Time stands still for no one. The two little friends from Shiulipur village—Rahul and Karim—slowly started growing up. Their childhood days of play had now diminished considerably, replaced by studies and thoughts of the future.
As the time for the secondary exams approached, they realized that the path of life would not be as easy as before. Rahul was as brave and dreamy as before, but now there was a sense of responsibility in his eyes. On the other hand, Karim was as focused as before, but there was pressure from his family.
Rahul's father was a farmer. He always wanted his son to do something big, so that he could get out of this life of poverty. Karim's father was ill, so many of the responsibilities of the family fell on his shoulders.
One afternoon, they were sitting by the pond. A light breeze was blowing, and the soft evening light was all around.
Rahul said, "I want to go to the city to study. I will get admission in a big college."
Karim was silent for a while and said, "Good idea… but I may not be able to go."
"Why?" Rahul asked in surprise.
"You know the situation at home. I have to stay here."
Rahul was silent for a while. Then he said,
"Wherever you are, we will move forward together. You continue your studies, I will help you."
These words gave Karim new courage.
The exam day came. They both worked hard. The exam results were out—both of them passed with good marks. A wave of joy swept through the village.
Rahul got the opportunity to get admission in a good college in the city. The farewell day was very emotional.
Standing at the station, Karim said,
"If you go, I will be alone."
Rahul smiled and said,
"You fool! There is a phone call, a letter. And I will come back."
The train left. Karim stood on the platform until the train disappeared from sight.
Life in the city was completely different. New people, a new environment, and the pressure of competition—everything started to reshape Rahul. Initially, it was very difficult for him, but he did not give up.
On the other hand, Karim continued his studies from the village. He studied every night and did his homework during the day. Sometimes he taught young children in the village so that he could earn some money.
Distance did not weaken their friendship, but rather strengthened it. They talked regularly, encouraging each other.
One day, Karim said on the phone,
"I will become a teacher one day, you see."
Rahul replied,
"And I will create something that will change our village too."
Their dreams were no longer small—they started thinking about the whole village as well as their own lives.
Thus began a new chapter in their lives—a story of struggle, hard work, and moving forward in the path of their dreams.
