Chapter 9 - Curious

Aurora's pov

I wandered down a quiet hallway, away from the main halls, my fingers brushing against the smooth stone walls. My stomach was still full from the breakfast I just had. My mind buzzed with wonder, awe, and a faint, inexplicable tension I couldn't name.

I didn't need to look. I felt Roman's presence behind me silent and patient.

I could feel him, like heat pooling just beyond my skin, something ancient and deep brushing against my chest.

Every step he took closer made my pulse stutter, made the air around me seem warmer, tighter.

"Are you all right?" His voice was low, gentle, almost private, though he was still a few steps away.

I nodded quickly, not trusting my voice. My fingers twisted in my sleeves as the warmth of him seemed to seep into me, making my skin tingle.

He stepped beside me and my chest thundered.

I had never felt anything like this. Not fear, not excitement, not awe... something more, something that made me ache in a way I couldn't explain.

"So tell me little one how are you getting along? Do you like it here?" he asked quietly.

I wasn't sure what to say since it had only been two days since I arrived here and for some weird reason I didn't want to upset him so I lied.

"Yes, I like it a lot here," I said giving him a small smile that didn't reach my eyes.

Truth be told I don't like it here although eversince I arrived the pack and including Roman had been nothing but kind toward me. To be honest I was expecting him to be cold, cruel and ruthless just as how everyone in my village had described him.

But Roman's nothing like that, he's kind, gentle and considerate. He's giving me my space which I'm grateful for.

Roman stepped infront of me, taking my small hand in his larger one. "Aurora," he said, his voice low but etched with concern.

"If you're not happy here you don't have to lie to me."

How did he know I was lying?

"The bond," he said as if reading my mind. "I can feel everything through the bond, your emotions, feelings and everything else."

I swallowed the lump in my throat, tears pricked at my eyes. "I-I miss my family," I admitted, my voice shaky.

"I miss my old life."

Romans eyes softened. "Of course you do and I'm sorry for taking you away from them but I had to Aurora, you're important to me and as time goes by you will understand the bond and," he paused, staring into my eyes.

My breath caught at intensity of his gaze.

"I promise that you will get to see your family soon but not right now,"

"Thank you," I said giving him a small genuine smile.

He smiled back giving my hand a gentle squeeze. "There's nothing I wouldn't do for you little mate."

The air seemed to thrum around me, gentle but electric. My heart hammered, not just from fear, but from the strange, unfamiliar warmth of being seen so completely.

For the first time since coming here I felt something stirring something ancient and terrifying and beautiful-and knowing, deep in my chest, that this was only the beginning.

I was wandering near one of the quieter corridors, still reeling from the strange, constant awareness of Roman, when I noticed her.

The she-wolf I had seen before when Roman introduced me to the pack. The tall, lean, shewolf with silver-streaked hair that caught the morning light. She leaned casually against the wall. Unlike the others, she didn't stare with awe or fear. She smiled, just a hint, but it felt... genuine.

"Hello," she said, her voice soft but confident. "So you're our alpha's mate."

I nodded."Yes, I am," I whispered, unsure if that was an introduction or a warning.

She stepped closer, hands relaxed at her sides. "Don't worry. Not all of us bite," she said with a small laugh. "Some of us... well, we're curious about you. About what it's like."

I blinked. "Curious? About me?"

"Yes," she said simply, tilting her head.

"Some of us never actually interact or get close to a human before and now that I'm standing next to one I must admit I'm a little curious."

"About what?"

"About what it feels like to be human but that can wait. Did Roman give you a tour around the palace?"

I shake my head, nervously fidgeting with the sleeves of my sweater. "He didn't."

Her eyes brightened. "Would you like if I showed you around?"

I hesitated, unsure if I could trust her. But her smile was warm, her tone easy. And something in her confidence made me want to follow.

"Show me?" I asked tentatively.

Her eyes sparkled with amusement.

"Yes I don't really mind since I have nothing better to do. I can show you the Packs training grounds, it's where everyone trains and also we have a game room, movie theater and also a massive indoor swimming pool."

I glanced over my shoulder at the hallway, then back at her. "I... I'd like that. But... will it be safe?"

She shrugged, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "If the Alpha hasn't eaten you yet, I doubt anything else will. Besides..." She glanced down the hallway, voice lowering conspiratorially, "you've got him wrapped around your little finger already. He'll make sure nothing happens to you."

I felt heat rise to my cheeks. "I... I don't know about that," I murmured, suddenly aware of Roman's presence behind me.

The she-wolf grinned knowingly. "Don't worry about him. He's always watching anyway. Come on. I'll show you the way."

I followed her cautiously through winding corridors, past carved archways and tall windows where sunlight spilled onto the stone floors. Every step made my pulse quicken-not just from fear, but from excitement. I had never been allowed to see anything like this, and now... I was part of it, in a small way.

At last, we emerged onto a wide terrace overlooking the training grounds. Below, Lycans sprinted, leaped, and sparred with ferocious skill. Their movements were fluid, precise, almost animalistic, yet controlled power and grace intertwined.

I gasped. "They... they're incredible," I whispered.

The she-wolf nudged me gently. "Told you. And you get to watch up close. Don't be afraid. They're more curious about you than you think."

I swallowed hard, taking in the scene, every sense tingling with awe and fear and a strange thrill. And for the first time, I realized... maybe there was a place for me here.

Somewhere in this wild, terrifying, extraordinary world, I could belong.

And perhaps, just perhaps, not all the Lycans were meant to scare me.
