Chapter 6 - The Silence After

The house was quiet again.

But this time… it wasn't just quiet.

It was tense.

Like something unseen had settled into the walls.

After bringing her back inside, no one said much.

What was there to say?

Her hand had been cold when he held it.

Too cold.

Taye sat in the living room long after everyone had gone to their rooms.

Lights off.

Phone untouched.

He couldn't shake the look in her eyes.

That emptiness.

It didn't feel temporary.

It didn't feel like something that would just pass.

It felt like something had already been taken.

Sometime deep into the night…

He finally stood up.

Slowly.

Walked toward the hallway.

Paused in front of her door.

For a moment… he just stood there.

Listening.

Nothing.

No movement.

No sound.

He knocked lightly.

"Tayo…?"

Silence.

His chest tightened slightly.

He pushed the door open.

The room was dim.

Curtains drawn.

Everything in place.

She was on the bed.

Lying on her side.

Facing the wall.

Still.

"Tayo," he called softly.

No response.

He stepped closer.

"You okay?"

Still nothing.

He hesitated…

Then sat at the edge of the bed.

"I know today was…" he started, but the words felt useless.

He exhaled quietly.

"You don't have to go through it alone."

Silence.

But this time…

Something felt off.

He leaned slightly forward.

"Tayo?"

No movement.

A cold feeling slid down his spine.

Slow.

Heavy.

He reached out.

Gently touched her shoulder.

"Tayo…"

No response.

His fingers tightened slightly.

He shook her.

Just a little.

Nothing.

His heartbeat started to rise.

Fast.

Uneven.

"Tayo… stop playing."

Still nothing.

The room suddenly felt smaller.

"Tayo!"

He turned her slightly

And froze.

Her face was peaceful.

Too peaceful.

Eyes closed.

Breathing?

He couldn't tell.

"No…"

His voice came out barely a whisper.

"No, no, no…"

He leaned closer.

Closer.

"Tayo… wake up."

Nothing.

His hands began to shake.

"Wake up!"

The words came louder now.

Desperate.

He shook her again.

Harder this time.

"Wake up!"

Still nothing.

The silence in the room…

Was unbearable.

"No…"

His chest tightened painfully.

Like something was squeezing the air out of him.

"Mum!" he shouted.

His voice cracked.

Loud.

Broken.

"Mum!"

Footsteps.

Fast.

His mother rushed in.

Then stopped.

"What?"

She saw.

And everything in her face collapsed.

"No…"

She rushed forward.

"Tayo, get up," she said quickly, touching her face.

"Get up"

Nothing.

"No, no, no…"

Her voice broke.

His father appeared at the door.

"What's going on?"

He saw.

And for a moment…

He didn't move.

Didn't speak.

Didn't breathe.

Then,

Everything fell apart.

Time blurred.

Voices.

Movement.

Calls.

Noise.

But none of it reached Taye.

He stood there.

Next to the bed.

Watching.

Not understanding.

Not accepting.

Not… anything.

Just there.

Frozen.

Someone pulled him back.

He didn't know who.

Someone was talking to him.

He didn't hear what they said.

His ears rang.

The room felt distant.

Like he wasn't in it anymore.

Like he had already left.

Then suddenly,

Silence again.

Heavy.

Final.

And in that silence…

The truth settled.

Slowly.

Painfully.

Permanently.

She was gone.

Taye sat alone in the living room later.

The same spot.

But everything felt different now.

The house didn't feel heavy anymore.

It felt empty.

Like something had been removed.

Something that could never be replaced.

His hands rested on his knees.

Still.

His mind replayed it.

Over.

And over.

Her voice.

Her face.

Her eyes.

That emptiness.

He missed it now.

Because at least… she had been there.

His phone buzzed.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

He didn't want to look.

But something made him.

He picked it up.

Unknown Number.

A message.

He stared at it.

Long.

Hard.

Then slowly…

He opened it.

"You see now?"

Taye's fingers tightened around the phone.

Another message came.

"Some things… don't need force."

His breathing slowed.

Not from calm.

From something else.

Something colder.

Another message.

"People break themselves."

Silence.

Taye stared at the screen.

And in that moment…

Something inside him shifted.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

But completely.

The grief was still there.

The pain.

The loss.

But beneath it…

Something else was forming.

Something sharper.

Colder.

Focused.

He typed slowly.

Who are you?

The reply came instantly.

"Someone who knew this would happen."

Taye's jaw tightened.

His next message came without hesitation.

Then you're involved.

A pause.

Then,

"You're starting to understand."

Silence.

Taye lowered the phone slowly.

His eyes darkened.

This wasn't over.

It was never just about the video.

It was never just about shame.

It was planned.

Controlled.

Executed.

And now…

It had taken everything from him.

He leaned back slowly.

Staring into nothing.

And for the first time since it all began…

He felt it clearly.

Not grief.

Not confusion.

Not even anger.

Something deeper.

Something final.

Purpose.
