Chapter 3 - CHAPTER THREE

The ensuing weeks were filled with whispers and strange stares as Olivia navigated the social environment with renewed confidence. Sebastian, by her side, appeared to enjoy the opportunity to publicly express his affections.

He described her not only as his "former" fiancée, but also as his closest friend and confidante, the woman who had helped him traverse a web of deception. Meanwhile, Olivia found herself captivated by Sebastian's gentler side. He wasn't just the stoic Duke, he was a guy with a deep interest in history, as evidenced by his extensive library, and a startling liking for rescued dogs, as discovered during a visit to a local animal shelter.

Their shared experiences during the "covert cupid" ruse had created a closeness that went beyond simple attraction.

One evening, at a particularly dreary social affair, Olivia was surrounded by a very pushy socialite, a woman with a daughter who had her sights set on the Duke. As the woman went on about her daughter's successes, Olivia felt a familiar touch on her shoulder.

"Excuse me," Sebastian respectfully interrupted, his tone slightly amused.

"I believe Miss Olivia and I have a pressing engagement to attend to right away." He continued.

Olivia, repressing a smile, played along. "Your grace, indeed. We don't want to be late."

They exited the stuffy ballroom with a flourish, the weight of interested eyes following them. Sebastian led her outside, and the chilly night air was a wonderful change.

"Thank you for that," Olivia replied, letting out a sincere laugh.

Sebastian grinned. "Anytime. Aside from that, I prefer our own company."he added.

They walked through the beautiful garden, the site of their first awkward encounters and now a location full of shared memories. A comfortable silence fell between them, broken only by the chirping of crickets.

"Are you happy, Olivia?" Sebastian inquired, his voice lower and more vulnerable than she had ever heard before.

Olivia paused, then turned to face him. The moonlight cast a beautiful shine on his face, highlighting the lines etched around his eyes, which spoke of both past hardships and present joy. She knew that happiness was an understatement.

"More than I ever thought possible," she confessed, her voice barely audible.

Sebastian moved closer, reaching out to tuck a stray curl behind her ear. His touch caused a shudder down her spine.

"Me too," he said softly, his gaze finding hers.

The distance between them appeared to shorten before either of them could say anything else, Sebastian leaned in, his lips meeting hers in a delicate, hesitant kiss. The kiss was a revelation, a gradual eruption of feelings that had been seething beneath the surface.

Olivia realized this wasn't a performance as they pushed away, breathless and exhilarated. This was real. The charade was over, but their story had only begun. The future, like the next act in a play, was full of possibilities, a love formed in the crucible of a phony engagement, and an exciting mystery.

Olivia and Sebastian's growing affair spread like wildfire through social circles, creating a far more pleasurable controversy than the last "engagement." While some gossiped and speculated, the majority were truly delighted for the Duke, who had finally found love, and Olivia, the talented actress who had won his heart.

Life at the Montgomery estate, which had previously been stiflingly formal, took on a new liveliness. Olivia's contagious zeal persuaded Sebastian to hold open-air theater nights on the grounds, much to the joy of the workers and the nearby peasants.

Sebastian, in turn, introduced her to the realm of historical study, with their evenings spent poring over ancient manuscripts in his library, a crackling fireplace providing a warm light to their laughter and shared discoveries.

One rainy afternoon, while exploring a forgotten area of the large library, Olivia discovered a hidden chamber beneath a seemingly common place. Inside, she discovered a bundle of faded letters tied with a worn ribbon. Curiosity piqued, and she started reading.

The letters were addressed to Sebastian's great-grandmother, who was known for her adventurous spirit and rebellious attitude. They told about a hidden area within the mansion that was claimed to contain a valuable family heirloom, a sapphire necklace with a powerful curse.

Olivia was intrigued and shared her discovery with Sebastian. His eyes lit up with enthusiasm. The prospect of a hidden treasure and a family mystery was far too appealing to resist. Together, they interpreted cryptic clues in the letters, starting on a lighthearted treasure hunt within Sebastian's house.

Their search took them through dusty attics, dark corridors, and abandoned areas of the estate. They solved puzzles etched into ancient furniture and followed cryptic patterns on old pictures. The investigation became a new adventure, a shared secret that strengthened their friendship.

After days of searching, they discovered a hidden room beneath a tapestry in a long-abandoned wing of the home. Inside, a dusty casket housed the famed sapphire necklace, its blue stones shining faintly in the low light.

As Olivia reached out to touch it, a blast of wind slammed the window shut, bringing the room into darkness. A concealed compartment in the chest creaked open, revealing rolled-up parchment. With shaky hands, they lit a lamp and unfolded the document.

