Chapter 4 - chapter 4

The silence after the tremor didn't last long.

It never did in a city like this.

Elijah was the first to recover.

"As impressive as that was," he said smoothly, adjusting his cufflinks as though the house hadn't just bent to someone else's will, "displays of power tend to invite… complications."

[Translation: You are attracting enemies.]

"Yeah," Aria muttered. "I figured that part out."

Klaus pushed off the table, clearly energized now.

"Oh, let them come," he said, a dangerous gleam in his eyes. "It's been dreadfully dull lately."

Rebekah rolled her eyes.

"You say that every time right before things go horribly wrong."

Aria blinked.

"…Comforting."

Before anyone could say anything else—

The air shifted.

It was subtle.

To most, unnoticeable.

But to Aria?

It was like someone had dropped ink into water.

Dark magic.

Old.

Watching.

She straightened slightly.

"…We have company."

Klaus smiled.

"Of course we do."

A slow clap echoed from the entrance.

Not rushed.

Not impressed.

Measured.

A figure stepped into view.

And the moment they did—

Even the Originals stilled.

"Always making an entrance, Niklaus," said Marcel Gerard, his voice calm but carrying authority.

Aria glanced between them.

"…Let me guess," she murmured. "Another problem."

[Correction: Local authority figure. Self-proclaimed king.]

"…Ah. So a bigger problem."

Marcel's gaze shifted to her.

Sharp. Assessing.

Unlike the Mikaelsons, he didn't look curious.

He looked… calculating.

"You must be the reason every witch in the city just lost their minds," he said.

Aria gave a small shrug.

"I get that a lot."

There was a pause.

Then Marcel smiled slightly.

Not friendly.

Not hostile.

Strategic.

"You're new," he said. "Which means you don't understand how things work here."

The System chimed.

[New Faction Identified: The French Quarter Vampires]

[Leader: Marcel Gerard]

[Status: Evaluating You]

Aria crossed her arms.

"And I'm guessing you're about to explain it to me?"

Marcel took a step closer.

"In this city," he said evenly, "power isn't just about what you can do. It's about who allows you to do it."

Klaus scoffed.

"Oh, do stop posturing."

But Aria didn't look at Klaus.

She kept her eyes on Marcel.

And then—

She smiled.

"…That sounds like a rule."

[Warning: You are about to break something important.]

"Good."

The room seemed to darken slightly as her magic stirred.

Not violently.

Not yet.

But enough.

Aria stepped forward.

Now standing directly in front of Marcel.

"And what happens," she asked softly, "when I decide I don't need permission?"

Silence.

Tension snapped tight between them.

The Mikaelsons watched closely.

Because this?

This mattered.

Marcel's expression didn't change.

But his eyes hardened.

"Then," he said quietly, "you become a problem I have to deal with."

The System pulsed.

[New Quest Triggered: Challenge the King]

[Objective: Establish Superiority Over Marcel Gerard]

[Difficulty: Easy]

Aria almost laughed.

"…You know what?" she said.

"Let's skip the slow part."

And then—

She moved.

Not physically.

Not in any way Marcel—or anyone—could predict.

The space around him folded.

Just slightly.

Enough.

Suddenly—

Marcel wasn't standing where he was before.

He was across the room.

Pinned.

Not by hands.

Not by magic he could see.

But by reality itself pressing down on him.

The floor cracked beneath his feet.

The air grew heavy.

And Aria?

She hadn't even moved from her spot.

Rebekah's eyes widened.

"…Okay," she whispered. "I take it back. She's worse than a disaster."

Elijah's gaze sharpened.

"Fascinating…"

Klaus—

Klaus looked delighted.

Marcel strained against the invisible force, jaw tightening.

"What—are—you?"

Aria tilted her head slightly.

"Still figuring that out," she said.

Then, after a pause—

She released him.

The pressure vanished instantly.

Marcel caught himself, stepping back, breathing steady—but his eyes?

Different now.

Not dismissive.

Not superior.

Cautious.

[Quest Complete: Challenge the King]

[Reward: Dominance Established (Local)]

[Reputation Updated: Dangerous Unknown]

Aria exhaled.

"…That felt unnecessary."

[It was efficient.]

Marcel straightened slowly, never taking his eyes off her.

"This isn't over," he said.

Aria smiled faintly.

"It doesn't have to be."

Another pause.

Then Marcel turned—

And walked out.

The moment he was gone—

The room shifted again.

Not with tension.

With realization.

Rebekah crossed her arms.

"Well," she said, "you just declared yourself to the entire city."

Elijah nodded slightly.

"Indeed."

Klaus stepped closer to Aria, grin returning in full force.

"And I must say," he murmured, "I'm starting to enjoy having you here."

Aria glanced at him.

"…You say that now."

[Hidden Event Progress: The City Reacts]

[Status: Escalating]

Outside—

Whispers spread.

Fast.

Uncontrollable.

A witch stronger than the covens.

A force that humbled Marcel.

Someone even the Mikaelsons weren't controlling.

And deep beneath New Orleans—

That ancient presence stirred again.

Stronger this time.

Closer to waking.

Because Aria wasn't just changing the balance of power.

She was waking things…

that should have stayed buried
