Chapter 4 - CHAPTER 3 — The Emperor’s Forbidden Chambers

The emperor's private chambers were nothing like the grand halls Lin Yue had been dragged through earlier. They were quieter, darker, warmer — a place meant not for ceremony, but for secrets.

Silk curtains swayed gently from the open windows. A brazier glowed in the corner, filling the room with the scent of sandalwood and amber. The atmosphere was intimate, almost suffocating.

Lin Yue stood frozen near the door, unsure whether to bow, kneel, or run.

Emperor Jin Longwei watched her in silence.

He didn't sit.

He didn't speak.

He simply observed her — as if memorizing every breath she took.

Finally, he moved.

Not toward her, but toward a small table where a teapot steamed. He poured a cup, the motion slow and deliberate, then held it out to her.

"Drink."

Lin Yue hesitated. "Your Majesty… I don't—"

His eyes narrowed. "You think I would poison you?"

"No! I just—"

"Then drink."

His tone left no room for refusal.

Her hands trembled as she accepted the cup. The tea was warm, fragrant, calming. She took a small sip, and the emperor's gaze softened — barely, but enough to unsettle her.

"You fear me," he said quietly.

Lin Yue swallowed. "Everyone seems to fear you."

A faint smile touched his lips. "Good. Fear keeps them obedient."

He stepped closer, and she instinctively stepped back — only to hit the wall behind her. His hand lifted, not to touch her, but to rest against the wall beside her head, trapping her in place.

"But you," he murmured, "you look at me differently."

Her breath caught. "I… don't know how to look at an emperor."

"Then look at me as a man."

Her heart skipped.

His face was inches from hers now, his breath warm against her cheek. His eyes were dark, intense, searching.

"You appeared in my palace without a past," he whispered. "Without fear. Without lies. You are the first person in years who does not tremble when I speak."

"I'm trembling now," she whispered back.

He leaned even closer. "Not from fear."

Her cheeks burned. She didn't know whether to deny it or run.

Before she could speak, the doors burst open.

A eunuch fell to his knees, forehead pressed to the floor. "Your Majesty! Forgive the intrusion, but the Empress Dowager demands your presence in the Hall of Ancestral Rites!"

The emperor's jaw tightened. His eyes flicked to Lin Yue — possessive, reluctant, unwilling to leave her.

"Tell her I will come," he said coldly.

The eunuch scrambled away.

Jin Longwei turned back to Lin Yue, his expression darkening.

"You will stay here," he ordered. "No one enters this room. No one touches you. If anyone asks who you are…"

He paused, then lifted her chin with a single finger.

"Tell them you belong to me."

Her breath hitched.

He released her slowly, as if it pained him to do so, then turned and strode out of the room, his robe sweeping behind him like a shadow.

The doors closed.

Silence fell.

Lin Yue pressed a hand to her racing heart.

She had been in this world for less than an hour, and already the most feared man in the empire had claimed her.

Outside, she could hear whispers — hurried footsteps, hushed voices, the palace waking to the news that the emperor had taken a mysterious woman into his chambers.

Inside, she stood alone, trembling.

Not from fear.

But from the terrifying certainty that her life had just changed forever.
