Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 — The First Call

Part 1

The phone rang at exactly 3:07 AM.

Not vibrated.

Not a notification.

A loud, sharp ring that cut through the silence like something breaking into the room.

Aarohi's eyes snapped open.

For a moment, she didn't move.

Her heart was already racing, even before her mind fully woke up.

The darkness around her felt… heavier than usual.

Not just night.

Something else.

The phone kept ringing.

Slow.

Steady.

Almost… waiting.

Aarohi turned her head slightly.

Her phone lay on the table beside her bed, its screen glowing faintly in the dark.

She stared at it.

No one calls at this time.

No one.

Her throat felt dry as she reached out and grabbed it.

The light hit her eyes.

Unknown Number.

Her fingers froze.

Something felt wrong.

Not the call itself…

But the feeling behind it.

Like this wasn't just a mistake.

The ringing continued.

Louder now.

More demanding.

"Just pick it up…" she whispered.

"It could be important…"

But inside her chest, something tightened.

A quiet voice.

Soft.

Clear.

Don't answer.

Aarohi frowned.

Why was she scared?

It was just a phone call.

Nothing more.

She took a deep breath and pressed—

The call ended.

Just like that.

Silence.

Complete silence.

Aarohi blinked.

"What…?"

Her heart was still racing.

She stared at the screen.

No missed call notification.

Nothing.

As if it had never happened.

A cold chill ran down her spine.

"Okay… that's weird…"

She placed the phone back on the table.

Pulled the blanket closer.

Tried to calm herself.

"It's nothing…"

Her eyes slowly began to close again.

Sleep was just starting to return—

Buzz.

Her eyes snapped open.

The phone vibrated loudly against the wooden table.

Aarohi grabbed it instantly.

Another unknown number.

This time—

A message.

Her fingers trembled slightly as she opened it.

The screen lit up.

And the message appeared.

"Why didn't you answer?"

Aarohi's breath stopped.

Her heart dropped.

A strange fear crawled up her spine.

"How…?" she whispered.

There was no way.

No one could know that.

No one.

Her fingers quickly typed back:

"Who is this?"

She stared at the screen.

Waiting.

Seconds passed.

Nothing.

Then—

Typing…

Her stomach tightened.

The reply came.

"You know me."

Aarohi's grip on the phone tightened.

"No, I don't," she muttered.

She typed again:

"Stop texting me."

The reply came instantly.

"I called you."

Her breathing grew faster.

"I know…" she whispered.

Her eyes moved slowly toward the mirror on the wall.

Something felt… off.

The room suddenly felt colder.

Quieter.

Too quiet.

Her attention snapped back to the phone.

Another message.

"I'm still here."

Aarohi frowned.

"What does that even mean…?"

Before she could think further—

Her phone started ringing again.

Same number.

Same exact time.

3:07 AM.

Her heart slammed against her chest.

Her thumb hovered over the screen again.

This time…

The fear was stronger.

The voice inside her louder.

Don't answer.

The phone kept ringing.

Louder.

Sharper.

Almost… angry now.

Aarohi shut her eyes tightly.

"No…"

She let it ring.

And ring.

And ring.

Until—

It stopped.

Silence returned.

But this time…

It didn't feel empty.

It felt like something was waiting.

Watching.

Aarohi slowly opened her eyes.

And that's when she saw it.

Her reflection…

In the mirror.

Standing still.

Looking at her.

But—

She wasn't looking at the mirror.

Part 2

Aarohi's breath got stuck in her throat.

She didn't move.

She couldn't.

Her eyes were locked on the mirror.

Her reflection…

Was staring straight at her.

But that wasn't what made her heart stop.

It was the fact that—

She wasn't facing the mirror.

Slowly…

Very slowly…

Aarohi turned her head.

Her neck felt stiff, heavy, like something was stopping her from moving.

The mirror came into full view.

And now—

Her reflection matched her.

Perfectly.

Still.

Normal.

Aarohi blinked.

Once.

Twice.

Her heart was still racing.

"I… I saw that…" she whispered.

Her voice trembled.

"I know I did…"

The room remained silent.

Nothing moved.

Nothing changed.

