Chapter 30 - Hunter and Prey

The Night Vengeance Began

The face on the screen didn't lie.

Ryan stared at it.

Burning it into his memory.

The lorry driver.

The man who destroyed everything.

"Where is he?" Ryan asked.

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

Victor hesitated, glancing at Don Alessandro.

A silent question.

Alessandro gave a small nod.

Victor tapped the keyboard.

"Dockyard district," he said. "He's been moving shipments for small-time crews. Nothing major."

Ryan turned.

"That's enough."

He was already walking.

"Ryan."

Don Alessandro's voice stopped him.

Ryan didn't turn back.

"You're not ready to act on emotion," Alessandro said.

Ryan's fists clenched.

"This isn't emotion."

A pause.

"This is unfinished business."

Silence filled the room.

Then—

A slow smile from Alessandro.

"Fine," he said. "But you won't go alone."

Ryan finally turned.

Marco stepped forward.

Of course.

"The enforcer will go with you," Alessandro continued. "Make sure you don't make mistakes."

Ryan didn't argue.

He didn't care.

As long as the man died.

Night swallowed the dockyard.

Rusting containers.

Dim lights.

Shadows stretching like claws across the ground.

Ryan moved through it like one of them.

Silent.

Focused.

Marco followed behind, heavy but controlled.

"Don't rush it," he muttered. "You mess this up, you don't get a second chance."

Ryan didn't respond.

His eyes scanned everything.

Every movement.

Every sound.

Then—

He saw him.

The lorry driver stood near a truck, talking to two men.

Laughing.

Like nothing had happened.

Ryan's vision narrowed.

His heartbeat slowed.

Everything else…

Faded.

"That's him," Marco said quietly.

Ryan already knew.

He stepped forward.

"Hey!"

The driver turned.

Confusion.

Then—

Recognition.

Fear.

"You—"

Ryan didn't let him finish.

He closed the distance fast.

Too fast.

The first punch landed hard.

The man hit the ground.

Ryan was on him instantly.

Punch after punch.

Years of pain.

Of anger.

Of loss.

Unleashed.

"YOU REMEMBER ME?!" Ryan's voice broke through the night.

The driver struggled, bleeding.

"I—I didn't—!"

Ryan grabbed his collar, dragging him up.

"You killed him."

The man shook his head frantically.

"I was paid! I didn't know—!"

Ryan froze.

Paid.

Of course.

His grip tightened.

"Who?" Ryan demanded.

The driver hesitated.

Wrong move.

Ryan slammed him against the truck.

"WHO?!"

"Y-Your family!" the man gasped. "Your aunt—your uncle—they paid me!"

Ryan went still.

Even though he already knew…

Hearing it again—

Made it real.

Behind him, Marco watched.

Interested.

"Please…" the driver begged. "I told you everything—just let me go—"

Ryan stared at him.

This was it.

The moment.

Revenge.

His finger tightened on the trigger.

Then—

A voice.

Soft.

"Ryan… don't."

He froze.

Sofia.

She stepped out of the shadows.

Eyes locked on him.

"Once you do this," she said quietly, "there's no going back."

Ryan's jaw tightened.

"There's no going back anyway."

A tear slipped down the driver's face.

Ryan didn't look at him anymore.

Just—

Pulled the trigger.

The gunshot echoed.

And just like that—

It was over.

Ryan stood there.

Breathing steady.

No relief.

No peace.

Just…

Silence.

Sofia watched him.

Something unreadable in her eyes.

Marco smirked slightly.

"Not bad," he said. "You're learning."

Ryan didn't respond.

Because deep down—

He knew.

This wasn't justice.

This was the beginning of something darker.
