footsteps followed.

Faster than before.

More determined.

"She's running!"

"Don't lose her!"

Lyra's lungs burned as she forced herself to move faster.

Her body screamed in protest.

Her vision blurred slightly.

But she didn't stop.

Couldn't stop.

Not when she knew what would happen if they caught her.

A sudden burst of energy surged through her.

Stronger than before.

Her wolf.

Awake.

Fully awake.

Lyra gasped as power rushed through her veins, sharp and electric.

Her speed increased.

Her movements sharper.

More controlled.

The distance between her and her pursuers widened slightly.

Hope flickered.

Maybe—

Just maybe—

She could outrun them.

A howl echoed behind her.

Not close.

But not far either.

They weren't giving up.

They wouldn't.

Not now.

Not after what they had felt.

Lyra's chest tightened.

This wasn't just a random encounter.

They wanted her.

And that made everything worse.

Because she didn't know why.

She didn't know what she was becoming.

But whatever it was—

It was attracting the wrong kind of attention.

Her foot hit uneven ground—

She stumbled—

But this time—

She didn't fall.

Her body adjusted instantly, correcting itself mid-step.

Faster.

Stronger.

Different.

Lyra's eyes widened slightly.

What is happening to me?

The question echoed in her mind.

But there was no answer.

Only the sound of pursuit behind her.

And the growing realization that this was only the beginning.

Because somewhere in the darkness—

Forces she didn't understand were already closing in.

And she was right at the center of it.
