Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

Chapter 1: The Map That Shouldn't Exist

The rain hadn't stopped for three days.

It fell in steady sheets over the small town, turning roads into rivers and skies into a dull, endless gray. Inside a dusty old attic, Aarav wiped sweat from his forehead, even though the air was cool.

"Why did I agree to clean this place?" he muttered.

His grandmother's house had always been a mystery—locked rooms, creaky floors, and stories she never fully explained. Now that she was gone, the responsibility had fallen on him.

And the attic was the worst.

Old trunks, broken clocks, stacks of yellowed books… and something else.

Aarav froze.

In the far corner, beneath a torn blanket, a wooden chest sat half-buried in dust. It didn't look like the others. It was darker, polished, and carved with strange symbols that seemed almost… alive.

He walked toward it slowly.

"Okay… that's new."

He knelt down and brushed off the dust. The symbols were unfamiliar, but they gave him a strange feeling—like they were watching him.

The chest wasn't locked.

That was the first mistake.

The second was opening it.

Inside, there was only one thing.

A map.

Not an ordinary map. The paper shimmered faintly, like it had been drawn with liquid silver. Lines shifted slightly when he tilted it, as if the land itself was moving.

"Whoa…"

Aarav picked it up carefully.

The moment his fingers touched it, the attic lights flickered.

Then—

Thunder crashed.

And the map… changed.

New markings appeared. A path. A destination.

And a symbol at the center—a circle with a sharp line cutting through it.

Aarav's heart started racing.

"This… wasn't here before."

Suddenly, footsteps echoed from below.

He froze.

"Aarav?" his mother called. "Did you find anything useful up there?"

He quickly folded the map and slipped it into his hoodie.

"Uh—just old stuff!" he shouted back.

Silence.

Then—

"Come down. Power might go out again."

"Coming!"

But he didn't move.

Instead, he looked back at the chest.

It was empty now.

Too empty.

Like it had never held anything at all.

A cold breeze swept through the attic, even though the windows were shut.

And then he heard it.

A whisper.

Not loud. Not clear.

But unmistakable.

"Find it…"

Aarav spun around.

"Who's there?!"

Nothing.

Just rain.

Just darkness.

Just the sound of his own breathing getting faster.

He swallowed hard.

"This is… not normal."

But deep inside, something else stirred.

Excitement.

Curiosity.

Danger.

The map in his hoodie felt warm now.

Alive.

And somehow…

Calling him.

That night, Aarav couldn't sleep.

The storm had only gotten worse, thunder shaking the windows. But that wasn't what kept him awake.

It was the map.

He pulled it out again under his blanket and stared at it.

The path had changed.

Now it was clearer.

And it didn't lead somewhere far away.

It led somewhere close.

Very close.

Right outside his town.

"To the forest?" he whispered.

No one went there.

Not after sunset.

Not after the stories.

But the map didn't care about stories.

It pulsed faintly, as if urging him forward.

"Tomorrow," Aarav said quietly.

"I'll just check it out. That's all."

But even as he said it, he knew the truth.

This wasn't just curiosity anymore.

This was the beginning of something he couldn't stop.

And somewhere far beyond the storm…

Something was waiting for him to begin.

If you want, I can continue with Chapter 2 (where he enters the forest and something follows him 👀).