But that feeling…

It didn't go away.

That feeling that she wasn't alone anymore.

Her phone vibrated again.

Aarohi flinched.

She looked down quickly.

Another message.

Same number.

Her fingers hesitated for a second before opening it.

"You saw me."

Aarohi's hands went cold.

"No…" she whispered.

"No, no…"

Her mind started racing.

This had to be a prank.

Someone messing with her.

But how could they know about the mirror?

How could they know what she just saw?

Her fingers shook as she typed:

"Stop this. It's not funny."

The reply came instantly.

"Look again."

Aarohi's breath hitched.

Her eyes slowly moved toward the mirror again.

Every instinct inside her screamed—

Don't.

But she couldn't stop herself.

She looked.

At first…

Nothing.

Just her reflection.

Standing there.

Still.

Normal.

Aarohi let out a shaky breath.

"See? Nothing…"

Then—

Her reflection blinked.

Aarohi froze.

She hadn't blinked.

Her eyes burned, wide open.

But in the mirror—

The reflection blinked slowly.

Deliberately.

Aarohi stumbled back.

Her heart felt like it was going to explode.

"No… no… no…"

Her reflection smiled.

A slow… unnatural smile.

Not hers.

Not human.

Aarohi covered her mouth to stop herself from screaming.

Her body trembled uncontrollably.

"This isn't real…"

The reflection tilted its head.

Exactly like a person would.

But Aarohi hadn't moved.

"I told you," a voice whispered.

Not from the phone.

Not from outside.

From inside the room.

"I'm still here."

Aarohi spun around.

"Who's there?!"

No one.

The room was empty.

But the feeling—

It was stronger now.

Closer.

Her phone buzzed again.

She almost dropped it this time.

Another message.

"Don't turn around."

Aarohi froze.

Her breath stopped completely.

She was already turned around.

Facing away from the mirror.

Slowly…

Very slowly…

Her eyes moved back toward the mirror.

And this time—

Her blood ran cold.

Her reflection…

Was gone.

The mirror showed her room.

Her bed.

Her table.

Everything—

Except her.

Aarohi's legs felt weak.

"I… I'm right here…" she whispered.

Her voice broke.

She took a step closer.

Then another.

Her heart pounded louder with each step.

"I'm right here…"

The mirror stayed empty.

Like she didn't exist.

Tears filled her eyes.

Her breathing became uneven.

"What's happening to me…?"

The phone rang again.

Loud.

Sharp.

Right next to her ear.

Aarohi screamed and dropped it on the bed.

The screen lit up.

Same number.

Same call.

This time…

She didn't hesitate.

Her fear turned into anger.

"Whoever you are, stop this!"

She grabbed the phone.

Her hand shaking.

And pressed—

Answer.

The room went silent instantly.

No sound came from the phone.

Just… static.

Soft.

Creepy.

Like distant breathing.

Aarohi pressed the phone to her ear.

"Hello?"

No response.

Just static.

Then—

A whisper.

So faint…

She almost didn't hear it.

"Look… behind you…"

Aarohi's eyes widened in terror.

Her entire body froze.

Her breath stopped.

The phone slipped slightly in her hand.

And slowly…

Against every instinct—

She turned around.

Part 3

Aarohi turned around slowly.

Her heartbeat thundered in her ears.

The room behind her…

Looked normal.

Too normal.

Her bed.

Her table.

The window slightly open.

Nothing out of place.

Nothing wrong.

Aarohi blinked rapidly.

"There's nothing…" she whispered.

Her voice shook.

On the phone—

Silence.

Then…

A soft chuckle.

Cold.

Unfamiliar.

"You're looking… at the wrong place."

Aarohi's grip tightened around the phone.

Her throat went dry.

"W-what do you mean…?"

No answer.

Just silence again.

Then—

The line went dead.

The call ended.

Aarohi slowly lowered the phone.

Her hands were trembling.

Her mind was racing.

Wrong place?

What does that mean?

Her eyes slowly moved around the room again.

Walls.

Door.

Window.

Everything looked the same.

But that feeling—

It hadn't left.

It was still there.

Watching her.

Closer now.

