Chapter 3 - Rivalries in the Courtyard

The next morning, Xavier woke to the sound of bells ringing across Veloria. The Silver estate stirred with activity: servants rushing through halls, siblings preparing for lessons, and the faint hum of magic in the air. Xavier groaned, pulling the pillow over his head. He had barely survived yesterday's spoon storm and bubble‑boar fiasco. Surely today would be kinder.

He was wrong.

"Up!" Lord Darius's voice thundered from the doorway. "Your training continues. Today, you will join the other apprentices."

Xavier peeked out from under the pillow. "Other apprentices? As in, people who actually know what they're doing?"

"Precisely," his father said. "You will learn discipline among your peers."

Xavier muttered, "Or humiliation. Probably humiliation."

The Courtyard Gathering

The training courtyard was alive with energy. Young magicians stood in neat rows, their robes crisp, their staves gleaming. They whispered spells under their breath, conjuring sparks and illusions with practiced ease. Xavier shuffled in at the back, clutching nothing but nerves.

Master Orlin appeared, robes flapping like banners. "Students! Today, you will duel. Not to harm, but to learn. Magic is best understood in conflict."

Xavier raised a hand. "Can't we start with, I don't know, meditation? Or knitting?"

Orlin grinned. "Knitting is for sweaters. Conflict is for growth."

Enter the Rival

From the front row stepped a boy with sharp features and a smirk that could curdle milk. His robes were immaculate, his staff carved with runes. He bowed mockingly. "Xavier Silver. I've heard of you. The prodigy who summons spoons."

Xavier groaned. "Fantastic. My reputation precedes me."

"I am Kael Draven," the boy announced proudly. "Top of the apprentice class. Today, I will show you what true magic looks like."

Xavier muttered, "And I'll show you what breakfast looks like."

The Duel Begins

The students formed a circle. Orlin raised his hands. "Begin!"

Kael's staff glowed, and a wave of fire surged forward. Xavier panicked, raising his hands. Energy burst forth, and… a giant loaf of bread appeared, landing with a thud between them. The fire hit the bread, sizzling harmlessly.

The courtyard erupted in laughter. Xavier stared at the loaf. "Well. At least no one's hungry."

Kael sneered. "Pathetic."

He conjured lightning, crackling and fierce. Xavier flinched, releasing another spell. A swarm of butterflies filled the air, dazzling the crowd. The lightning fizzled as the butterflies absorbed the energy, glowing briefly before fluttering away.

Orlin clapped. "Marvelous! You have transformed destruction into beauty!"

Xavier blinked. "I did? I mean… yes. Totally intentional."

Escalation

Kael's face twisted with frustration. "You mock me with tricks. Face real power!" He slammed his staff down, summoning a stone golem that rose from the ground, towering over Xavier.

Xavier's heart raced. He raised his hands, desperate. Magic surged, and a spell burst forth. The golem froze, then slowly began to dance. Its massive stone arms waved awkwardly, its feet stomped in rhythm. The courtyard roared with laughter.

Kael's jaw dropped. "What—what is this?"

Xavier grinned nervously. "I call it… interpretive rock."

Orlin was beside himself with joy. "Brilliant! You have turned a weapon into art!"

Aftermath

The duel ended with Kael storming off, humiliated. The other apprentices crowded around Xavier, half mocking, half impressed.

"Can you teach me the bread shield?" one asked, laughing.

"Do the dancing golem again!" another shouted.

Xavier rubbed his temples. "I wasn't trying to be funny. It just… happens."

Orlin patted his shoulder. "Chaos is your ally. Embrace it."

Xavier sighed. "Chaos is going to get me killed."

Dinner Tension

That evening, the Silver family gathered for dinner. Alaric leaned across the table, smirking. "So, little brother, I hear you defeated Kael Draven with… bread."

Xavier stabbed at his roast. "It was tactical bread."

Lysander snorted. "And butterflies. Don't forget the butterflies."

Their mother frowned. "Xavier, you must take this seriously. The Draven family is influential. Humiliating their son could have consequences."

Xavier threw up his hands. "What was I supposed to do? His fireball was bigger than my confidence!"

Lord Darius's eyes narrowed. "You are a Silver. You will learn control, or you will disgrace us."

Xavier muttered, "Too late. I'm already the family embarrassment."

Kael's Perspective

Across Veloria, Kael Draven sat fuming in his family's estate. His pride had been shattered, his reputation bruised. "Bread and butterflies," he spat. "He made me a laughingstock."

His father, stern and calculating, placed a hand on his shoulder. "Then prove yourself. Show the world that Xavier Silver is no prodigy, only a fool. Challenge him again, and this time, crush him."

Kael's eyes gleamed with determination. "I will. He won't humiliate me twice."

Orlin's Wisdom

Later that night, Orlin visited Xavier in his room. He leaned on the umbrella Xavier had conjured the day before, twirling it like a cane. "You unsettled Kael today. He expected fire and fury. Instead, you gave him bread and butterflies. He cannot prepare for what he cannot imagine."

Xavier groaned. "He also can't forgive me for making him look ridiculous."

Orlin chuckled. "Good. Let him stew. Chaos is not weakness, Xavier. It is unpredictability. And unpredictability is power."

Xavier stared at the umbrella. "Power that makes me look like a clown."

"Clowns survive," Orlin said with a wink. "Never underestimate laughter. It disarms more than swords."

Reflection

That night, Xavier sat by his window, staring at the city lights of Veloria. He thought about Kael's fury, the laughter of the apprentices, and the absurdity of his magic. He wasn't sure if he was a joke or a miracle. Maybe both.

He whispered to himself, "I wanted to be the author. Instead, I'm the punchline. But maybe… maybe the punchline matters."

The umbrella leaned against the wall, shimmering faintly. Xavier smiled. "Alright, chaos. Tomorrow, let's try not to humiliate me too badly."

Outside, the city hummed with magic, and somewhere in the shadows, Kael Draven plotted his revenge.
