Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Boy Who Was Not Chosen

In this world, everything was decided at sixteen.

Not talent.

Not effort.

Not even bloodline.

Only awakening.

The sky above Aether City shimmered with a pale silver glow, as if reality itself was watching.

Thousands of students stood in the grand plaza, arranged in perfect rows. Their uniforms were identical—black coats with silver linings—but their expressions were anything but.

Excitement.

Fear.

Desperation.

Today was Awakening Day.

A floating crystal tower hovered above the plaza, rotating slowly. It was known simply as the System Core, a relic left behind from an unknown ancient era.

No one knew who created it.

But everyone knew what it did.

At the age of sixteen, the System would judge you.

And grant you a Class.

"Next! Step forward!"

A boy nervously walked up to the platform. His hands trembled as he placed them on the crystal pedestal.

For a moment—nothing.

Then—

[Class Assigned: Flame Warrior]

A burst of red light engulfed him.

Cheers erupted.

"Flame Warrior! That's a combat class!"

"He's set for life!"

The boy fell to his knees, laughing in relief.

At the back of the crowd stood Arin Vale.

Quiet.

Unnoticed.

Average in every possible way.

He watched the ceremony with a calm expression, though his eyes revealed something deeper.

Not fear.

Not hope.

Something closer to… expectation.

"Arin," a voice called beside him.

He turned. A girl with sharp eyes and tied-back hair crossed her arms.

"Don't tell me you're not nervous."

"Should I be?" Arin asked.

Lena scoffed. "Only your entire future depends on this."

"I'll manage."

"That's what you always say."

More students stepped forward.

[Class Assigned: Iron Defender]

[Class Assigned: Wind Archer]

[Class Assigned: Healing Priest]

Each announcement changed a life.

Each light determined a destiny.

Then—

"Next. Arin Vale."

The voice echoed across the plaza.

For the first time, the murmurs died down slightly.

Not because Arin was special.

But because he wasn't.

No achievements.

No noble background.

No expectations.

Lena nudged him. "Go."

Arin stepped forward.

Each footstep felt strangely heavy, though he couldn't tell why.

As he approached the pedestal, the System Core above seemed to rotate… just slightly faster.

No one else noticed.

He placed his hand on the crystal.

Cold.

Silent.

Still.

Seconds passed.

Nothing happened.

The crowd began whispering.

"Why isn't it activating?"

"Is he… defective?"

"Impossible. Everyone awakens something."

Arin frowned slightly.

Then—

The world went dark.

Not physically.

But inside his mind.

A voice echoed.

Not mechanical like the others.

Not emotionless.

Something deeper.

[Unique Condition Detected]

[Analyzing…]

[Compatibility: Absolute]

Arin's eyes widened.

"What…?"

[Hidden Class Unlocked]

[Class Assigned: Skills Ruler]

No light burst.

No dramatic effect.

Just silence.

Back in reality, the crystal flickered weakly.

A faint, almost invisible glow surrounded Arin's hand.

The examiner frowned.

"System… confirm class."

A pause.

Then, in a dull tone:

[Class Assigned: Unknown]

The crowd erupted in confusion.

"Unknown?"

"That's not a real class!"

"Did the system glitch?"

The examiner looked annoyed. "Step down. You will be evaluated later."

Arin removed his hand.

But something felt different.

Very different.

As he stepped off the platform, a translucent screen appeared before his eyes.

No one else reacted.

[Welcome, Skills Ruler]

His breath stopped.

SYSTEM INTERFACE

Class: Skills Ruler

Level: 1

Core Abilities:

Skill Copy (Limited)

Copy any observed skill

Usable: 3 times per copied skill

Re-copy required after usage limit

Predator Assimilation

Kill monsters or other races

Absorb: Skills, Talents, Items, Traits

Arin stared at the screen.

"…What?"

This wasn't normal.

Classes didn't work like this.

You got abilities tied to your class.

You trained.

You improved.

That was it.

But this—

This was something else entirely.

"Arin!"

Lena grabbed his arm. "What happened? Why did it say unknown?"

He hesitated.

Then said calmly, "Guess I'm just unlucky."

She stared at him. "You don't look unlucky."

He wasn't.

Because inside him—

Something had awakened.

Later That Night

Arin sat alone in his small room.

The System screen hovered before him again.

[Skill Copy: Ready]

He looked at his hand.

"Copy any skill…"

That meant—

Anything he could see.

A thought crossed his mind.

Earlier that day, he had seen the Flame Warrior boy.

The moment the class awakened—

Flames had ignited in his hand.

Arin stood up.

Closed his eyes.

And focused.

"Skill Copy."

For a moment—nothing.

Then—

A burning sensation spread through his palm.

[Skill Acquired: Flame Spark]

[Usage Remaining: 3/3]

Arin's eyes snapped open.

Fire flickered above his hand.

Small.

Unstable.

But real.

He stared at it in silence.

Then—

A slow smile formed.

"So that's how it works…"

But the System wasn't finished.

[Warning]

[Power Path Activated]

[Survival Probability: Extremely Low]

Arin chuckled softly.

"Good."

Because for the first time in his life—

He wasn't ordinary anymore.

Meanwhile… Somewhere Far Away

Deep within a ruined battlefield, something stirred.

A massive creature opened its glowing eyes.

"Skills Ruler…"

Its voice rumbled like thunder.

"So… one has appeared again."

Dark energy spread across the land.

"This world… will burn."

Back to Arin

The flame in his hand flickered out.

Usage count dropped.

[Flame Spark: 2/3]

Limited.

Temporary.

But—

Repeatable.

And that changed everything.

Arin looked out the window at the night sky.

"If I can copy…"

"And I can take from what I kill…"

His voice dropped to a whisper.

"Then I don't need talent."

A pause.

"I'll just take it."

The System screen pulsed faintly.

As if it agreed.