Then suddenly—

Her phone buzzed again.

Aarohi flinched violently.

She looked down.

Another message.

Same number.

Her fingers hesitated…

But she opened it.

"Not there."

Aarohi swallowed hard.

Her breathing became shallow.

"Then… where?" she whispered.

Her eyes slowly lifted.

And stopped.

On the mirror.

A cold wave of fear rushed through her body.

"No…"

She didn't want to look.

She really didn't.

But something inside her—

Forced her to.

Slowly…

She turned her head.

Her eyes met the mirror.

And this time—

She saw herself.

Standing there.

Still.

Silent.

But something was wrong.

Very wrong.

Her reflection…

Was holding a phone to its ear.

Aarohi's breath stopped.

Her hands dropped to her sides.

She wasn't holding the phone anymore.

It had slipped onto the bed.

But in the mirror—

She still was.

"No…"

The reflection smiled slowly.

And spoke.

Not through the mirror.

Through the phone lying on the bed.

Aarohi's head snapped toward it.

The speaker turned on by itself.

And her own voice filled the room.

Clear.

Cold.

Wrong.

"I told you… I'm still here."

Aarohi stumbled backward.

Her legs hit the edge of the bed.

She nearly fell.

Her entire body shook with fear.

"This isn't possible…"

The reflection in the mirror stepped forward.

Closer to the glass.

Watching her.

Smiling.

"You shouldn't have answered."

The voice echoed again from the phone.

Aarohi shook her head rapidly.

"No… no… stop…"

Her reflection raised its hand.

And placed it against the mirror.

The glass rippled.

Like water.

Aarohi's eyes widened in horror.

"No… stay away…"

But it didn't stop.

The reflection leaned closer.

Its face inches from the surface.

"You invited me."

A crack appeared on the mirror.

Thin.

Spreading slowly.

Aarohi screamed.

"No! I didn't!"

The crack spread wider.

The room temperature dropped instantly.

Her breath turned into mist.

The lights flickered violently.

"You answered the call…"

Another crack.

"And now…"

The mirror began to shake.

The sound of glass cracking filled the room.

"…I can come out."

Aarohi grabbed the nearest thing—

A book from the table—

And threw it at the mirror.

CRASH!

The glass shattered loudly.

Pieces fell to the floor.

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Still.

Aarohi stood there.

Breathing hard.

Her chest rising and falling rapidly.

She stared at the broken mirror.

Nothing.

No reflection.

No movement.

No voice.

Her knees felt weak.

"It's… over?"

She whispered.

No answer.

The room slowly returned to normal.

The cold faded.

The lights stopped flickering.

Everything felt… calm.

Too calm.

Aarohi let out a shaky breath.

Her body slowly relaxed.

She stepped closer to the broken mirror.

Carefully.

Cautiously.

The pieces of glass lay scattered on the floor.

Each piece reflecting small fragments of her face.

Normal.

Still.

Nothing strange.

She let out a small, nervous laugh.

"I'm just imagining things…"

Then—

One of the glass pieces moved.

Aarohi froze.

Her heart stopped again.

The piece slowly turned…

And in it—

Her reflection smiled.

Not her.

The other one.

Aarohi's breath caught.

Before she could react—

Her phone rang again.

Loud.

Sharp.

Terrifying.

She looked at it slowly.

Screen glowing.

Same number.

Same call.

And this time—

The name appeared.

"ME"

Aarohi's hands started shaking uncontrollably.

Her eyes filled with terror.

The phone kept ringing.

Louder.

Closer.

Like it was calling from inside her head.

The broken mirror pieces began vibrating.

One by one—

They started sliding across the floor.

Toward her.

Slowly.

Silently.

Aarohi stepped back.

"No… no…"

The phone kept ringing.

The glass pieces surrounded her feet.

And in every single piece—

Her reflection was smiling.

Watching her.

Waiting.

The call was still ringing.

And this time…

She knew—

If she answered again…

Something would happen.

Something worse.

Something final.

The phone screen glowed brighter.

The name still there.

ME

The ringing didn't stop.

Didn't slow.

Didn't fade.

It just kept going.

Waiting.

For her.

To answer.