It was a confession and revelation that sent shivers down their spines. Sebastian's cousin, Beatrice, was the "covert cupid," the mastermind behind Clara's attack and Beatrice's manipulation which they knew of after the previous incident but was still doubting if she could do such things.

Beatrice had contrived the entire hoax, motivated by envy and a warped sense of entitlement, with the goal of discrediting Sebastian and claiming the estate for herself. The discovery overshadowed their newfound delight. The woman they assumed they knew, the seemingly humble relative, was a master of deception. Olivia felt a sting of betrayal, a reminder of the evil that could exist beneath the surface.

Sebastian, on the other hand, fixed his focus on her and spoke firmly.

"We'll get through this," he said. "Together."

They did it jointly. Beatrice was exposed, and her claims to the estate were dismissed. The experience, however, marked a turning point in their relationship. It tested their trust and strengthened their bond, resulting in a love based not only on romance, but also on shared adventure and steadfast support.

The sapphire necklace, which was originally a symbol of a potential curse, became a treasured memento of their adventure. They had not only discovered a secret treasure but also realized the genuine value they held in each other.

Their love story, which began with a bogus engagement and an exciting mystery, has become a monument to the power of courage, trust, and the unforeseen turns that life can bring.

Months passed, and Olivia and Sebastian prospered in their newfound romance. The sting of Beatrice's treachery had subsided, replaced by a relaxed domesticity.

Olivia continued her acting career, pursuing opportunities with Sebastian's enthusiastic support. He, in turn, shocked her with his renewed enthusiasm for the theater, frequently accompanying her to opening nights and providing incisive approval.

One bright autumn evening, Sebastian came back home from a meeting with a furrow in his brow.

"There's trouble brewing," he said, his tone grim.

"A neighboring man, Lord Ashtoncroft, has been encroaching on my property all this while."

"He claims a contested border, and tensions are increasing among farmers involved." He exclaimed.

Olivia, ever the pragmatist, proposed a peaceful resolution. "Perhaps a little negotiation is in order," she suggested.

"There must be some historical document or map that clarifies the border." She suggested.

Sebastian exhaled. "We checked all the archives, but nothing conclusive was found there. Lord Ashtoncroft is a bully, and I fear he may turn to violence." He explained.

The potential of a land conflict placed doubt on their contentment. Days went into weeks, with difficult conversations and unsuccessful attempts to locate the missing document.

Olivia got an unusual delivery one evening while Sebastian was away for another meeting. Inside was a rolled-up piece of paper fastened with a familiar red ribbon, the same ribbon that had graced Sebastian's great-grandmother's letters.

A message attached simply stated, "The answer lies where it all began."

Olivia was intrigued, and her mind raced. Where did it all start? She asked herself.

The solution struck her like a bolt of lightning, the hidden room where they discovered the sapphire necklace, and Beatrice's confession. Olivia rushed to the abandoned place, where she found the concealed chamber once more. As she unfolded the document within, her heart raced with eagerness.

It was a map that clearly depicted the disputed line and marked a specific area on the Montgomery estate with a large red X. Olivia felt a burst of excitement.

"This could be the missing element they require" she whispered to herself.

But a niggling suspicion persisted. "Why was this document buried?"

"And who delivered it to her anonymously?" She questioned herself again.

Just as she was ready to pocket the map, the door creaked open. Sebastian stood there, his face frozen in shock. In his palm, he had a familiar crimson ribbon.

"Olivia," he said, his voice a bit high. "What are you doing here?" And what do you have in your hand?"

Olivia paused, torn between her desire to help and the realization that Sebastian would misinterpret her actions.

She muttered, "I found a map, Sebastian."

Sebastian's expression tightened before she could finish explaining. "A map leading to a hidden treasure, perhaps?" he inquired, his voice tinged with a bitterness she had never heard before.

Olivia's heart fell. "Did he see the note?"

"Did he assume she was after some buried treasure?" She asked herself.

"No, it's not like that!" she insisted."

Then explain," Sebastian shouted, his eyes full of rage and hurt.

Olivia, confused and offended by his charge, chose silence. Sebastian stormed out of the room, misinterpreting Olivia's silence as affirmation, leaving her alone with the map and a mounting sense of betrayal. The misunderstanding, which stemmed from a well-intentioned desire to assist, had put a wedge between them.

Their previously free communication had given way to a wall of skepticism. The land conflict with Lord Ashtoncroft drifted into the background as Olivia and Sebastian dealt with the more fundamental issue of trust.

Olivia knew she needed to explain, but Sebastian wouldn't listen. The love story, which had begun as a thrilling mystery, now faced its biggest challenge which is a test of communication and the delicate dance of trust that binds two hearts together.
