Chapter 7 - Chapter 7 — Home Room 1

Home Room 1 was smaller than the assembly hall, but the atmosphere carried a different kind of weight.

Thirty cadets filled tiered seating that curved toward a central platform. A digital display hovered above, cycling through roster names and preliminary levels.

David scanned the room.

A few crests were visible — subtle embroidery on sleeves, rings bearing family sigils, posture that suggested training began long before sixteen.

Most of the room, however, looked like him.

Unknown.

Waiting.

The door at the front slid open.

Commander Elara Vance entered without ceremony.

The room straightened immediately.

She removed her gloves slowly, setting them on the desk at the center of the platform. The thin scar along her cheek was more visible here, a pale line against steady features.

"I am Commander Vance," she said. "For the next year, you answer to me."

Her voice wasn't raised.

It didn't need to be.

"You were measured today," she continued. "Those numbers are not ceilings. They are baselines."

Her gaze moved across the room.

It paused, briefly, on David.

He felt it.

Then it moved on.

"Some of you come from established houses," she said. "Some of you do not. In this room, that distinction means nothing."

A few cadets shifted.

"Power without discipline is a liability. Discipline without growth is useless. You will develop both."

The digital display shifted.

HOME ROOM 1 — INITIAL ROSTER

Names populated in order.

Selene Solaryn — Level 3

Alder Sylvryn — Level 2

Blood Veydris — Level 3

Castiel Nightvale — Level 3

Nyra Vale — Level 2

David Wyn — Level 1

Murmurs rippled softly.

David felt the weight of his number again.

Vance spoke over it.

"Squads will be assigned after tactical profiling tomorrow. For now, understand this."

She folded her hands behind her back.

"Your first off-world deployment will occur before the end of this term."

That quieted the room.

"You are not here to compete for applause."

Her gaze hardened slightly.

"You are here to survive."

Castiel leaned slightly toward David and muttered under his breath.

"Well. That's comforting."

David didn't look at him.

"Shut up, Cas."

Castiel glanced sideways.

"You started it, D."

Nyra bit her lip to suppress a laugh.

Commander Vance's eyes flicked toward their row.

All three of them straightened instantly.

A faint, almost imperceptible shift passed through her expression.

Not annoyance.

Awareness.

"Orientation concludes here," she said. "Training begins at 0600."

Chairs scraped softly as cadets stood.

David exhaled.

First day.

Measured.

Classified.

Observed.

And apparently—

Nicknamed.
