Chapter 4 - Chapter 4 - "Unexpected Visitors"

Chapter 4 - "Unexpected Visitors"

The clip appeared on a Tuesday.

Hana was eating breakfast — rice and leftover vegetable soup — when her phone buzzed with a notification from a VTuber community account she followed. She picked it up without much expectation, assuming it was just another weekly roundup post.

It was not.

The post read: "This new indie VTuber drawing her own chat members live is genuinely one of the most wholesome things I have seen this month. Watch this."

Below the text was a thirty-second clip — someone had captured the moment she revealed StellarDust99's portrait, including the chat's reaction and her own laughter.

The post had 4,200 likes.

Hana put down her spoon.

She picked up her phone again. Checked the number. Still 4,200. She refreshed. 4,318.

"Oh," she said, to nobody.

She opened her channel page. Her subscriber count — which had been sitting comfortably at 203 since the weekend — now read 489.

She watched it for thirty seconds.

It changed to 501.

She put the phone face-down on the table and finished her breakfast very deliberately, chewing each bite with the focused calm of someone trying very hard not to spiral.

It did not fully work.

By the time she went live that evening, her subscriber count was 1,847.

The stream began and the viewer count shot to 340 within the first three minutes. Hana stared at the number from behind her avatar and felt something she had not anticipated: a flicker of anxiety.

This was not the cozy group of familiar names she had grown comfortable with. This was a crowd. A real crowd. And crowds are unpredictable.

She took a breath.

"Good evening, everyone." Her voice came out steady. "I... see we have some new faces tonight. Welcome. I am Lumina, and I am currently trying very hard not to look overwhelmed, with mixed results."

The chat moved fast. Much faster than she was used to.

StellarDust99: LUMINA THE CLIP IS EVERYWHERE

moonbyte: she went semi-viral. iconic.

zzznocturn: how are you holding up

newuser_raincloud: hi just found you from the clip!!

pixelwatcher: same! that clip was so cute

observer_88: is she doing the drawing thing again tonight

CelestialKai: lumina take your time. breathe.

She read Kai's message and felt her shoulders drop — she had not realized she was holding them up near her ears.

"Thank you, Kai," she said quietly. Then, louder: "Okay. For everyone who is new — hello! I am so happy you found your way here. I want to address something before we start tonight's stream."

The chat slowed slightly, sensing a genuine moment.

"I saw the clip. I saw the numbers. And I want to be honest with you — it is a little scary. Not in a bad way, I think. But last week I was talking to forty people I was beginning to recognize, and now there are over three hundred of you. That is a big change very fast."

StellarDust99: that's completely valid!!

moonbyte: we're still here lumina. the regulars aren't going anywhere

newuser_raincloud: that's honestly really refreshing to hear. most streamers just pretend to be fine

pixelwatcher: she's so real lol I like her already

"I appreciate that," Hana said. "And to the new people — thank you for giving me a chance. I promise I will not be perfect. I will probably do embarrassing things on stream regularly. But I will always be honest, and I will always actually try."

observer_88: honestly that's all I ask of any streamer

CelestialKai: that's literally your whole brand already and it's working

She had planned a normal Stardew session, but twenty minutes in, something else happened.

A username appeared in chat that made several people immediately react.

NovaSpark_VT: hey lumina! love the energy. big fan of the clip

StellarDust99: WAIT IS THAT

moonbyte: NOVASPARK?? THE novaspark??

zzznocturn: okay I was not expecting this tonight

Hana paused her game. "I'm sorry — who is NovaSpark? I see people reacting."

pixelwatcher: she's a VTuber! pretty big one, like 80k subs

newuser_raincloud: novaspark is really popular in the cozy gaming community

NovaSpark_VT: lol don't make it weird guys. I'm just here as a viewer. lumina your art stream concept is genuinely creative, I loved watching it

Hana blinked. An established VTuber — with 80,000 subscribers — was sitting in her chat, leaving a compliment.

She handled it with admirable composure, which is to say she made a small squeaking sound that her microphone absolutely captured.

StellarDust99: LUMINA THE NOISE

moonbyte: she squeaked. she actually squeaked.

"I — yes. That was me. That happened." She cleared her throat. "NovaSpark, thank you so much. Genuinely. I have watched some of your streams — your commentary style is really something I admire."

NovaSpark_VT: that means a lot! you've got something special here. keep going.

NovaSpark_VT: also please never stop being scared of stardew slimes. it's incredible.

The whole chat laughed — new viewers and old ones together, briefly united by the same joke.

StellarDust99: the slime fear is CANON now

zzznocturn: it was always canon

"It is not irrational," Hana said, with great dignity. "The slimes are aggressive."

After the stream, when the numbers had settled and the chat had emptied, Hana sat at her desk and looked at her subscriber count: 2,341.

In one day, she had gained more subscribers than in her entire first week.

She had expected to feel excited. And she did, partly. But under the excitement was something quieter and more complex — a sense of responsibility she had not felt before.

These were not just numbers. They were people. Actual people who had seen something in that thirty-second clip and thought: yes, I want more of that.

She opened her planning notebook and wrote a single line at the top of a fresh page:

Do not abandon what made them show up in the first place.

She underlined it. Then she underlined it again.

Below that, she wrote something else — smaller, almost to herself:

NovaSpark said "keep going." I will.

She closed the notebook, turned off her desk lamp, and went to bed before midnight for the first time in a week.
